I currently live in Apex, right next door to Cary. I have lived here most of my life. (lived outside of Boulder, CO for 3 years) Went to NC State. I am the owner of a landscape design company. I travel a lot and I agree that the Cary area is one of the best places to live in the US. The quality of schools and universities, proximity to the ocean and mountains, nice percentage of the population being from all over the world, extremely low crime rate (Except perhaps some places in Durham ),having RTP in our back yard, great concert venues and museums. All of those things and so much more make the Cary area such a great place to live.
Thank you Mike for sharing. I am in a very similar situation where I have lived in Beijing for 12 years and got married there. Now we have moved back to the U.S. looking for a town to start a family. Your video is very timely and super helpful.
Yay! Congrats! So happy for you guys. North Carolina is a very beautiful state, and my husband and I visited Asheville 5 times when we lived in Northern Kentucky. We sold our farm and house in Kentucky and moved to downtown Chicago several months ago. We absolutely love it here! Shanghai is my hometown as well, but I left China when I was a teenager, so I don't really miss there other than the people I love and care. Enjoy your new life in Cary, NC. It sounds like a great place and I'd like to visit one day!
Lived in Boston for almost 10 years, did my school at Duke previously, now moving back to RTP area. Both Boston and NC are great, I would live in Boston during the summer, and live in NC during the fall and winter.
Hi Mike老师, welcome to North Carolina! You’ve definitely made a great choice for your family. I hope you’re settling in well-I love it here! We actually subscribed to your channel a few years ago. My son started watching your videos during the Shanghai lockdown while we were still in China, but we haven’t tuned in as much since moving back to the U.S. It was your recent video on voting that brought us back! My son was so excited to see that you’re in NC now. We were wondering what led you here, and then I saw the moving video you posted a couple of months ago. I should have watched it sooner! :) I really agree with your take on the Triangle area, especially Cary as a great, family-friendly place to live. What you might not know is that we’re part of an even bigger family-our Mandarin church in Chapel Hill. We’d love to welcome you and your family to visit one weekend! We’re located near UNC-Chapel Hill’s downtown, and a lot of our members live in Cary as well. Looking forward to meeting you, and wishing you all the best as you settle in!
Happy for you to have settle down. And I'm so jealous about your RV trip. I wish we have that kind of luxury of time and money. There's a lot of stuff on our shoulders.
I remember seeing your videos about buying a condo in Shanghai during the pandemic. Today this video popped up that piqued my interest. Thanks for sharing about your journey. When Sacramento made your top two list I was almost excited for you. I am from Taiwan and have lived in the Bay Area for the past 24+ years. I think this or even Norcal like Sacramento is the best for Chinese-speaking folks. There are so many Ranch 99 or Asian markets/restaurants and communities here The weather is great (I hate cold weather and don't care about snow as I used to live in Utah for 5 years). We have a beautiful coastline, and lots of quaint seaside towns with miles upon miles of beach, We have tall mountains with redwood trees to go hiking and relax. There is no shortage of outdoor things to do and to be in nature. Then it's the diversity in culture, etc., etc. And as you mentioned West Coast is easier to fly back to China. But NC sounds cool too; I have heard good things about it. Best wishes for settling down there. I enjoyed watching your videos.
Well, if money is not an issue, everyone wants to live in New York, San Francisco and LA. You always pay for what you get. Weather, location, culture and food choices.
Welcome to Cary. My family lived here for over 20 years. We like here, very family friendly. A little boring compared to big cities. But there are a lots of green ways.
I was excited to look up Cary, NC. When I tried to look it up today, the first thing shows up was a shooting incident. That is the biggest issues for families with kids.
Hi Mike, I like your videos and watched most of them. We moved to North Carolina from San Diego 7 years ago, it’s very nice place to live. Anyway welcome to NC.
A smart decision. If you are new to Cary, please join the groups to know the local area more and sooner. I live in Cary. Apex, Morrisville and Cary are close and they are all good places. Few small towns around this area are not a bad choice either.
Hi, this is Qiang(John). I am living in Charlotte, NC. And welcome to North Carolina. Hopefully, in the near future, we can meet each other I am a fan of you. 😊
Charlotte was my favorite city when I drove across 30 states last year. North Carolina is a lovely state. I hope California is more affordable but it is what it is. I am sure things are way different for your family from life in China but I hope you have a great time to chill out.
Hey Mike, Congrats on finding the new home for your family! As someone who have lived both in Cary NC and DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia), I feel like Northern Virginia (e.g: Fairfax County) also checks lots of your boxes - 4 seasons, close to beach and mountains, great school, diverse, high Chinese density, decent food options, family friendly, etc. It would be great if you could share more on the why you guys decided to pass the area. I'm just super curious. Thanks and congrats again!
Welcome to Cary!!! All my friends are sending me your video! My family have lived in NC for over 20 years, and lived in Cary for over 5 years! Would love to meet you and your family and share more great restaurants with you! - S😊
We live in the South Bay Area of California, and what a coincidence-we chose Cary, NC, for our retirement home over Elk Grove! Cary is much better than Elk Grove. The airport at RTP is more convenient, the people are incredibly nice, there's more greenery, plenty of Asian supermarkets, and more trails to enjoy. We love Cary!
