    Rimrock lake (imho) is one of the more fascinating geological spots in Washington.
    A tiny scrap of comparatively old crust in the middle of the Cascades that has more in common with the San Juan islands than the volcanoes around it; WA-state has so much in common with Oregon until you get to White Pass and then everything gets weird and I'm here for it.

    After 3 attempts I'm starting to think you guys just like going to rimrock lake, like some sort of nature loving weirdos who are in it for the fresh air, gorgeous scenery and exercise. What next, bringing fishing poles and baskets full of food while you watch the sun set behind the trees on a fall evening with a nice picnic?

    I don't know if I could've resisted that big one lol. I feel your pain on the decayed calcite. I just found a similar (non thunder egg) nodule.

    You could totally make that swim to the island! 😂

    Oh wow, we just got back from Little Naches a week ago and thought about going to Rim Rock but I told my dad it was garbage, so it wasn't good.

      There is a lot of garbage rocks at rimrock but when you find a few good ones it feels worth it.

    Lots of fun! I hear your dogs name as different things. Is it mica. Lyca. Or something else. It's not your pronunciation its old ears.😊
    Keep having fun!

    At least you're not digging for hours only to find one or two eggs that are low to medium quality. That matrix does not look like it will polish very well either. Similar to some of the Buchanan egg beds. It looked like a nice day out there though.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  Год назад

      I would say the matrix here takes a semi-gloss finish which is acceptable for me.
      It is a low effort location but that also means that it has low pay off.

    How many thundereggs would it take to make a kitchen backsplash? That could be a cool rockhound maker's challenge video.

    How far were you from the first site on the lake?

    Pardon my ignorance, but why do thundereggs exhibit that star pattern? It seems that is common no matter where you collect them.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  Год назад

      So that's actually a rather complex question. There are some that do not show the star pattern but a lot do for sure and it and a basic answer is that the gas bubbles in the rhyolite flows where filled during a presser event cracking open the bubble.
      It does get more complex than that. There is a great book on the subject but its hard to find. The Formation of Thundereggs (Lithophysae) by Robert Colburn.
