My brother was found dead yesterday and it is very hard to cope with. Thank God for this song to help ease my pain in this horrific transition in my life. R.I.P. Tom.
This is probably the best instrumental I have ever heard. Rarely do I ever hear a song that I like from the very beginning until the very end. This is easily one of my favorite songs. When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation take me home? RIP CLIFF BURTON
This is truly a masterpiece of Metallica, its hard to understand how they could put so much into this song. Cliff will stay in our hearts and our minds till the day we die, this band alone inspired me to learn guitar which helps me put my own thought into a song. Thanks you for everything Metallica! ROCK ON! /,,/
one of the greatest songs of Metallica for sure. The melodic aspect is amazing.... and than when cliff speak those words in the middle of the song.... brings to the song a extra bright... I like so many bands.... but there is no one like metallica... Cya.
I always get tears in my eyes when I hear this song! This proofs that Cliff never died in the hearts of fans! Metallica will never die, they will Thrash into heaven! Metallica forever and R.I.P. Cliff !!!!!! Metal up your ass
I used to say the say the same thing. My goal was to learn this song and orion on guitar. It is 12 years later and I long ago learned those songs. Metallica was the band that started me on the path I've chosen and I wouldn't change it.
God Bless You. This is probably my favorite song too, and I've even gone as far as to tell my brother to have it played at my funeral if I leave this earth before him. I'm sure he's in a much better place, and you'll see him again one day.
4:40-7:35 probably one of the best parts ever played in a song... this is probably one of the best songs ever, it always reminds me of cliff....it makes all my hairs on my neck stand up every time i listen to it...amazing MetallicA is the best band ever rock on guys
When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives. All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home? You are home, Cliff. We miss you. Hard to believe it 25 years, in September, that you left us. Rest in Peace. Your soul is heard every time we listen to your music. Peace.
Alot of people criticize James and Lars for recording AJFA with no bass but think about it... is that not the MOST heartrending memorium they could have left for their dear friend and band mate - an entire album with no bass to be heard that way forever? You've heard of the empty place setting at the dinner table for the deceased? Well this is the record with missing bass.
This song really is one of their best pieces of work by far. It was written in memory of and dedicated to Cliff Burton(Their original bassist) after he passed. The lyrics recited late in the song where actually a poem written by Cliff Burton not originally intended to be lyrics to a song. R.I.P Burton and
I almost cried when they showed Cliff's grave. You can really feel their anguish in the song. What's sad is that Cliff was probably the most well-adjusted of the band-members. If you were going to expect one of them to die young, it would have been James or Lars (or Dave, before he left). It just goes to show that death doesn't discriminate; He'll come for all of us, eventually.
this was a good choice by metallica to play this song as a tribute to cliff. He will be missed he was one of the best bassists for metallica R.I.P Cliff
@Guitarism12 Jason had nothing to do with writing this song. The bass riffs were written by Cliff. They were riffs that were not used, elsewhere, and so, were added as further tribute to their friend. It was only played once, live, but has been played several times as part of a medley. The words were written by a German poet, Paul Gerhardt. The title is a phrase that Cliff was fond of. Peace.
@maellen1 Wikipedia says to that: "The music consists of riffs Burton had written that had not been incorporated into songs prior to his death. The song title is a phrase that Burton was fond of."