Ya I agree. We liked the things around Elk Grove but the town itself is nothing special. In the end we realized we’ll spend 98% of the time in the town we live, not in the surrounding areas, so we chose Cary.
After watching the video of Mr. Mike, I benefited a lot. I not only learned English with Mr. Mike, but also learned a lot of philosophy of life. Mr. Mike is really a good teacher and helpful friend in the eyes of Chinese people. I really want to know what to do with Mr. Mike's RV next. Can you consider renting or selling it to me? I also want to take a tour. If you have friends with the same interest, you can be together.
Duke is not Ivy, but still pretty good uni, even better than some Ivy league school per US News rank. Nice choice, witch is my top 3 places wanna live.
Sacramento area has hot but dry summer so no mosquitoes. Cary maybe mild in summer but has got mosquitoes problem and humid. I am in Rocklin, 30 minutes North Sacramento, got Good schools, green city with a lot of parks, very safe city, family friendly, home price is affordable for young family with kids, most people here are from the Bay Area, close to Folsom lake, American river, Lake Tahoe, SFO, Only cons is the hot summer .
I’m in Roseville and there are definitely mosquitoes or similar insects, very active in the evening. Me and my husband both got multiple bites just spending 10 minutes in the backyard yesterday…
@@maikelaoshi I live in Elk Grove. My family moved from Bay Area to Beijing for 10 years, and then returned to the U.S. in 2023. We considered Rocklin and Roseville, but Elk Grove has more Asian markets and is a bit farther from the forecasted fire areas, so we don't get as much smoke during California's fire season. I like this small town. Everything is very convenient here. In the summer, my kids can swim and play baseball, and it isn’t too cold in the winter. We go skiing at Lake Tahoe. Additionally, I don't like the "Asian competitive atmosphere", so I chose a community with some Chinese residents but not too many. The family life here is great, with people from various ethnic backgrounds.
In fact, I think Elk Grove is a very good choice, especially if there is someone in the family who works in the California government. They can live very comfortably for the rest of their lives, with good pensions, stable jobs, and plenty of free time to enjoy life.
I have been looking for a place to retire, Cary NC is my first choice! It is also a great place to work, play, and raise a family!
I just moved out of Cary, NC, to Boston recently as I changed job. Like you, I really love both places, but do agree it seems so easy to spend money in Boston (that's what annoys me now). The best part I missed about Cary, NC is its parks/trails/greenways, which are really accessible - a tons of good hiking places just within 30 minutes. Also, great supermarkets, groceries, which are indeed better than many of the big cities. Also, I had a great apartment in Cary. Were not for the recent relocation, I'd definitely check out the beach and the mountains this summer or fall. And I agree, Cary meets everything on your check list - so enjoy your life in Cary!
Welcome to NC. *Carowinds is a good theme park on NC/SC border. They have a water park, too. *Billy Graham Library is nice in Charlotte. They close at 5pm. They are open in the evenings for the holidays and have a live animal nativity and horse carriage rides in December. *Biltmore Estate is pretty in Asheville. They have a winery. *Cherokee has the casino and a lot of native American stuff. Nice to visit. *Outer Banks is beautiful. Wild horses on one of the beaches there. The Wright Brothers museum is out there, and you can climb Hatteras. *Myrtle Beach is nice. Lots of stuff to do there. Kind of commercial now. (Better to go in the office season) Don't speed through any of the towns on the way there, not even a mile over. They are built on tourists. *Asheboro has a zoo. *Riverbanks zoo in Columbia, SC is bigger. *Lake Lure is a pretty place to visit. The have small beach. Some shops and restaurants. Climb chimney rock. *Gem mining at Hiddenite. *Blue ridge parkway is a nice drive. Nice trails. * Zootastic and Tiger world are nice animal reserves. *Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are great vacation spots in TN. *Renaissance Festival fixing to start in Concord for the fall. *Have lots of fun! *PS the Charlotteans here don't drive in the snow. When they mention the "s" word on the weather, make sure you stock up on milk and bread.😂 (That might just be Charlotte)
I went to the RTP area in 2007, right next to Cary, NC. Absolutely loved it. Great choice. In the fall, the Blue Ridge Parkway will be gorgeous. Although it doesn't have "National Park" in its name, it's part of the National Park System in the US.
Speaking of food, 4 places left me good impressions during my visit. In Cary, there is a somewhat authentic Chinese place called "Mama Wok". But with the inflow of Chinese immigrants, there must be loads more authentic and good Chinese places these days. The second one is also Chinese. It was a buffet place in the shops near 54 x 55 highways. I forgot the name and the place is probably closed or changed management now. It was so cheap and so authentic, and not bad. A lot of blue-collar workers went there for lunch, for as little as under $6 (pre-tax) back in 2007! Although it was 2007, lunch buffet for under $6 which was good was still hard to find. I would definitely go back and check it out if I ever get to return to NC RTP (Research Triangle Park - Raleigh, Durham, Chappel Hill) area. The third one was "Slice of New York". I love their white pizza. 4 different kinds of cheeses on a pizza base and nothing else. Absolutely delicious. The last one was in the mountains. The food was called "loaded potato". A scoop of butter and a scoop of spreadable cheese on a baked potato. Guilty and yum. Can't forget it.
My top two concerns for choosing a place to live: school, safety. Of course, within the affordable price range and distance to work place. This is how I end up here and never regretted.
OMG Welcome to RDU! As a Chinese American who lives in nearby Raleigh, I can attest Cary is pretty great! Great neighborhoods, great for family and great food scene (and there’s a 四川火锅 place owned by someone from Sichuan)!

