Holy fucking shit. I searched how tunnel boring machines work for fun and I had no idea how fucking complex they really are. It’s crazy that they were invented at all.
This system is being used in ontario canada 🇨🇦. Can't wait to see this machine in person. Incredible the things we can build when we put our minds together !
@@swapanbiswas5254 How did that accident happen in Bowbazar? Isn't Earth pressure balance machine supposed to counteract sinkholes by maintaining pressure?
All Chinese tbm failed in Bangalore for Bangalore metro project, but German tbm performed extraordinarily, minor glitches came but it overcome it and didn't stop and die like of Chinese one. Bangalore is in state of Karnataka which is in southern India 🇮🇳
Mind blowing engineering 🤯 and they still have people who doubt we ever been to the moon and back and what's even more crazier than that is a US submarine probably is twice the complex of engineering to build than this TBM plus All the cost we certainly can accomplish extremely great things glad to be alive to witness it all like getting to watch the starships take flight is all history in the making 👍👍
What about the earth pressure balance during cutter blade change process? Maybe it can be done at safer areas with harder soil then only and is rarely needed with soft soil. Can this drive under sandy river or lake bottom?
I work as a mechanic on one of these machines. If the ground is stable enough, you can simply open the bulkheads leading to the excavation chamber and cutterhead from behind, and do it that way. If the ground is unstable, the machine comes with man-locks (essentially a series of air locks) that allow men to enter the chamber while it is still under pressure, sort of like saturation diving.
What about making curves? Do they install some sort of curved section concrete panels and then push asymmetrically with the cylinders? Anyway thank you for the amazing video and very clear explanation!
Does anyone know how the guidance system works? How does this monster find its way in the dark? Lasers can't shine through Rock. I'm looking for a real explanation and haven't found one yet.
I work as a mechanic one one of these machines. It navigates by using a series of lasers and prisms placed at various points along the machine and in the tunnel behind it. By doing so, the machine is able to constantly be aware of it's position in 3 dimensions. The entire route of the tunnel is pre-planned, and the machine uses the lasers to compare the machines current position and trajectory, with the pre-planned route, then presents the current deviation from the route to the operator, who can steer the machine by adjusting the pressure of the hydraulic ram groups. The operator can also use a second set of cylinders to make minor adjustments to the angle of the cutter head.
For Barcelona it was necessary since they have the metro tracks stacked so they can use only one TBM. Using two of them would've caused massive disruptions in the city center.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tricks you can give me
@Brentley Ford thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.

Great video.. Thank you
Kolkata East-West Metro used TBM's from this company. Another example superb of German engineering.
Yes our company Afcons 🤟

Afcons use Herranknect S639,S640 to make howrah underwater tunnel.

I was at the aqua line in Japan.
Amazing machine, I bet it cost more than a Rolex watch.

For Our Banglore metro 9 of these machines are being used and imported ...
How do we 10x this? Very hard. Swarm robotics some day I suppose.

They use conical concrete segments that can change the angle to a more curved one

You don't need a 12 metre tunnel for metro trains. 3.5 metres to about 4 metres is fine. That means the risk of subsidence is drastically reduced.

Unclear how they inject concrete between the tunnel surface and the solid concrete panels lining the tunnel.
