    Java Ferns are a great plant! In my experience they like potassium to be on the higher side, and they grow better if the current is running parallel with the rhizome instead of against it.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 года назад +5

      Great observations! I've never noticed the current part- ill have to pay more attention to that... as I looked in my tanks, the rhizome seems to grow along the path it likes...and it lines up with the current in 3 of my tanks...so whoa! Great piece of info you managed to observe, my friend!

    Oh Alex I'm glad you did this video! Java fern is my number one favorite plant of all. That is after two failed attempts of planting it in substrate (and this was before RUclips😂😭😂). so this time when I decided to try my hand again, I looked up java fern because I had planted it in the substrate again. I thought it was alive until I went to do a water change, I noticed the leaves fell off and I thought "here we go again I cannot grow this stuff" so I started searching for videos and I found out about the little spots on the leaves that were actually the spores. So I took all the leaves that fell off and threw them into some water and left them there, sure enough they started sprouting. I had also learned that it did better if you attached it to rocks or wood. So I took the Little sprouts that had grown off The Leaf and I glued them to little sticks, rocks, and onto Driftwood. I had no idea what a long process it would be but it's so worth it. It started growing and I was amazed. I appreciate you taking the time to talk about this great plant and explain the secret history of it living in our aquariums. So many people give up on this plant and I'm so glad I didn't. I enjoyed the talk about the different types and how it can be grown immersed or submersed! And what we are seeing when we see these black spots on it! I did not know about the gall and the cancer. That was really interesting to learn. Now I have more knowledge so I will be able to address more issues now in the future with growing it. I hope you're feeling better and staying safe. Always wonderful education here with you I enjoyed the video! I hope you're having a very blessed weekend! 🙏🌿🐟🌱✌️

      First of all, welcome 🙏 thanks for joining the community here in the nerdy fish corner haha. . So what is occurring, Is "melt" the ferns were either once under water only partway ( this is how they are nearly all grown) and it took a few months to realize " yikes I'm under water, I need to make babies but don't have time for spores clusters ( uniform black or brown dots on the underside of the largest leafs.) like terrestrial ferns and they evolved to focus their energy into the toughest plant start possible! Meaning those little starts of plants will all become full grown ferns if you cut off the dead tissues carefully and just let the babies float.
      Mom plant should survive. But may lose most her adult leaves for a while first

    Hi! Great content but I totally disagree with what you saying that the main nutrients this plant needs are "nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and manganese". In my many years having Java Ferns in many different tanks, I can tell you that the game changer for me was when I start adding potassium (and a little bit of iron) and nothing else. I even read a long time ago an article in my local fish store referring Java Ferns as "Potassium hogs".

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 месяца назад +1

      Oh I agree with you that they only need those 2 things in a well balanced tank. But if they have pin holes specifically or are turning yellow, that's when the other nutrients are important.
      Potassium Is probably the most under utilized fert there is in my experience. It's usually the first to be depleted , or nitrates in stem plants and crypts. Followed by or tied with iron as you say

    Wonderful info. I was worried about those black/brown dots. Now I'm not. I don't know how mine does it, but it gets baseball sized clumps and a few football sized plants in just a few months. I rarely do water changes but I do use Flourish and the others you spoke of. My lights are an el-cheapo light with full spectrum. These grow in my ten gallon like wildfire. I have a twenty long with no soil just filled with them, and it is creating soil and the roots are digging in. I use a grow light on it in 4 hour a day cycles. And now it occurs to me that perhaps I'm using too much light. Using a Hygger and threw another plant light (tube style) that I had lying around. Maybe I just need to learn patience. 😅
    Edit: animal behavior is a funny thing. Turned off the extra light, just leaving the hygger running, and now my new-ish Otos are much less jumpy/anxious and seem to be feeding and swimming much more openly. I realize in retrospect that I planned my plants around an idea that light would be even throughout the tank and now I'm realizing I may have to move some things around. There's always more to do.

    Had this issue with Java ferns, I had 0 phosphates and I had stop dosing co2 since this supposed to be a low tech plant, sadly they still need co2 it seems like, so i ended up cutting all leaves and now I hope the new growth its healthy, added some PO4 and restarted doing co2, after all is not a low tech plant

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад

      Are you using tap water with a very low TDS? or very high TDS? Also, carbon (Co2) turns to carbonic acid in our water, which drops the ph, so perhaps you need to buffer the water more, because they are "low tech" for most folks...however there are exceptions for sure. Everyone has different water parameters and they all make a big difference.... also you can "drown" the rhizome if it's buried, and light can burn a plant if light is on the high end of the spectrum.
      But it sound like you've sorted out most the issues, so nice detective work! I hope it continues to improve

    I have a new small Java fern. A few leaves are brown and holes in it. I'm not sure if it's the immersed leaves. New leaves are growing any tips?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад +1

      Well I leave mine for a month or so if I don't know. If they are still viable, they will grow little root looking threads on the end of the leaf. As soon as 2 leaves and the tiny roots sprout from a leaf, you can then cut that node off the top of any pointed Java leaf and grow those by floating then or just fastening them to a stick/rock (this is called vegetative growth).
      Then they also send out more root style material, which is known as "rhizome". This will also grow more plants and I usually cut any leaf that has more than about 40% of the surface area chewed, broken or off color. Trim it with a sharp knife or scissors, right at the base of of individual stem, and the plant should grow another leaf soon after (a month or so)
      Best of luck! Oh and PS... POTASSIUM or small amounts of phosphates are usually what Java ferns suffer deficiencies with.
