it is interesting you show how you guys get out and scout ahead. It is important to show that stuff so people understand you don't just go down a river without information about what is ahead...
I've seen a ton of Stikine vids but none that put the viewer "down in it" as well as this does. Heart pounding, massive, stomping stuff. No B games allowed.
These videos always blow me away. Whitewater kayaking is one of those institutions that strikes me as one which is incredibly well-knit and communal, but an equally difficult world to break into. But then again, how does one easily "break in" to shirking the reaper?
Actually, it's all a matter of just going out there, joining a club and starting to paddle. I've been kayaking for three decades, and it never ceases to amaze me how in this paddling community, so many complete strangers, from all kinds of nations, are so friendly and accepting and easy to get along with. Sure, the more difficult the whitewater is, the more skill at both boating and rescuing is expected of you, so it will take some time to build those up, but that also gives you a chance to build a network of people to regularly go kayaking with, and progress together. Mind you, I come from one of the flatter nations in Europe, where there is no whitewater, but I still got to kayak whitewater on different continents simply by connecting with paddlers from abroad and getting invited by them to join them on their local rivers.
I've been to bike parks, ski hills and surf spots that are too busy but yet to be on a river where there was too many boaters. If it ever happens it might change the community, but for now and hopefully always it's a enthusiastic welcome anywhere I have travelled to paddle. Only limiting factor is your skillset and clubs are always there to help you learn.
You don't break into it, you just start by finding groups of people with similar aspirations as you for kayaking and stick with them. It's a long a slow haul to becoming good at kayaking, there's no cheatcode
If there's enough water, you should go for a try on the Tanzilla - the start is bone dry, but around the corner, down about 2km from the road there is a big falls (60ft?) into a slot canyon, and then the river gets big all the way to Tanzilla falls at the slot. (I bailed at the big falls)
When the video opens with a "WOOOOO, LETS GO!" in the first five seconds, you know its going to be good. I love the humor throughout, "Nice wood! Thank you for noticing!". Its also really cool how you get into the landscape of the river bed and how the different features are formed. The part in the landslide section was actually really informative and cool to understand the dynamic nature of the canyon. Is that a bunch of shales and slates in there? Also, that slot below Tanzilla is crazy!
Thanks Dane - I know its a cliche but you kinda made it look easy - your immense skill set shows in this first lap which enabled you to be so chilled. Looking forward to second lap.
I was wondering when you were gonna get around to paddling the Stikine. Awesome to finally see you get to do it! Also really appreciate you including all the scouting footage, and clips between the major rapids that usually get edited out in most other Stikine videos. Also made me chuckle how one of the first things you said when scouting Site Zed was "I remember that clip of Ferraro slamming into that rock!" Also never knew that Aniol swam at Pass or Fail, talk about a dangerous swim... Great video as always Dane!
Dude great content! This reminds me of the Evan Garcia days when GoPro's started getting really good and it allowed us viewers to feel like we're in there with ya! Lol
That looks awesome, but some of those more intimidating rapids I wouldn't paddle for any kind of money! Glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to the next lap!
Headed down to the gauley river Thursday, I know that’s not this xD but I always get a thrill watching you! And the gauley is the only river experience I know haha!
Whitewater kayak camping question. Can I tow a creekkooler with food and gear? Short rope. Possible? Not trying to win a race. I want to do the whole river rapids at the same trip. Not sections. Camp out. I want to start in grand lake Colorado and finish maybe in yuma Arizona. What do you think? Im considering buying a jackson nirvana large
Man, I ride motorcycles. Way faster than I should. Snowboard places I probably shouldn't. But this... you couldn't pay me enough to do this. Big water like this is absolutely terrifying to me.
Serious question, what do you guys do if you lose your paddle on a big river like this? Pack a backup? I've lost paddles in rivers that just... dissapeared instantly😅 I'm no professional. Barely even an amateur. But on a huge trip like this in the middle of nowhere.. do you guys have a contingency? Spare paddle broken down in the kayak or something?
The video started with him packing a spare paddle (broken down) which is the first video I've seem that. Breaking or losing a paddle on that river would have major consequences. Epic video. Way beyond what I ever could do. The Gauley is about it for me back in the day.
13:26 I physically clinched at that sight.
agree. I could be wrong, but I imagine that thing would probably kill 90% of all kayakers in the world

I have nothing but deep respect for Dane Jackson and his ilk. They are in a class unknown to many.
There are few people on the planet who could paddle thee Stikine trips in one week, including a one day trip. Super human
great footage and a great stout run, this river and the Zambezi are two of my favorites to watch kayakers show their skills, thanks for sharing!
Brings b😢ack memories of doing big water in the Wrangell mtns. With my old buddy Brian Teale back in the day. Miss you Brian.
Sick!! I get nervous before a class 3!! Lol
Wow. You better have it together before getting on a river with these extreme class rapids. Awesome upload. I loved it.

Find a local club if you have any. They will help you get into it.

@@roshaw87 try the upper yough during yough week or even the Gauley during peak weekends

Funny, my Class III "whitewater" videos don't have that ominous "hissing" background noise that Dane's always have.
The best Stickine video I've seen! Pure content, no random music over everything. Bang on perfect!
Appreciate it!

That view at 19:20 going into the canyon is terrifying.
8:14 them boils damn
I enjoyed this video more than all others combined.

Stoked to see you and Benny ripping it up, can't wait for the Skook vid to drop 🤘

8:48 had some nice hangtime! Such an epic river!
13:45 looked pretty wicked. You know it's scary when the helmet mounted gopro is an extended white out.
Dude great content! This reminds me of the Evan Garcia days when GoPro's started getting really good and it allowed us viewers to feel like we're in there with ya! Lol
As epic as always. I wish I had gotten on the river in my younger days. It looks amazing.
this is about 12.8 levels above anything I could ever imagine tckling on my best day ever.
I’ve been waiting for this one for soooo long! That is some of the sickest kayaking to ever exist on gopro
Can't wait to see the gnarvana on the zambesi. stoked to see you rippin it up on the stikine i've been waiting forever to see that
That looks awesome, but some of those more intimidating rapids I wouldn't paddle for any kind of money!
Glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to the next lap!
Glad you had a great time! I live in Wrangell at the mouth of the Stikine.
That’s awesome! Can’t wait to get back up there.
Wowza haha 😄 so many times found myself laughing watching the guys pop out of the water down stream launching off waves. Looked HUGE and epic.
Headed down to the gauley river Thursday, I know that’s not this xD but I always get a thrill watching you! And the gauley is the only river experience I know haha!
Still a dope run!
Have fun!

Never seen a Zane video without a kick flip.
That's how I felt when I got to the bottom.. Was enjoying the launches too much

What'd you think of the Hole That Ate Chicago?
Jesus. Seeing YOU get accidently surfed in a hole is scary...
Does anyone raft this?
Drone overhead while doing this would be just awesome.
Dane - anyone ever tell you you look like Bradley Cooper?
Super juicy
That was insane! Are you using the Garmin Fenix 7?
It looks like a Coros Vertix to me. 🔋🔋
Vertix 2
I heared the word "stoked" way to often in this video and in the last years on all ww videos.
I'm trying to think of something else negative to say about the amazing adventures these guys share with us.. it's hard to, though
Helmet cam video sucks.
