That’s the beauty of Kali, I always tell partners/. Students…”Many Weapons, One Mind”. But to answer the question, I am not a fan of prison, so I have to go with sticks for real combat. Still love the Bolo though.

You can also choose a whip.. such as stinger tactical whip or a filipino traditional whip, the dried tail of mantaray ... It can deliver so much pain.. but not fatal..

For me the counter strikes with single stick are like a sequel to the reverse angle techniques taught in a clip recently.
Those felt like tight-spot escape moves, but these counters I much enjoy to learn because they are an even more powerful best defence - offence response.

When my sensei suggested that i look into arnis, i didn't like it at first because from what i've seen. It always looked like sport fencing. But after discovering your channel, I realized that he was referring to the old traditional style.
    Thanks paul, mabuhay.😁😁

I engage in FMA for self-defense purposes, and for that reason, I believe Kali sticks are the right weapons to train with. By the way, I just practiced similar blocks and strikes a while ago.

From my experience, you should always start with the stick. Once you mastered correct position of the stick in your hand and have a good feeling and coordination then you should go with Bolo. At that point you will know where the blade edge is and you can work on your routine. Bolo has different weight distribution, so you might need to get accustomed to it on the first few movements, but then you will be on the right path

I’m training with the stick, don’t have a bolo, but have some knives, want to transition to the blade. Hope I don’t have to fight, but will use what’s available.

Bolos and edged weapons cuts and do severe damage. But sticks, especially the single stick is more versatile: can strike but can be used to strangle or as a leverage for takedowns, throws, pins, etc: in a non feudal society stick’s are better. But even better to train both

Well... Bolo is great for training, simply because it trains the use of the edge. Otherwise, the movements and tactics are the same as stick, or for the most part, empty hands as well.

Thinking about it further,I think bolo training strengthens your stick work.

What would you consider the difference in the use of the outside umbrella vs. the outside wing?

Both actually. In a realistic encounter, you have to be proficient with both weapons.
