Bluth could of been the next Disney, thanks to him though, we got Disney to push boundaries and jump out of their comfort zone. Thanks to Bluth's competitive underdog spirit we got the renaissance.
7:40, that unique glitter effect I see in every single Don Bluth movie (usually done in orange/brass and of higher, clearer quality. For example, the sparkle affect on Princess Daphne and the sparkle on the shooting diamond stars in All Dogs go to Heaven.)... How the holy fuck do they do that? It's beautiful.
Eli Copperman Yes, yes I do. However, I can not say anything much about the god-awful sequel. Since that is also in the territory of shitty-ass direct-to-DVD sequels along with the library of direct-to-DVD Disney sequels.
I can easily see the footage used @ 22:03 as a representation of Disney seeing those results as a catalyst encouraging them to step up their game, which could easily explain what happened in the subsequent chapters of this lookback since then.
Omg i'm sorry but when you brought up An American Tail and had Somewhere out there playing in the background, it brought a tear to my eye and how much i miss my childhood
Spielberg and Bluth should have started their collaboration with a short film starring who was then Universal's star cartoon character (like Mickey Mouse is to Disney and Bugs Bunny is to WB). That character? Woody Woodpecker. It would have been really cool to see Dom DeLuise and Phillip Glasser (the voice of Fievel) play Woody's enemies Buzz Buzzard and Andy Panda respectively, not to mention a stroke of pure genius. It especially would have been cool to see it released with Back to the Future in 1985 and spark interest in seeing An American Tail.
You know it is ironic that in those days films and products were kept aa secret from everyone but now everyone is shown how the production is going and what film is going to be released on what day.

You know the N64 version of Diddy Kong Racing always reminded me of Don Bluth's films, from the atmosphere right down to the story in the instruction booklet that has more lore than the game even needed to have but that I still appreciated anyway. You know one day I'd like to see Don Bluth and whoever is still with him draw the entire N64 version of Diddy Kong Racing's cast in their art style as since Diddy Kong Racing for the N64 reminds me of his films I'd love to see an interpretation of it in the style of the films it reminds me of, not to mention Don Bluth is no stranger to working with video games as evidenced by Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.
Well why don't you go back to your little hole you crawled out of and continue playing your PS4 or Xbox One, praying that you'll one day manage to find anyone that'll think what your doing is impressive enough for anybody to date you?
A lot of really good movies came out in 1982. The secret of nimh, e.t, blade runner, the dark crystal, tron, the thing... and many of them were overshadowed at the time by the success of others.
Thank God I stumbled upon your channel. I am constantly searching for content regarding Don Bluth's animations and, also, everything from the classic era, independent, stop-motion etc, so you can imagine how happy I am discovering your videos^^ I wonder if you could comment on the ongoing production of the Dragon's Lair's movie, is there any new information or update on the project?? Also, I discovered that there is a publication (magazine format) by Don Bluth called 'Don Bluth's TOON TALK, released in 2000, but damn, they are very hard to find. Would be awesome if you manage to make a video about them. Thx for everything!
It's interesting how this video starts with a shot of Hayao Miyazaki. I started thinking that Don Bluth pretty much is the Miyazaki of America. Of course, not all of Bluth's films are jems, but it was never really the same movie twice, now that I think of it.
I know this is an old video but I just want to let you know that it is common in films for the employees to sign 'none disclosure agreements.' It's usually in your contract that you won't tell anyone about the details of the film during and after production.
Don Bluth is the most dedicated animator ever born, and there will never be another one like him, even in photoshop editing, i guess 3d modelling or coding is close but he was, is, will be the best forever, RIP don bluth
Loved everything Don worked on. His contribution to Disney was a great start. Here are my thoughts on the films he was fully recognised for. Pete’s Dragon - Very wholesome and charming, great story, very creative combination of live action and hand drawn animation and Elliott steals the show big time. Small One - Very heartfelt and sweet story and I like how they based it in Bethlehem. Banjo the Woodpile Cat - Very fun, great characters, simple story and I like how Scatman Crothers was casted as another musical cat. Secret of Nimh - Very well-written premise, excellent animation, great characters, great use of fantasy and scientific themes with some heavy and dark moments. An American Tail - Very cute and memorable movie, great setting and concept and I like how they incorporated the themes on emigration from Russia to America.

