- In Puerto Rico, a lechonera is a temple of pork. The prep starts early. 6-7 hours before the first patron, secret seasonings are rubbed, pigs are put on spits, embers are tended to. I drove to my lechonera through some winding mountain roads, getting hopelessly lost on the way with no GPS. Every person knew how to get there except me of course. I rolled in, the thick smoke of sofrito tinted air, morcilla coming off the grill and thunderous bangs of machete slicing through cracking skin and hitting the chopping block. It was a full-blown carnival of lechón asado. I sat, I ate and it was perfect.
When people from another country tell me what they miss from home, they usually say something like “it’s just not the same”. I’ve heard that about lechón, and now I get it.

The mountains has the best fresh cooked food you can ever find. I'm not a fan of San Juan because it's too metro, tourists and the food is not so fresh and organic like the mountain food. The people are also humble in the mountains. It's is safe to just explore the entire island you can enjoy it more than anything in this world. I love my island and can't wait to go and explore it again.

Anthony Bourdain came up to my town of Cayey to the famous Guavate pork town and had the pleaseure to our best pork at El Mojito and said it was the best pork he has ever had , better than the vietnamese , and after that for a good surf at Jobos 4-6 feet clean the next day.
The roast pork in PR is the best I’ve ever tasted, truly special.

@@unculturedtravel I live in Florida now, but as a kid, my dad used to drive thru the road calles "La Piquiña" and this is where you could find the best Lechoneras. This road goes thru Cayey. Hey, check your cholesterol!
@@arielmorales1410 Yum, sometimes you have to risk the cholesterol for the flavor! The morcilla is also so so good! It might actually be my favorite Lechoneria dish. Any dishes you recommend when going for Lechon?

Hola and Good stay in P.R. Yes! The vids you showed food 🥘 is delicious. But I noticed you haven’t tried the Bacalaitos. Battered Fried cod fish .. it depends on the maker.. some peeps fill that bad boy with cod and others just smear it with flour tasting cod. 😘 I watched your vids and am impressed by your outlook of this lovely 🏝 island. Just wondering if you are still here in P.R.? While you were on the East side of P.R. You didn’t go south East enough to hit Naguabo , Humacao or Yabucoa 😎restaurants and food trucks. There are some good places to eat all over the island 👍and the beaches 😘 there are hidden gems out here✨waterfalls, cliffs to jump into deep rivers on the other side of the El Yunque mountains ⛰ Have fun and enjoy
I’ve been meaning to try Bacalaitos! I love salt cod! I am back in New York now but will return. I will check out the other side of the El Yunque mountains, I found the small towns inland to be so special as well but want to see more coast! P.R. is such a special place with strong culture. I need to find some Lechon in the Bronx in the meantime! Naguabo and the other places you mentioned look awesome when I googled them. Thank you for these tips! I really, really like how you did not go to the tourist places. And wow, carros públicos (public cabs) seem to not be working anymore. That's tragic. Wow, you went to the lechoneras up there in the mountains. That's awesome! I like how your eyes lit up when you ate the pork and blood sausage. LMAO. I'm the same. Right there in Luquillo is where I would go hang out with my friends. Loved this episode.

Amazing video! I wish you could go up the carretera 149 that starts in the North of the island and goes all the way to the South. It has some great food places and some amazing "chinchorros."

@@unculturedtravel When I lived in Puerto Rico, it was a little bar called "El Besuvio" in Toa Baja, which was right next to an "Agencia Hipica," which is where you bet on horses. The place is no longer there, but if we are talking about classic countryside chinchorros I would have to say all the chinchorros in the 149th, especially the ones in Ciales and Jayuya where I still have family. Seeing your videos make you feel like you are there. Great job, man, and hopefully, we can get some beers at a chinchorro!

@@unculturedtravel Funny, my fave food in PR is 'PR Chinese food', sadly fried rice in PR has gone down hill for the last 10yrs or so. Very few good places left.
For local food places, Metropol has an amazing congri rice with garlic shrimp or ropa vieja... for around $20.

@@unculturedtravel My go to 'Combinaciones' are Boneless Pork Ribs, Pepper steak, pollo pepper and pollo al ajillo(Garlic).
Ribs are amazing if you find a place that wont serve you 30-40% pieces of fat instead of actual meat, that shits been going on for years now and I have stopped ordering bbq boneless pork.
The hard part is finding a decent PR chinese rest now a days. Lucky blossom, Confianza china, China Taste(once gave me crappy fried rice, it was late and i've had many decent fried rice from them and gave them a pass)are decent. I've heard China Sun in Santurce is pretty good.
Egg rolls are good IF homemade, u have to ask... or they'll sell you Costco egg rolls. Homemade have a red shredded pork meat with cabbage, pretty yummy.
I always ask for my 'combinacion' without fries... so they add more fried rice instead of the fries. I never liked fries with fried rice. Some love the pepper steak sauce to soak the fries. To each their own.
Its getting pricey, most combinaciones were $7+, now $10+
Oh, Tayzan in Condado has a very nice tasting 'house combination fried rice', they add pieces of steak, chicken and quarter sized shrimp. Used to be like $12, cant imagine now, easily $15+.

I love your tip "I always ask for my 'combinacion' without fries... so they add more fried rice instead of the fries.". I'm now more intrigued then ever by Chinese / P.R. cooking! When fried rice is done well, it's very hard to beat. Done over high heat with plenty of hot sauce yum. Any other P.R. dishes you recommend? I love soups too!

@@unculturedtravel sadly no. I've been to La Ruta de Lechón in Cayey many times though. I'm dying to try this place next time I go see my family down there!

@@unculturedtravel it's more widespread in the US than it used to be. You once needed to be in Florida or in New York to find it, and now you find authentic restaurants in a lot more states. I was a child when mainstream supermarkets didn't even carry plantains, and now most stores seem to have them, at least on the East Coast.