for all the people that like to especulate about Cliff and if he was still alive ,he wouldnt make the black album or load or the S&M let me remind you guys that Cliff just to listen classical music, he went to college to be a musician , his fav bass player was the guy from lynard skynard so ... you go figure RIP Cliff thanks for everything Thanks Jason for 14 years of headbanging Go Rob you kick ass!!
good job on the video dude. some parts actually cued up well, even though different songs are being played. one of my favourite metallica songs by far.
@MrWWEThemeSongs1V2 I saw them play parts of TLITD at Birmingham 1990, they linked with Jason's solo and went into the acoustic section. Still the best gig I've ever been to. Also one of the few times they played Shortest Straw :) Track listing is in the tour date archive on encycmet.com, under Monsters of Rock 1990-91, Birmingham.
lost my girlfriend ways back shit sucks my friend you are not alone the world is tough man that is why we have this thing called music too help us one at a time in our own way.
This song is a tribute to Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a tour bus crash. It is instrumental except the spoken word piece near the end - this was a poem that Cliff wrote before he died (thanks, Toke - stoke, England) The line, "These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives" comes from the book Lord Foul's Bane, Book One of the series "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever" by Stephen R. Donaldson.
this is the most kick ass metal song ever written....if they would write lyrics to it it would be the best metallica song ever made....i luv the riff so much
hehe, the image at 5:23 of the cellos playing is the band Apocalyptica. Here is how the cello trick is done on a guitar: you hammer on very hard in the note you want and let it ring, at the same time grave the volume or your guitar and turned up and down and you get the effect of a cello, you can use a pedal too.
Cliff was a musical genius, there is no doubt about that. Does anybody know if he was classically trained? His pieces are structured so well, I think he could have written music for any instrument, in an style and in any time period of history.
"The music consists of riffs Burton had written that had not been incorporated into songs prior to his death" from wikipedia i think james arranged a composition of these riffs but i dont know what he precisely wrote and what not
"They play part of it as a Jam along with call of Ktulu and orion. The whole song will never be played live in his honor." i think it should be played live, that would be a honor to cliff, to play his masterpieces
pantera vs metallica...No contest and Justice for all is one of if not the best metal album period. Every single metal band out there ......Fuck'n loves Metallica
What do you know about that? The album isn't out yet. Oh, you mean St.Anger? Robert didn't record anything on it. He joined the band when the whole thing was done.
timebombtom86: Nope, Jason wasn't on the bus, and he had no links with Metallica at the time. He was still with his old band, Flotsam and Jetsam. James and the rest of 'em took their emotions on Jason just because they felt like it. Hazing.
@evil8675309 This is a song that Metallica made after the death of their bass player, Clifford Lee Burton. The song is a mix of all his unused riffs and a poen which he wrote. If you love Metallica, this is a song that has to be respected.
I think that the song gets heavy and fast, representing cliffs life. then in the slow part its cliffs death, and after that when it gets heavy again it shows cliff living on forever
I personally have this vision that I think should be done. I think that this should be played as Metallica's last song at their last show. This guitar also has 3 guitars... So I think they should bring Dave Mustaine back. I think this because Dave was a close personal friend of Cliff's AND, it would send a message that music is greater then personal disagreements. I think that gesture would honor Cliff the most. (My personal opinion)
My brother was found dead yesterday and it is very hard to cope with. Thank God for this song to help ease my pain in this horrific transition in my life. R.I.P. Tom.

