I am so happy that I saw this video, because I didn’t even think of checking that seal. I thought that it was perfect and was going to buy film, but after checking I realized that it a 3 chunks missing and it probably would’ve caused a bunch of light leaking in.
My grandfather took hundreds of pictures with one of these. Mostly of his grandchildren! I have it in a box with the flash attachment because I remember him with it on every visit. Like so many things, hard to let go of things with fond memories attached to them.
The hawkeye was using the late 620 film but can load them with 120 film, however, you need to re-spool the 120 in a 620 spool or modify the 120 spool because it's slightly taller. For development & prints, there is still labs out there which can do it for you or you can process them yourself at home with the right equipment. :-)
So how did the quick steel fix hold up after time? I have a Hawkeye with a pretty bad chip out of it and didn't want light leaks, by the way great video!
Thanks for this video! I just got my Brownie Hawkeye today. I disassembled it, gave it a thorough cleaning, and reassembled it. Quick question... A tiny "L-shaped" piece of metal came out, and I can't find any videos or manuals online to show me where it goes. It's the same material as the spring for the updates . Would you happen to know what it is for? I can send you a picture of it if you'd like. 🙏🏼
Hi Bryan - I'm working on my Hawkeye right now. Does the "L" shaped piece have a piece that goes back at the top? If so, that is the connector arm from the shutter button (grooved external button) to the gold-colored shutter arm on the shutter-plate. There will be a little notch in the shutter button that the bottom of the "L" sits in. The long end of the L will be perpendicular to the long end of the shutter button. The bottom corner of the L is what pushes down on the gold shutter arm. I hope this helps!
Well, I wouldn't be fixing one if it could not be used. A search on 120 film and 620 spools, film developing and printing may get you going. B&H, Freestyle, Adroma, sell film and developing kits.

Wow - Same Hawkeye, same cracked corner in the exact same place !! I will be trying the repair you demonstrated. Thx !

Why don't you try using it?

Can you still get film for these things? What about developing and prints?

I do not know. My guess is a part of the shutter.

Just chip the corners of the 120 spool with nail clippers :)
