I’m happy that we got bigger and more athletic. We desperately needed a legit backup center who will be starting some when Lively is out. I also could see us doing some bigger lineups and having both Gafford and Lively on the court at the same time. Kyrie, Luka, PJ Washington, Gafford and Lively is a good sized lineup when we go up against some of the bigger centers in the league. Hopefully we never see Powell out on the court again and Maxi is only playing as a stretch PF instead of being asked to defend centers in the paint. Having Hardy, Exum, THJ, Green, Jone Jr, Gafford and Maxi all coming off the bench instead of starting makes me feel waay better about this team. We just need to be healthy going into the post season.

No we'll have accumulating assets as time goes on. We'll have 2 first round picks in the summer and some seconds. We still have young prospects like Hardy, Green, and O-Max, Dwight or Tim could be traded also, and Gafford and PJ aren't untouchable if the right star player appears later down the line and it takes one of them being sent off to get that player. Mavs asset wise are still in a fine place to make another move in the near future.

The “get better” slip was perfectly timed.
I asked how would everyone feel about PJ and Gafford a few days ago but I thought they would do Tim for Gaff and Green plus the 2nd’s for PJ. That woulda been an A- for me but with them giving up the first round pick I would say it’s a solid B. Now the team is unironically deep.
If a front court rotation inclusive of Lively, Gafford and Washington can make Dallas at least a top-15 defence that does a good job at rebounding, then I'll breathe easy. The other thing is we just hope and pray we stay healthy.

I honestly can't remember the last time the starting 5 for the Mavs could get a bucket, and Grant just couldn't. PJ can and we have depth in the Center position. I think we can compete with any team in the league with this trade. WCF this year if not the chip.
Dinwiddie would be an incredible value pickup: A player who is
familiar with our system
can play next to Luka
dependable 3pt shooter
proven clutch player
strong ball handler and playmaker
not a total defensive liability with his size
Luka, Kai, Dante, and Dinwiddie would be a deep 4-man rotation of ballhandlers. sign him for next season, and it becomes so much easier to trade one or more of Josh, Tim, or Jaden in the offseason without losing too much playmaking.

I picked up PJ a week ago in fantasy, anticipating this trade & now I'm the happiest SOB 😅... He will average 16p+ & 8r+ on this squad.
If the Mavs are able to get Spencer, then they going to the Ship. THJ & Green might not even be in the rotation at that point lol.
Defense should be much improved, They are a better team today and I would hope they can get Dinwiddie in the buyout market.

Depends on what moves the needle means? I don't think they are a championship team yet but, these are moves in the right direction. They got off low production players and got younger players on great contracts. Kept Hardy, OMAX, and Green which didn't seem possible so still maintain control over even more young players on good contracts. Room for growth with a young core but also competitive enough talent in those players to make noise with Luka and (a healthy) Kyrie leading the way. THJ is still around for now so that X-factor is still there but a guy like PJ can have a fringe 30 point game so we aren't as dependent on just one guy to be that third scorer anymore. Then even though we have less picks to trade we still have 2 FRPs after the draft and decent contracts to move if the right move presents itself so the idea that we aren't as flexible is wrong, having one whole extra pick wasn't going to make that much of a difference. I love the process so far even if some of it was mitigating mistakes.

I don't mind getting both PJ and Gafford, but losing 2 1st round picks to acquire is ridiculous. We gave up too much for them. If you look at other trades most trades involved a player plus 2nd round picks. Next year we would look back at this and it did not work then we fire GM.
Only one of the picks belonged to the Mavs. They got an extra pick from OKC due to a pick swap. The Mavs will still have two first round picks (and four second round picks) this summer.

I'm posting this as I'm listening, so you may already say some of this... I dont know much about PJ, so I cant really speak too much on him. However, I really like the Daniel Gafford trade. He's 25 with multiple years left on his contract. He's a very solid rim roller (currently ranked in top 20) and with Luka & Kyrie handling the ball, I feel like that will only improve. Gafford is a legit defensive paint presence as well, currently 7th in blocks (in 26mpg.) Big guys seem to have a history of injuries, so having these two both capable of starting & contributing with Dwight Powell as your 3rd string... feels a lot better than last season. On top of that, this allows Kleber to fall back to his natural back-up PF role, which we were definitely lacking size at that spot.
Your guards are arguably the best 1-2 combo in the game with Luka & Kryie. Depth behind them with Exum, Hardy, & THJ. THJ will likely be 6th man of the year. Green should start at SF as he plays solid defense. Derrick Jones Jr backs him up. PJ Washington takes Grant Williams spot with Kleber backing him up at PF. Lively & Gafford are both defensive minded centers who can rim-roll. If you rank Lively say 24th out of 30 starters, I would think Gafford is 2nd out of 30 backups. Combining 24 & 32 in rotation, esp for that price, gets the job done almost as effeciently as something like 14-45. Both of them are young with multiple years left on contracts... this roster feels pretty solid. I still think they need to trade for an elite 3 & D wing. Someone like Alex Caruso (cheaper) or Mikal Bridges (more expensive) who can knock down 3s at a high clip & actually gaurd the opposing teams best wing. Let's be real here, Kyrie & Luka arent winning all-first defensive team.
Very hyped about our new acquisitions. I think Gafford is perfect fit, i really need to see more of PJ. I really dont want another Wood case. Im sure Nico wouldn’t waste a 1st just to get a fan favorite guy.

I know a lot of contenders be able to sign him, but i would really like Danuel House Jr. or Marcus Morris. Mavs still lack wing depth size with DJJ and Green being 6.5 6.6 ft.
I would be all over if we can get them both Windidie and Morris or House jr. Just Windidie is still would be amazing.

We are more athletic and bigger. Really like these moves. I have to believe PJ will get better looks with Luka and Kyrie feeding him the pass. Gafford is a big upgrade at backup center also.

Improved now just need to see how PJ fits into starting 4 spot. Think Galford will be great as backup 5, from the few games ive see these 2 play they are professional and warriors inside. So so much of an improvement over GW & Powell. Hope both are good screen and role players for Irving and Luka. Hopefully now Luka is not the leading rebounder most nights.

Williams, Curry, Holmes, OK, I won't really miss those three. Unfortunately Grant didn't work out after a great start, the other two didn't play much anyway. I think Hardaway, Dwight, Hardy, and Maxi etc. deserved to play out the season. Probably major moves in the off-season coming, depending on the playoffs. Let's see if the two new guys can make a difference.
I tell you what, IT HAS TO HURT to be a new addition to a team that’s constantly shopping a Tim. You hear Tims name on the bloc everyday, then all of a sudden at the trade deadline it’s not Tim being traded, BUT GRANT WILLIAMS, the new defensive stopper acquisition after a half season of play. That shit has to hurt egos 😩😩

What a tremendous upgrade. Wauw Grat and seth clearly did not work but they have held their stats of before so it was always not so good. PJ and Daniel can score!! and don't do 3S but the mavs have enough 3S

I'm surprised Nico Harrison managed to make these trades happen. Daniel Gafford is a solid addition, PJ is an upgrade over Grant but maybe NOT the final piece. With Luka and Kyrie the Mavs can really be a force with the right Centers to play around them.
I like the moves but they are risky. The Christian Wood fiasco and Grant Williams dud are enough to make you anxious. I don't like giving up the picks, but we had to do something to progress in the Luka era and the sellers knew that.
