I’ve been eager to try this out in my team. Even if it’s still lacking some complexity compared to Figma, you can cut cost when it comes to licenses. And as a designer I think it’s easy to get too attached to the tools. We should be able to realize our ideas with whatever we have at hand. A good designer would be able to create good solutions even with an open source software IMO.
Yes! With this update, the tool comes much closer to Figma than ever before :) This competition will drive Figma license prices down hopefully. More competition, the better for the users.
@@PunitChawla With everything that is possible, there is one thing that is extremely important to me - never wait. I've always just loaded some sample files, but it jerks and jerks along. And in Figma I have a file with 12 pages, on each page at least 12-15 desktop layouts and the mobile version. And there are photos everywhere.... It works like lightning, drag, move, zoom, switch between pages ... just everything. I have no idea how they do it, but they do it
It's getting really competitive, all for our benefit. This is awesome! Are you still mainly using Figma or have you been using/learning other tools lately?
Yes exactly! Competition brings better products and pricing too. I've been using Figma for most of my stuff. However, I like experimenting with tools like Penpot or protopie from time to time.
Guys! This video is an opinion piece :) the more competition Figma has, the better products we will get as users and consumers. I do believe that Figma is the better product, however encouraging tools like Penpot will help even Figma and the industry improve.
something we miss in this app is plugin and interactive component variant..... its good software for an open source btw.. the dev team is very working hard
Sadly Figma has become the Meta of design tools. Its a monopoly now because of the ecosystem and partnerships the team behind Figma have created. For Penpot to compete, there will be so many things at play- familiarity with shortcuts, advancement in code handoff, modular approach to the design system.. all of which I see Penpot trying to do but still not quite there yet. For the moment it looks like a tool that is emulating Figma but without all the advanced features. I hope they can prove me wrong, but at this point I dont see it.
I do agree with some of your points. Also, I feel for a free and open source project and a team that doesn't make big bucks yet, they are doing a good job. I see a future where there is more than one UI design tool that can compete fairly in the space.
It's not really a replacement for XD or Figma, yet. There needs to be a little more work done to the new component system to more easily and intuitively allow for states/variants. Once that's done, it's a legitimate replacement. In addition, it also needs a migration tool to migrate XD files to penpot, however, with a fully functioning component system, that wouldn't be hinderance to using it for new projects.
Thanks great feedback! True, i also feel that a lot of companies rely on self made plugins, for which there is no feature yet. Hoping they launch an update soon.
pen pot is still buggy.. I used this in Feb/march when Figma made the dev mode paid.. The Arboard making was smooth af.. but when i Imported multiple svg (5-6 artboards)... it started lagging... the lag went so bad that i have to shut down my browser... Never happened this with any other software... But As a open source it needs time ... and open source softwares usually gets better overtime... Edit - Still laggy.. after latest update
I ama beginner in UI/Ux and i am super confused about what tolearn after figma..can someone give me a clear roadmap so that it would be helpful in ym journey..thanks
It's getting closer. If you compare pricing and org structure then Figma fails. It's all about evening the odds and is a personal preference at the end of the day. Figma has plugins, better teams, better prototyping features etc. for sure. But I've seen some teams barely use 50% of Figma features but are paying the higher pricing. This could be a cool alternative.
Actually, PenPot has two foundational advantages: 1. Direction: Figma is more like a huge container transport truck trying to do a 180 degree turn. They’ve started by making a prototyping software centred around designers and now trying to make it dev friendly. The way auto layout works, the fact that there’s no css grid, that they don’t even seem to be thinking about units other than pixels, and that there’s no box model (separate margin and padding with the ability to set negative margin) are exactly remnants of that and I don’t know if they’re ever going to be fixed. Or anyway sooner than penpot which started as a dev platform. Penpot is a rapid electric car. 2. Licensing. Figma to *insert web dev platform here* and Figma plugins rely heavily on the end points that the Figma team gives you access to, because the rest of the platform is completely closed source. Penpot started as an open source app and plan to keep it that way which means that when plugins/code transformers do come out they are going to integrate much more smoothly and be way more powerful. Also means that .penpot files have a better integration chance with any other design software than .fig files will ever have.
Yes, we can still stay with Figma not loosing out panties but also explore this new Pot. Who knows we can use it to share multiple files with clients for free. Not possible in figma . Simply for this it’s a winner.
Luckily penpot has some plugins etc on the way too. They already have a dedicated community in place, so hopefully we get to see more in the coming months
I disagree. It's all about the fundamentals. I tried very hard to make PenPot work but ended up just burning a tonne of time and went back to Figma. Wishing the team all the best as would honestly love to see them succeed. However, Figma is so polished that $12 a month pales into insignificance when I put a value on my productivity.
Thank you so much for the feedback!
Sorry but once upon a time chatgpt is also open-source 🥺

Penpot is much better than what Figma was couple of years ago. This means Penpot can be used seriously by designers.
figma is only lack of dev-mode permission to NOT give them an edit access. what a silly policy.

Yes! They have some extentions and libraries, but the plugins concept is missing. Hoping they will soon launch that

It’s stupid easy to self host Penpot. I self host it because it’s fun 😂
Thanks for sharing your experience. More people/companies should try it out once.
sir do you suggest stop learning figma and start learning this tool ! I'm a newbie! what do you suggesst sir?
Not anytime soon. Figma is now at industry standard level, so go for Figma for sure :)
@@PunitChawla thankyou ❤️
learn figma
I ama beginner in UI/Ux and i am super confused about what tolearn after figma..can someone give me a clear roadmap so that it would be helpful in ym journey..thanks
Learn typography iconography grid systems hig guideline and material design differences etc.
You should learn a no code tool like framer
Penpot or Lunacy?
Penpot for more UI and code work. Lunacy is great for graphics and assets.
Or Creatie?
I think you misunderstood the term 'Ready of QA'. It actually refers to 'Quality Assurance'.
they need to make it run without docker
Luckily for now people can access it on their web platform. But I feel this will be good feedback for them.
whoever makes the best AI is going to win. i want to create an app by clicking and dragging shit into place
Let's see how AI pans out into these design tools.
This is not even in the same ballpark as Figma, it’s like comparing a toy car to a ferrari

Honestly, its good but how penpot makes money... we need them to survive..
they will make money just like blender...
Yea the blender model is what I feel they might use in the future.
You need to fix the microphone in your videos, you sound canny. other than that video was good thanks.
Yeah! Some issue with OBS, still trying to fix it. Mic works perfectly on other software.
figma killer that looks like figma aight. but if ever adobe f*ck with figma then ill consider this one.
Hahah! Their deal didn't go through. So you don't have to worry about. This could be a less expensive alternative for people in the future.
Sorry but penpot is buggy soft
Still a lot of tweaks needed, fortunately you can communicate your issues with the Penpot team.

do you even watch / review your video before uploading ? see 2:35 . let me know if you can hear properly
It's just in left channel, it happens sometimes bro. Chill, its managable.
I do review the vids since I edit them myself. It sounded OK in my speaker, might be an issue with normalisation
