Didn't realise you were that old mate, l think it's cool that you got so into punk when it went straight over the heads of so many of your age group.

By 74 I was getting tired of the Rock star thing. I started listening to Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield and James Brown. The record that really an impact on me was Horses by Patti Smith and the Ramones debut. I dove head first into Punk. It didn’t seem as pretentious.

I was 13 in 1970. Steppenwolf and Canned Heat were big on my playlist as well. "On The Road Again" was my introduction to the blues. I loved the epicness of Steppenwolf's Song "Monster". Saw Yellow Submarine twice the weekend it came out and listened to side one many times. Always had a love / hate relationship with the White Album becasue it was too expensive. My aunt got me the first Led Zepplin album for Christmas. Still my favortite Zep album. Finally, in the late 60's early 70's Portland Oregon has a great underground FM station KINK (still on the air today), that opened my ears to all of the artists of the day. We were so lucky to discover the world through the music of this era. Thanks Craig Danger for the refferal to Vinyl Richie.

Man, does THIS bring back great memories. I was 14 in 1969 and had EVERY ONE of these great records. We used to get together just to listen to albums (sadly, mostly guys - the girls 'n ganja came more into the picture in '70). WHAT A YEAR for music. A few other favorites from 1969: Cream 'Goodbye'; Ten Years After 'Stonedhenge'; Jeff Beck 'Beckola'; The James Gang 'Yer Album'; Santana (self-titled); The Band (self-titled); Vanilla Fudge 'Near The Beginning'; Jefferson Airplane 'Volunteers'; Pink Floyd 'Ummagumma'; Johnny Winter (self-titled); King Crimson 'In The Court of The Crimson King'; Chicago 'Chicago Transit Authority'; Moby Grape '69'; Blind Faith (self-titled); The Who 'Tommy'; MOI 'Uncle Meat'; Sly & The Family Stone 'Stand'; The Moody Blues 'To Our Children's...'; Janis Joplin 'Kosmic Blues'; Neil Young/Crazy Horse 'Everybody Knows This is Nowhere'; Grand Funk Railroad 'Grand Funk'; Joe Cocker 'With a Little Help From My Friends'; Jethro Tull 'Stand Up'; Crosby, Stills & Nash (self-titled); Bee Gees 'Odessa'; Julie Driscoll/Brian Auger & The Trinity 'Streetnoise'; Scott Walker 'Scott 4'; CCR 'Bayou Country'...and of course Rolling Stones 'Let It Bleed'. That's just the obvious stuff. Cheers Mr. Richie...

They had many, many hits, but there are great ''deep tracks'' on all of their albums. The song, ''Power Play'' from the ''Monster'' album should have been a hit. The Minutemen covered Steppenwolf's '' Hey Lawdy Mama''. The Steppenwolf version was only released as a single, it never appeared on an original studio album, just greatest hits comps.
