    Keep in mind that Magic had retired a year earlier and hadn't played competitive ball, other than some preseason games and the All-Star game, since they lost to Jordan in the Finals back in 91. That he could walk onto the court a year later, assert himself as the alpha of half the Dream Team, and get under prime Jordan's skin will tell you something about just how special Magic was.

    • @BenTIStudios
      @BenTIStudios 4 года назад +43

      Getting under Jordan's skin was VERY easy. Which turned out to be a good thing. He is a very emotional, insecure person by nature. But that also brings out the defense mechanism to immediately protect what's his, and dominate whats ever challenging him.

    • @BenTIStudios
      @BenTIStudios 4 года назад +3

      Magic certainly wasn't the Alpha on that team. That goes to Jordan. That said, even Jordan said Pippen was the best player overall for the dream during games. Magic, bird, Malone etc all have said as much. Pippen was animal. Chuck Daly said as well and also said 'no one saw it coming'.

    Magic is so humble , always gives other great players plenty of credit . I watched him play live once after he officially retired , his intensity was off the charts . Game 1 NBA finals in 1991 explains it all . Would have loved to a have seen both MJs compete over time if they were the same age . Jordan peaked when some of the greats were ageing or the next wave of stars were too young , the west was weak . If NY got over the bulls they also would have one the titles aside from 93 . Jordan deserves the credit for making the most of a 6 year window . 6 titles from 6 attempts won’t be repeated . The modern system won’t allow it .

      From Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski to managing director Jerry Colangelo to NBA elders, the issue of James’ immaturity and downright disrespectfulness had become a consuming topic on the march to the Olympics. The course of history could’ve changed dramatically, because there was a real risk that James wouldn’t be brought to Beijing based on fears his monumental talents weren’t worth the daily grind of dealing with him.
      When the mandate had been to gather these immense egos and get the NBA’s greatest players to fit into a program, no one had a more difficult time meshing into the framework than James. Other players made it a point to learn the names of staffers and modestly go about their business without barking orders and brash demands.
      No one could stand James as a 19-year-old in the 2004 Athens Olympics, nor the 2006 World Championships. Officials feared James could become the instigator of everything they wanted to rid themselves for the ’08 Olympics. For as gifted as James was, Krzyzewski and Colangelo subscribed to a belief that with Kobe Bryant(notes) joining the national team in 2007, they could win a gold medal in ’08 with or without LeBron James. Behind the scenes, officials had taken to calling James’ inner circle, “The Enablers.” No one ever told him to grow up. No one ever challenged him. And yet, James was still a powerful pull for his teammates, and everyone had to agree they could no longer let his bossy and belittling act go unchecked. These weren’t the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Team USA wasn’t beholden to him.

    Two summer's to remember for all of us who grew up on the NBA during the late 80s and early 90s...Bulls win a big series against Portland and win the NBA championship, go on to play in Barcelona and elevate the game itself to new heights, come back and win the title the following summer in an incredibly awesome 6 game series with Charles Barkley and an all star supporting cast of players. Majerle was setting records for some of his long range bombs long before guys like Seth Curry came along. I miss those days...

  • @chrism1598

    2:50 This is the reason why MJ is the GOAT. I'll admit I'm biased growing up in Chicago in the late 80s and 90s, but it is what it is. There's phenomenal players now and back then, but not like Jordan. His will to not only win, but absolutely demoralize and beat you down along the way is like none other...and he had the ability to back it up. The closest I've ever seen is Kobe in both ability and competitiveness, but MJ was still a notch above. A great stat is other than the year Jordan broke his foot, his half year coming back from retirement / baseball, his last year with the Bulls and the Wizard years, his lowest single season FG% is higher than Kobe's best single season FG%. And the 2 things Kobe was better at in the regular season, 3pt% and FT%, Jordan beat him in both stats in the postseason. Jordan missed some game winners and had off nights, but rarely came up short when he got to the biggest moments. He would have hit that 3 Curry missed which gave Toronto a ring. In those moments the guy was so clutch that we all knew what was going to happen before it did. Even opponents years later have said the same thing...that's what it is to be the GOAT.
