  • It was 1980 and I was 16 and saw the most incredible performance of big band jazz of my life! I saw Duffy Jackson play with the Basie Band! Here is the story and how it later reappeared.
Correction: Color of the drums. Duffy was using Tama and he appears in the 1980 catalog. He must have used a Tama Imperial Star kit in "metallic white" or possibly "royal pewter" as the Super Star kits did not offer that color. However, It is possible that his kit he was using was from prior to the 1980 offerings. Those offerings would have been a few more. Super Stars did have a finish called "Platina" in1978. All geek drummer stuff, but interesting.

Hi Jim, I’m Duffy’s little sister and I just listened to your story and I laughed and felt sorrow in the same breath. The gallon jug and jelly donut was so Duffy. Lol. Thank you for sharing your reverence to Duffys career. I miss him so much. Your story was a blessing to read.

God bless you Jaijai! I will never forget him. He hit me right at the right time (16 years old) to be a major influence on me. I loved the Basie band and with him at the helm. Just too great! Would have loved to have known him personally.

I met Duffy when he was 13 and I 16. He was living in a store front with Chubby in Hallandale. He played the Buddy records for me note for note!! What a great dummer he was at 13!

Thank you for bringing this topic up brother ! I recently discovered on RUclips Duffy as a band leader in a small group swinging his butt off at a live outdoor gig I think in Florida? And he takes a solo of scatting like a true be-bop horn player with tons of syncopation in his voice while he's driving the band hard on the drum kit with elegance and grace. He was like Mount Fuji, unmovable. The coordination needed to pull off singing like that while playing drums so steadily was unbelievable. His scat singing was not amateur. He had monstrous coordination to pull that off! Rest in peace Duffy you're an amazing force of nature.

Love that story, Kent! Yeah, super swinging, hard driving, happy and joyful. Dang!

Awesome! I wish I would have gotten the opportunity to be his friend. All the interviews I have seen, he would have been a good hang. Very articulate man. And he swung so hard. You have no idea how much he impacted my playing....to this day!

Interesting story, thanks for sharing. I took a partial day off from work in the 90s to go to a free concert at the University of the Pacific. Dave Brubeck (and his quartet) was playing. This is the University that Dave graduated from. After the concert, each musician held their individual clinics. I attended the drummers clinic. I don't even remember his name.

Was it a British guy by the name of Randy Jones? He may have been gone by the 90's from Brubeck.

First time to your channel. Thank you for your story about Duffy Jackson. I never knew about him. It's 2 am for me right now, and what followed after watching your video made me sit up and start tapping my feet and air playing the drums. So yeah, I checked out a few videos of DJ playing just to have a bit of the experience you had. I am jacked (and I gotta be at work in 6 hours!) just from RUclips so I can only imagine how you got jacked up. You can see that the Count can't hold him back (as if trying to suppress a smile of appreciation for his mastery of the skins). Just awesome - impossible for Duffy to not keep perfect time! Thanks again. Look forward to coming back to your channel for some new (for me) stories. On a sober and happy note, my father, who introduced me to the love of Jazz, passed away the same month as Duffy. After maybe 20 years of no jazz in my life, it's now coursing through my veins again. Maybe my father will get to meet 'ol Duffy and make friends up in heaven and start playing the old licorice stick again. Subbed.
P.S. You may have seen the YT episode with Buddy Rich on the Tonite Show w/ JC playing Wind Machine .... Ehhhhhh!

Jim, I have a VERY similar story from 16-year-old me being blown away and driven nearly to tears, standing backstage at a Basie Orchestra show, summer 1980. I was 16 also. I got to hang with Duffy, met Freddie Green, Butch Miles hosted a party at his home that day and the guys were all pretty ‘happy’…another era. I’m going to post an ‘answer’ story video to yours specifically. I’m in NY/Maryland, where you at?
