1992 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 - Part 4: Hard start, stalling, rough idle issue

  • Originally, the Z28 would sometimes run great but frequently not start or sputter and run for a short time or stall out completely when running. After the work done in this video, the vehicle has been starting and driving reliably even if it seems to be idling very slightly rough. Here is what I have done up to this point:
    fuel filter,
    replaced ignition control module,
    tested pickup coil and the new pickup coil but left the old one in,
    observed new map sensor, already in place
    observed new o2 sensor, already in place
    observed new coolant temp sensor already in place and then reconnected it in since it had not been since I got the car
    I unplugged battery for several hours
    "reset" the throttle position sensor under direction of the previous owner, car sometimes worked but still stalled out once
    replaced oil pressure sender, This may have been the culprit...
    moved number seven cylinder plug away from oil pressure sender ...or maybe it was this or both
    Did NOT replace the coolant temp sensor nor the throttle position sensor nor the knock sensor.....yet anyway.

    I have an L98 in my 90 Vett. Low mileage but like your car a speed shop did a poor tune up and installed plugs for the cast iron heads, not aluminum. Different thread length. changed the ECM to a rebuilt unit. all so it could be sold at an auction. I feel your lack of distrust for the car. Felt the same way until I had a shop smoke test the vacuum lines and low and behold two were damaged. Thanks for giving the results of your labor. With 30+ year old cars routine Maintenace like ALL filters and fluids helps to relive some anks about going somewhere in the future. Just one less concern. It can be costly when you throw parts and time at issues with the best intentions. Thanks for sharing! Look forward to your adventures with your Camaro. Hope you get some smiles per miles!

      I have a 92 Z28 5.7.
      Right now the radiator has started leaking so I ordered a Champion 3 row aluminum. After two tries I’m giving up and I found evidence that it was really not a direct fit. I ordered a Cold Case from Camaro Central. They say it is a direct fit no mods needed….We’ll see. Found flakes in my antifreeze so I’m changing the water pump as well. I bought this car brand new and am passing it to my kids. I have plenty of spare parts too. I kinda don’t mind putting in new quality parts as I drive towards dependency for the kids.

      @@joesausage4639 Sorry to hear about your fitment issues Hope the Cold case fits? Did you get new rubber supports for the install? Not trying to spend your hard earn money, but now's the time to get any molded hoses for the cooling system. My hoses on my 90 vett looked and felt good, but in truth they were starting to split on the ends. Kind of like the Vacuum hoses. I used to just cut the split ends off. But old hoses are still old hoses that give up the ghost when you think you got it fixed. I think you owning your Camaro from new is Really cool. It's saying a lot about finding the car you always wanted and being able to hold on to it. Hope the kids get as big a kick out of it as you!

      Yes, the supports look good and I might get some more from Camaro Central. The hoses aren’t that old as I had them all replaced some time back. The front hoses all will be replaced and they are younger than all the others. I’ve been replacing connections and wire protectors too. In less than a year I’m having engine out work done, I’ll have all the hoses right side and rear replaced again. I’m about to give this car to my kids and I want it in tip top shape. I also have been getting spare parts for the car from sensors to compressor, etc.
      Thanks for the advice, it’s always welcome here.

    I own a 1991 Z28 with 33k miles. It’s a hard top so it has the 350 tune port engine. When I purchased it the miles were 23 k miles the problem I had were the fuel injection issues I found a good mechanic that figured it out. There is a part on the passenger side on the top of the tune port it is back toward the distributor. It was. 35 dollars it fixed my problem. I could start the car drive it but if it stalled it would not start if I shut the car off it would not start. But now that it’s repaired I haven’t had any problems or issues.

      I know it seems unlikely but based on the results I have concluded it had to be the oil pressure sending unit. Everything else I tried seem to have no lasting effect but once I rerouted the spark plug wire away from the oil pressure sending unit the problem went away forever

      Good point....I didnt ever make the connection that the injector cleaner may have caused this. Eventually, either me moving the spark plug wire away from the fuel pump cutoff sensor fixed it or maybe just driving the car cleared out the junk I loosened up the fuel system.

    • @MindofMatter
      @MindofMatter  2 года назад +2

      Is it a TPI engine? As you may have seen in the video description, i replaced or checked a few things. Here is what I would try if I were you:
      replace ignition control module (cheap and easy)
      unplug new coolant temp sensor and see if anything changes
      Replace coolant temp sensor if car works better with it unplugged
      unplugged battery for several hours
      "reset" the throttle position sensor
      replaced oil pressure sender and check that the sparkplug wires arent interfering with this sensor
      I am not a real mechanic so replacing parts is what I often try (versus testing them) but the parts are cheap so not a huge deal

    • @MindofMatter
      @MindofMatter  Год назад

      @@jermalramsey1567 I noticed one of my spark plug wires was passing close by the oil pressure sender unit which caused sporadic poor running. At the same time I rerouted the spark plug wire I also change the oil pressure sending unit. This seemed to resolve the problem once and for all.
      I read online that a drop in oil pressure as measured by that sending unit would cause the car to shut down the fuel pump to save the engine and so I think that's what was happening just sporadically off and on.

    My 91 ta is acting similar but it always ran fine for 20k miles.

    • @MindofMatter
      @MindofMatter  2 года назад

      It's a 5.7 tpi? Make sure spark plug wire is not near the oil pressure switch underneath the car, since it's free.
      Beyond that I'm not skilled or patient enough to test every component so consider replacing the cheap parts first like the module in the distributor, coolant temp or throttle sensors, or even just a basic spark plug and wires to start