The Land Before Time will always be my favorite. But that doesn't in any way suggest any of the other works are necessarily lesser creations. Wait, Don Bluth was Mormon? This now makes so much sense since I have a series of videos from an ex Disney animator that pretty much animated the stories in both the Bible AND Book of Morman
Its such a chad level Massive Flex toward disney when you realize Bluths 1st big project was making a film adaptation of a dark fantasy novel when disney completely failed to do the same thing.
I'm writing a biopic for Don Bluth over his glory years (I think up to Land before time) that I'm going to present to PBS for a special this summer. Would any of you like to see the draft that I have written so far
I had a dream the other night that I can only describe as a Don Bluth Avengers, where like all these Don Bluth characters assembled - like if Mrs. Brisby, Fievel, Charlie B. Barker, Bartok, and even those penguins got together. Not sure if it's a trippy-weird idea or awesome.
Jim Belushi and Martin Short's characters from *Pebble and the Penguin*. Isn't that funny - I don't remember their names but I remember the actors who voiced them.
Don Bluth's studio was the key to revitalizing the whole animation industry. Folks began to change course because of Don's films. This was years BEFORE DreamWorks Animation.
Yep! That was which they called as the "UA Paperclip" logo, and the music itself was completely epic. You have to see it for yourself. It lasted for a few films including "Rocky 3" and "Octopussy". During that time, it was many of the older UA films that plastered the UA logos like the "Hexagon", "Circle" and the Transamerica "T" logos. ruclips.net/video/kuaJm8_0cZ0/видео.html
InvaderPet I admittedly got a kick out of that visual representation of the problem (basically that image of a frisbee disk adorned with the cape and amulet), so much so that I easily thought of that point in this lookback when I see that trivia bit shown at the beginning of my digital copy of the film that I ordered off of Amazon Prime.
Don Bluth’s movies traumatized me as a child. No, I don’t care if that makes me a weakass kid. Yes, I *AM* aware that preferring the Land Before Time sequels over the original as a child makes me a philistine.
Bluth could of been the next Disney, thanks to him though, we got Disney to push boundaries and jump out of their comfort zone. Thanks to Bluth's competitive underdog spirit we got the renaissance.
The Secret of Nimh is one of the best animated films ever, I used to watch it a lot when I was younger, and when I still had a VCR.
Julio Torres I wanna claim to say that it’s my favorite film in the world but I’ve never been able to finish it
its on amazon prime :)
Secret of Nimh is great, but in my opinion, An American Tail is a much better film.
The Secret Of Nimh For Me , It's Look Like A Clasiccal Film By Disney Wow
I saw that film in either my first or second-grade class, can't remember which.
Don Bluth was a guest star on Nostalgia Critics review of Dragons Liar.
Let's hope he makes that game into a real movie!
Jinx Batstar Did he finish it?
Rob Burns no. It was almost wormed off. His birthday was yesterday. So he will finish it just like HTTYD3
Bluth is a true artist. It's funny how similar he was starting out, to Walt.
Yep . Walt And Don Both Start Drawing Animation When They Still A Kid .
Unfortunately, one of the reasons he failed was he didn't have a Roy Disney to be a good financial adviser and money man.
I don't know, but I'll say it looks lovely and it makes Princess Daphne even more glamorous.
I think it involves using certain gels.
My favorite Don Bluth movie is The Secret of Nimh as well.
I like American Tail, but yeah.
Eli Copperman I loved that movie as a kid.
Xaviergray87 So did I, and I still love it to this day. Do you still like it to this day as well?
Eli Copperman Yes, yes I do. However, I can not say anything much about the god-awful sequel. Since that is also in the territory of shitty-ass direct-to-DVD sequels along with the library of direct-to-DVD Disney sequels.
Xaviergray87 Exactly. I haven't seen the sequel, but from what I've heard, it's definitely for the best.
don bluth is the angel of animation
Oh man, I would have LOVED to see Bluth's version of Beauty and the Beast
+peppermint23 I know right? I would have loved to see his take on the Beast.
Same here as well as "East of the Sun, West of the Moon", "Satyrday" and "The Velveteen Rabbit; I saw the artwork"
Are you trying to say Emma Watsons version isn't good enough huh? you misgynist freak!!!!
@@yuripantyhose4973 No one said anything about Emma Watson's version. Chill out, and don't try to stir up arguments needlessly.
In that case, I'd imagine if Don didn't leave Disney. But yeah, that wouldn't be too bad.
This Guy is Incredible, so is the narrator.
I can easily see the footage used @ 22:03 as a representation of Disney seeing those results as a catalyst encouraging them to step up their game, which could easily explain what happened in the subsequent chapters of this lookback since then.
"I know cats. They go meow" - Animat
sometimes i have my cat in my apt. i basically prefer kemono (furry) friends now.
Also Animat: These cats on the other hand go, "RAAAAAAAAAAAWR!" CRUNCH!
You mean like that animated movie "cats don't dance"

