Chris Spedding is one of the UK's most versatile session guitarists - here he talks to Terry mainly about the stories of his work with the Sex Pistols, and his hit "Motorbikin"
Great interview. Wish it was longer. Of the 3 demos that Chris did with the Pistols, I swear Chris is playing all those little riffs over what Steve was playing on No Feelings. I think that because at the time I didn't think that Steve was capable of playing like that. But if Chris says it was Steve I'll believe him. Sorta. : )
Yeah I find it hard to believe Steve was "only playing three months" before these demos were cut. Steve's own words. It's one thing to learn barre chords. It's absolutely another to get the timing changes, double-stop riffs etc. Here Chris says Jones had been playing a couple years, which is more believable. I just got a new, cheap amp and Les Paul and taught myself 4 Pistols songs I never played before, over the weekend. Here's me trying to get the Jones sound on one. ruclips.net/video/OnXQsmcsZQg/видео.html
Haha!!! What a coincidence! I said exactly the same thing yesterday, under the actual recordings. ruclips.net/video/-Wx6qJkw9Zw/видео.html Chris thought they deserved a record deal, so he helped them record the demo's. It would be in nobody's interest for him to admit that they cheated a little bit. Who was to know that the demo's would come under such close scrutiny, half a century later? The extra riffs never made it onto NMTB anyway, or the Dave Goodman-produced recordings. PS those demos sound great, IMHO- arguably better than the versions on NMTB. All four musicians, and the producer, deserve much credit, whatever the details.
That is why I could never be in a band, imagine having one song that everyone expects to hear everytime you play a gig (no matter how good it was) - that would do my head in. But, as Chris says- if you think like this you shoudnt have done it in the first place.
Nearly finished reading it excellent read especially as a guitarist myself covers a fair bit about gear techniques etc. He's a very humble guy very very highly regarded
Legend 🍷🎶

Terry is that the only shirt you got
I thought he worked with The Damned. Sure I heard a Peely session with them and him.
Would anyone recommend, or not, the book Reluctant Guitar Hero?
WHAT?
