  • My customer asked me to inspect his skylight. Yes it was bad....VERY BAD! So here's just a quick run down of it's replacement. Also, I give my opinion about skylight sealant.

With your videos, I have been able to maintain my leaky, less than perfect 2010 Holiday Rambler camper. Now maybe I will be able to maintain it for another 10 years and break even. I do not wish for another one, because they all have the same problems. Thanks James

    Thank you for the information, I purchased an older RV that does not have an inner liner and the skylight appears to be installed from the inside of the shower. most likely by the previous owner. is an inner liner necessary? can I install the new skylight on the outside of the RV where it belongs without an inner liner? If an inner liner is necessary how do I find the correct fit for the newly purchased skylight? thanks.

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  5 лет назад +2

      An inner liner is not necessary and can be difficult to find one that fits. It's nice to have one as it reduces condensation on the inside of the exterior lens but more and more fewer inner lenses are installed by factories. If a skylight manufacturer offers an inner panel, they will give the dimensions of the hole it fits into. Yes you can install the exterior, the main conercern is to make sure it does not leak water into the roof. There are a few skylights that do install from the inside and I do not trust those. Thanks!

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  4 года назад +2

      Great question. The easiest would be a 1/8th inch plate of aluminum so that it has enough body not to flex with a perimeter screw down.

  • @Newman81964
    @Newman81964 3 года назад +1

    I would get some aluminum strips with holes drilled at the mounting holes of the skylight and then ran the screws through the aluminum strip and the skylight attaching everything down. It will spread out the load to the entire edge instead of just at the mounting holes. A lot stronger and less chance of causing cracks at the mounting holes.

    • @AZExpert

      It would, these are crazy cheap and crazy expensive at the same time.

    What's your honest opinion on roof sealants? the Dicor sealant I see used a lot with these rubber roofs seems to crack after a few yrs. and roof leaks happen, a friend of mine who does commercial and industrial rubber roofs for a living recommends Mulco Super Expert caulking and claims it will last at least 15 yrs. and will flex with any movement of the RV , I'm going to put a new rubber roof on my RV soon and want to use the best product for long life and low maintenance, please advise.

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  2 года назад

      the best advice I can give is that the lap sealant is liquid flashing to redirect water and not the seal preventing water intrusion. If water is leaking it, there is an installation issue which should be addressed.

    • @grantmccabe8966
      @grantmccabe8966 2 года назад +1

      @@AZExpert Yes I believe that the lap sealants are misused in a lot of cases, I have watched a lot of videos to educate myself prior to tackling this job and I've seen too many people just slathering lap sealant over top of lap sealant and ending up with a huge mess and I will avoid that and apply just a good bead of proper sealant on my flanges etc. I'm a bit of a handyman and try to service my equipment myself, I've watched a lot of your videos and learned a lot of procedures and tips, I think the roofs of RV's are the Achilles heal of these machines because unattended leaks as you know can put your vehicle in the grave. Thanks for your honest reply and thanks for sharing your valuable and professional demos that I'm sure have saved many people money and time.

    I love watching your videos because its the thing I do everyday for my job as a camper RV tech. You tell it how it is and reveal your secrets, Its like being back in class. One question I have is that there is another R.V. vlogger who states about the lapseal that " the only one who puts more on is a MORON" without giving an alternative. I know lapseal doesn't last but I'm not sure what else to use other then lapseal.

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  4 года назад +2

      I watch his channel too. Truthfully, lapseal is not necessary. Many high end buses and class B units don't use lap seal because it's ugly. Its main purpose is to re-direct water. The real alternative is making sure the component is secured and sealed underneath. Besides, "repair tape" or ecapsulated roof coatings(spray on roof) I'm not aware of many alternatives. The youtuber you reference builds custom roofs with "curbing" which is a raised flashing that "redirects" water so it doesn't need lap seal. Thank you for the encouragement and support. I'm glad you enjoy the channel!