what a great song and metallica is the best metal band of all time. r.i.p cliff burton you are still in all of the metallica fans hearts!!!
God Bless You. This is probably my favorite song too, and I've even gone as far as to tell my brother to have it played at my funeral if I leave this earth before him.

Agreed, few instrumentals have evoked emotion from me like this section has in this song. Has always and will always be a favorite of mine.

the bit at 4:40 is the most emotional composition ive ever heard. its so powerful. i love this song!! makes me get goose bumbs

RIP Cliff thanks for everything
Thanks Jason for 14 years of headbanging
Go Rob you kick ass!!
this song is dedicated to cliff
also the lyrics are a poem he wrote
and the song includes previously unrealeased riffs by the late cliff burton
good job on the video dude. some parts actually cued up well, even though different songs are being played.
one of my favourite metallica songs by far.

...And Justice For All is my favorite Metallica album (and I've heard all they've released).
ALL of metallica albums were BEAST!!!
one of my favorite songs of all time

Its really touching how they play the guitars in the beginning without the bass. signifying that it wont be the same without cliff.
this is the most kick ass metal song ever written....if they would write lyrics to it it would be the best metallica song ever made....i luv the riff so much
hehe, the image at 5:23 of the cellos playing is the band Apocalyptica. Wow I want that white Tama drums Lars is using....sweeettt!!! This song is what metallica was all about....Metal!!!
Cliff 'em all!
Rest in peace Clifford Lee Burton, "Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation take me home."
Man I love that kick drum sound... ah, the old days
Cliff was a musical genius, there is no doubt about that. Does anybody know if he was classically trained? His pieces are structured so well, I think he could have written music for any instrument, in an style and in any time period of history.
i agree with you dude. if cliff was stil alive this would be kick ass song.
one of metallica's best i believe....pure magic....
one of the metallica best songs
the broken hearts and the artists... and for all of ours who went away and 'course cliff burton, thanks to u unknown
the drums in this song are killer....as well as Mustaine's amazing guitar....but that goes without saying. One of my favorite drum songs ever.
"The music consists of riffs Burton had written that had not been incorporated into songs prior to his death" from wikipedia
i think james arranged a composition of these riffs but i dont know what he precisely wrote and what not
they have never played this song live and I expect they never will. in memory of Clifford Lee Burton. R.I.P
@TheJumpInTheFire That was Kirk bro. You can tell by teh headstock cuz James always has the ESP Explorers. It was definately a reverse ESP headstock.
RIP CLIFF
This is a fitting tribute to the driving force behind Metallica's early melodies, before James ditched the macho B.S. R.I.P. Cliff.
love the drums in this song
The distortion starting at 6:04 always gets me.
"They play part of it as a Jam along with call of Ktulu and orion. The whole song will never be played live in his honor."
i think it should be played live, that would be a honor to cliff, to play his masterpieces
Man I missed this jam!!
Excelente edición... buen trabajo!
Metallica is the best thing happened to the World !!!!!!!
Metallica 4 ever !!!!
in the black album tour he used one, you can see it in the Live Shit DVD too (the 92 one, not the Seattle)
i find it funny that were discussing this on a video of orion but the music is to live! haha, ya u have a point tho
nice thrash song and you gotta love the fretboard
the best! Cliff Burton R.I.P we love you
am i the only one who thinks James' ESP is hella badass. OF WOLF AND MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pantera vs metallica...No contest and Justice for all is one of if not the best metal album period. Every single metal band out there ......Fuck'n loves Metallica
@TheSpanks000 and of course, think he died before, could it be a way to keep his memory remaining?
will never forget you... Rest in peace Cliff..
@aktuber101 they only played the acoustic part live in Seattle 1989 (which start from 5:07), but never played it again
What do you know about that? The album isn't out yet.
Oh, you mean St.Anger? Robert didn't record anything on it. He joined the band when the whole thing was done.
super
BEST INSTRUMENTAL SONG EVER
I agree that would be a great tribute along with anethesia off the kill them all album
timebombtom86: Nope, Jason wasn't on the bus, and he had no links with Metallica at the time. He was still with his old band, Flotsam and Jetsam.
James and the rest of 'em took their emotions on Jason just because they felt like it. Hazing.
The lyrics is a poem written by Cliff Burton, this is Cliff's last song.
actually, they should play it this year (2008) because it appeared on And Justice For All, album released on 1988, not 1989.
Haven't heard this song in a long time! its awesome, just downloaded the mp3
They play part of it as a Jam along with call of Ktulu and orion. The whole song will never be played live in his honor.
fav metallica song!
Lo cierto es que si no es la mejor, es de las mejores.... T E M A Z O
metallicas instrumentals were always kick ass
for the intro i would have put the 1989 live part.... just before they burst into puppets :) gives me chills when i listen to it
he did not write it, but it was his idea to include it into the song. this song was his.
@evil8675309 This is a song that Metallica made after the death of their bass player, Clifford Lee Burton. The song is a mix of all his unused riffs and a poen which he wrote. If you love Metallica, this is a song that has to be respected.
This song is painful, very painful, and god it's a pain so fucking good.
RIP Javier.
Sorry for your loss.
THE BEST BAND. EVER. THE BEST !!!
@maellen1 its just titled for something he said. but the few words that in this song arent about cliff.
METALLICA FOREVER!!!
i love metallica and cliff burton live forever
I think that the song gets heavy and fast, representing cliffs life. then in the slow part its cliffs death, and after that when it gets heavy again it shows cliff living on forever

Pedazo de canción
Tema ---> Temazo
Nope, the bass from St. Anger was recorded by Bob Rock I think(?)
Dunno if it was from a book, I've read it was written from Cliff Burton, however you may be right.
good job men!
RIP CLIFF BASS BURTON
Absolutely Metallica is best metal band. Lars, cliff, james and kirk are like machines. They are master of metal :D
