I heard a tiny one sentence that I helped with in this. The part where it says Sandy Barr had televised matches weekly till he died. I was the producer who contacted him and put him on the air with a show on public access each week starting Jan 05
I miss when every state and region of the United States had a hero to call their own, now its national brands that feel diluted to hell. Its a shame what happened to the territory system.
I lived in Oregon when I was like 6. I remember PNWW. Art Barr was Bettlejuice and I was such a fan!!! The nostalgia of that time I will cherish forever! Thanks PNWW for a great childhood show to watch & attend!!! I really miss the golden days of our country
So much potential cut down by rape allegations and untimely death five years later. He was having a successful career in Mexico at the time. Would he have made it as big as his partner Eddie (Guerrero) if he lived?
My friends and I would watch Portland wrestling especially during sleepovers on Saturday nights in the late 60's and early 70's. During interviews these wrestlers would scream and yell while the spittle flew and old frank bonama would just calmly stand there and take it. He was the best.
I am married to Frank Bonnema's daughter. When she was a kid she would be running around the wrestling facilities while her dad was doing the Saturday night show. Man, the stories she has told me about those days are entertaining as hell. Good times.
Thumbs up for your very entertaining and informative offerings. As a life long fan (born 1960) of wrestling it's refreshing to relive memories of the past. Keep up the great work! -Larry
I remember as a kid in the 80's reading the wrestling magazines about Portland. I always think of Billy Jack Haynes. His face was plastered all over. I used to always wish I could see this show.
It s was so good at the times, every promotion had his heros. tickets were cheap ,drama and action, so credible. Now its all marketing and Hollywood scripters, no emotions and lack of credibility
Tony Bourne, Cowboy Frankie Lane, Playboy Buddy Rose, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes, Lonnie Mane, Dutch Savage, just some of my favorites. Shah Thomas was my all time favorite referee. Loved his headbutt on bad guys.
His bar was a couple blocks from my Grandmother's place. It's a Habitat for Humanity now. I think. But as a kid, i remember always seeing him sitting out front of the bar, whenever going to my Grans. Like he hadn't left, that chair since the last time i saw him.
My buddies and I went to the 2000's incarnation of Portland Wrestling when I went up to visit in 2004. As far as indies go, it wasn't bad. Bryan Alvarez was the only guy of note to the best of my memory, but it wasn't bad.
Damn. Should've called it "Bulldog Wrestling". They bit hard and held on through a lot of shit from outside forces. Great promotion, great territory, great legacy.

I knew that Portland,or PNW,was the longest running original nwa territory,& Memphis is always credited to be last to close doors, but in all honestly if u consider when Sandy Barr restarted & how short of a time they were closed ,& that they really have never stayed closed down thru champ. USA,to new Portland wrestling on Comcast around 03 or 04 to uncut to now west coast wrestling connection wrestling has stayed open in Portland.I didn't know it had a program going back so far to tv just beginning or about how long the tv show ran being behind only 2 nationally syndicated news shows like meet the press and CBS evening news, that to me is very very impressive.Anyway, thanks a lot we just do not get the attention or credit up here that they deserve thanks a bunch!
This video conflates the Kafoury-era from 2000/2001 with the Culbertson-era a few years later. Kafoury brought PW back to life after Sandy Barr shut down. Both had WB 32 timeslots but it they had different TV production crews, promoters, and bookers. I helped produce the show in 2000.
One of the names mentioned, Ed Francis, would promote wrestling in Hawaii in the 1960's to the mid 70s. He brought quite a few wrestlers who were regulars in Portland and San Francisco.
It was Portland Wrestling followed by the T.V Show Sinister Cinema. The way Jesse Ventura would say, "Frank Bonnema!" would make the whole frkn show. Miss that.

Roy Shire's territory might have been the greatest of the late 60s to mid 70s territories. Do you have a film about Roy? I have some stories of Mr. Shire as he would sell me 50 tickets (to scalp) to any of his events, but mainly the original 18 man Battle Royal at the Cow Palace.
Buddy Rose looks like Louie Anderson in that red shirt. Great video. I grew up in Chicago where AWA (Minneapolis) was promoted heavily. Then in '84 (post Rocky III Hogan) WWF. Upon WWFs explosion local channels started airing NWA (mostly WCW and Mid-South guys) and WCCW (Dallas). I didn't realize until recently that NWA was sort of a governing body. I always thought they were just another promotion. Never knew about any other territories like PNW.
I could remember the crowd would chant "Whale on the beach" whenever Buddy wrestled. Even when he beefed he was still pretty agile and was probably the biggest draw Portland Wrestling ever had
I used to stay up late on Saturday and watch Portland Wrestling!! I remember seeing so many future stars come through before they were big. Piper, Dynamite Kid, Snuka, Billy Jack Haynes... I remember going to the Portland Sports Arena when I was maybe 7 years old and seeing the life sized Andre the Giant painting on the wall inside the main entrance. Scared the shit out of me but I was also fascinated by it. Being only 7 years old I remember being confused on how the good guys and the bad guys would walk to the ring from the SAME dressing room, Hmm... Received an autograph from Iceman King Parsons there as well!!
Iceman is one of the most underrated wrestlers of all time. I grew up watching him in St.Louis. I lived in Portland for several years but I wish I would have been there for the glory days of Portland wrestling.

@@dandegroodt2144 Awesome!
Roddy Piper was my absolute favorite wrestler, he always had a snappy come back for everything, lol! R.I.P.
Rick Martel and Roddy Piper formed a great tag team here and had a legendary feud with the New Zealand Sheepherders (Bushwhackers).

I wached all through 80's till end every weekend we watched tv or were at event ALOT of stars wrestled here. RIP PORTLAND WRESTLING
It was a very popular territory. The pay was good and the road trips were short.
