That is a weird route. If it had taken off from RWY 16, then I would suggest a left bank turn, rather than a right turn, when you're flying to Europe.
the a340-300 has a lower (but only slightly lower) T/W ratio than most other modern airliners and the a340-500 has a higher T/W than most modern airliners, so not all a340's are "under powered" but i suspect that the a343 is slightly more fuel efficient than the a345. Unfortunatly for the a340-200 and -300 series aircraft the a330-200 and -300 both have more power are lighter and are more fuel efficient (but have less range and are restricted by etops).
@dublinairportplanes A340 isnt underpowered... it wouldnt have been certified for commersial traffic then due to the safety of the passengers and crew... It has the same Takeoff roll as the 777's and DC-10-30/40 Il-96M at MTOW,and shorter than MD-11,747,and its big brothers... the long takeoff roll is due to high takeoff weight,low flap setting and low flex temp that saves the company fuel...

Thats not actually completely true. The weight of the aircraft plays a huge part of it. Proportionally speaking, the engines are underpowered however flying out of YYC is approx. 78% of the max T/O weight of an A340. So it can be done, however again, the engine power isn`t the greatest. Beautiful aircraft nonetheless..