woody woodpecker.. o i forget everything but his laugh
or Universal would have Steven’s animation studio: Amblimation to make some new Woody Woodpecker shorts.
@@benrobson3442 Yeah, another missed opportunity.

HM Smith “THESE CATS AT THE OTHER HAND GO... (ROAR!)”

I liked it
Very good movie
Agreed
Fac
Then put All Dogs Go To Heaven in the registry too.
0:56 “NO! NOT THOSE SHORTS!”
4:34 So Bluth used the name "Zazu" first, huh? 15 years later, Disney would reuse that name in "The Lion King"
Guy really got no respect...
+Elise Bottle
What do you mean?
I mean he is one of the most underrated animation geniuses of all time. The meddling execs gave him no end of headaches. It's quite sad, really...
Fun Fact: Bruce Timm, the creator of the DC Animated Universe, worked under Bluth on Secret of Nimh
Oh wow!
Wow.
Now I know why I wanna see this movie.
Nightmare Ned creators also worked on The Secret of NIMH (1982)
Happy 80th Birthday Don Bluth.
the pebble and the penguin it's one of my favorite Don Bluth movies from my childhood like anastasia, Land before time, american tail.

my first Animation Lookback I've first experienced on the Mr. Coat Website back in the summer of 2012!
Out of curiosity what was the music that was playing when the angel silhouette appeared? Just love it. Wish Don Bluth would make a FNAF movie.
Uh Too gay.
Molotera Legarreta oh shut da fock up tulip.
It's called Spirit's Lament from The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Secret of Nimh 2 was one of those sequels no one asked for nor wanted.

Elliott the dragon is one of my all-time favorite cartoon characters! Thank you Don Bluth!

fival goes west was probably one of the only sequels he did right, thats not land before time
I hope your talking about Steven Spielberg, because Don Bluth had nothing to do with Fievel Goes West.

tripp cory I'm Pixargirl on Deviantart. Don't say my name or I else.
What penguins?
Jim Belushi and Martin Short's characters from *Pebble and the Penguin*. Isn't that funny - I don't remember their names but I remember the actors who voiced them.
+Amelia Doubleyou all to protect planet Bob!
+Amelia Doubleyou then dirk saved the princess.
Yes, that too. Now how do the SPACE ACE characters fit in?!
Don Bluth's studio was the key to revitalizing the whole animation industry. Folks began to change course because of Don's films. This was years BEFORE DreamWorks Animation.

Very interresting ,this video is great! Thank you.
Aurora AKA United Artists, I remember the rotating UA At the beginning.

I personally don't think Wham-O would have had much of a chance in court, given that they apparently never tried to go after the book.
East of the Sun and West of the moon
sounds interesting.
Don Bluth is a hero to me
Don Bluth’s movies traumatized me as a child.
No, I don’t care if that makes me a weakass kid.
Yes, I *AM* aware that preferring the Land Before Time sequels over the original as a child makes me a philistine.
omg so much of my childhood because of a man i never knew.
Is that Don Bluth's family from 21:26 to 21:34?
