  • IN 1937 BRISTOL TRAMWAYS AND BRISTOL CORPORATION SET UP BRISTOL JOINT SERVICES TO RUN BUS SERVICES IN BRISTOL. TWO NEW BUS DEPOTS AT WINTERSTOKE ROAD AND MULLER ROAD WERE BUILT TO HOUSE TRAM REPLACEMENT BUSES. WINTERSTOKE ROAD BUS DEPOT WAS OPENED IN 1939. IT WAS THEN REQUISITIONED BY THE AIR MINISTRY AS A WARTIME SHADOW FACTORY. IT REOPENED AS A BUS DEPOT IN 1946 AND WAS IN USE FOR 60 YEARS UNTIL IT WAS CLOSED AND DEMOLISHED IN 1999.

Winterstoke Road was to replace the Bedminster tram depot and Muller Road was in replacement of the Horfield tram depot. However, for a number of years after opening, both operated both BJS and BTCC (i.e. Country services) vehicles and routes.

I've been away from Bristol for meny years now and to be totally honest it breaks my heart to see how much Bristol has and is changing I'm 70 y,o, now and remember lot's of the older Bristol I even worked on the horesfair roundabout between the bus station Avon House and the shop's of Lewis's and the other shop's including Ann summer's I was working on the horsefair roundabout when the plage graves got dug up back in the very late 60's early 70's.

I totally agree Mick. So enjoyed watching this as so many memories. Im a similar age to yourself and moved away from Bristol in 74 and now live in Hampshire . I used to be proud of Bristol but it has changed so much for the worse and just think the once great city has been ruined in so many ways .... and dont start me on Colston. We do go back to visit friends and relatives a couple of times a year but just feel the city and suburbs have been dragged down and down and have an air of neglect and not at all welcoming.
