People are interested in "what if"s, they may simply feel intrigued by a particular dynamic of a particular character without being religiously attached to the actual identity of the show. Hell, I have seen people ship characters from shows or video games they didn't even watch ! And you know what that's ok too, the ONLY goal of entertainment is to bring joy.