We’re just glad that you and the family will stay here in USA for a while. 🎉🎉🎉

Yay!

Good choice. I live in Cary NC for 12 years. I love it so much, especially the weather, super long autumn and spring.
Great choice! Cary is a fantastic place to settle down. Hope you and your family have a good time!
I really agree with your take on the Triangle area, especially Cary as a great, family-friendly place to live.
A wise decision to settle in the US
Happy for you to have settle down.
It’s great there but the value for money doesn’t make sense to me. Maybe I’ll run the lottery someday
From Cary, make sure to try Nazara Indian restaurant next to H Mart or Anjappar across the street for their weekend lunch buffet
Wow, welcome to Cary. The first minute I saw this video when you talk about the criteria and your background, I guess this is where it is.
Welcome to Cary! Moved here from NYC 4 years ago. Love it here, great for kids and family.

Rocklin is nice! We considered it. The mosquitoes in my hometown in Minnesota are much worse than here
I’m in Roseville and there are definitely mosquitoes or similar insects, very active in the evening.
Hope you enjoy your new life there!!!!
Hello

In fact, I think Elk Grove is a very good choice, especially if there is someone in the family who works in the California government. They can live very comfortably for the rest of their lives, with good pensions, stable jobs, and plenty of free time to enjoy life.

That's awesome that NC ended up working out for you guys! I'm sure we'll be out that way sometime.
Come anytime
Welcome to Cary! I am also living in Cary. Maybe we could meet in Dayazhou or H mart or any Chinese restaurant some day in the future ! Welcome again😊
