I have two Echo Flex and love them. One in the kitchen and One in the bathroom so I can listen to news or music while getting dressed. It is also a safety item for seniors in the bathroom for possible slips or falls. You can call for help if you can’t get up .

Interesting point on the bathroom. It’s moot in North America, we don’t have those restrictions on sinks. You can’t put a plug in the shower, but you’re totally fine to put it beside your sink. It doesn’t have to be two prong, it can be a standard voltage/amperage, as long as it’s a gfci.
I have several to act as an intercom. I plan on getting Bluetooth speakers for any rooms that actually needs to play music. I didn’t know about the pir though: definitely going to look into that!

I love mine .I put it in the bedroom and use it as an alarm and for reminders. The music is equal in sound to a clock radio for the bedroom. I can also turn on lights in the house as well as my echo in the kitchen .It works wonderful

I will be using one of these to optimise my newly built wardrobe when I set it up with motion sensor it will upon opening my sliding wardrobe door, switch on the lights inside, turn on the bedside and possibly main room lights and start the dehumidifier, it will start the air fresheners both of which will be on timers and hopefully eventually raise the blind, of course it will power an older Bluetooth speaker and play my morning playlist. It will take me a while to sort this, but surely like you say if you use it with intelligent programming it can be a huge positive! Fabulous come back Stu, and IMO one of your best reviews👍🏻

Most shaver plugs are only built for short term use, for shaving. You actually have to get a specific type with a different logo on the front if you want to plug something in 24/7. A regular one will overheat and is a fire hazard. Hence why it’s not got a shaver plug on the back. Continuous rated versions also have a toothbrush logo next to the shaver logo and even if your using a rechargeable shaver you technically should have one of these continuous rated sockets.....we don’t often see them because of price.

I wish the 3.5mm coming out of it had a mini toslink optical combi to connect to a DAC or AV reciver, then it could be an audiophiles dream, but atleast it has blutooth for a hifi or better speaker. If you are not satisfied with the 3.5mm sound out or using a 3.5mm to RCA, you can buy a butooth receiver that has optical and digital coaxial out to conect to your own DAC, and then your hifi. You could pair to blutooth headphones. If you want better sounding alexa in your bathroom, consider an echo dot, powered up by a usb step up 5V-12V convereter, which can come with diffrent dimension DC barrel plugs, the slim one reqired for the dot, enabling to power echo dot with a usb out power bank. This makes it portable.

Hi Stu, Great review on the Echo Flex, I have Echo Show in my Lounge and in my bedroom, Plus I also have Echo Dots in my Kitchen and my son’s bedroom, but there was a few places in my home that doesn’t have Alexa which is the Hallway and Landing and Bathroom.....I think it is brilliant how you can buy the Attachments like the Motion Sensor and Night Light! I shall be ordering 2 of these Echo Flex, a Motion Sensor and Night Light! I have Smart Bulbs all through out my home, and a Ring Doorbell Pro Doorbell, This will almost bridge the gaps in my Smart Home, once I figure out how to get a Echo Flex into my Bathroom as I only have a Shaving Socket built into the Light above the Mirror, and need to work out how to have one in there?

Cheers Stu. I got one just before Xmas as a replacement night light to illuminate the landing. I think that Paul suggests a great improvement to it (like yours about making a shaver socket compatible one) and that’s to make a smart plug version. Now THAT would be interesting. Have two usb slots (one on top and one on the bottom for best line of sight) for a motion sensor and it could be a real winner!

The Flex is available on amazon.fr and this has a 2 pin plug which will fit a bathroom shaver socket. This is, however, not necessary in France as 3 pin sockets are allowed in bathrooms subject to complying with less rigorous regulations concerning distance from a bath.
I don't want to cast doubt on Steve Page's statement about shaver sockets overheating and technically he is probably correct but I have left shavers and toothbrushes plugged in for days and not noticed a problem. One thing would put me off though, although mine could be faulty and that is the continuous buzzing noise when anything is plugged in.

  • @jamesdewitt84

I think the main thing to realise is that the Flex shouldn't be anyone's first echo. But if you already have a lot of echos and find that in one place in the house you are always having to shout, alexa mishears you or you have a dot in an awkward place you could get a flex!
Also for the input, this is quite niche but it is for people who are creating an alexa echosystem but also already have a pretty good sound system in at least one room they are quite attached to. You still want to be able to hear music coming out of that but dont need a full echo. INPUT!
Both of these are for people already sold on the Alexa infrastructure and are looking to push it into other areas of their homes that it does not comfortably fit into right now.

I watched yours and Paul's review on the Echo flex, way back when. I hadn't seen much from either of you at the time. I decided you were wrong and Paul was right. I keep following Paul's channel and stopped watching yours. However after watching this maybe I was wrong to dismiss you so quickly. Its a hard thing to admit you're wrong. it's a very good technical solution, but yeah, the quality of the speaker continues to be its Achilles' heel.

Long before Paul posted his review, there was me screaming at the screen (and in your comment section) in shock that you didn’t see the same advantages that I did. But at least now you’ve given it a better look. In honor of that, here are further advantages, now that I actually own one.
    1. The softness of the speakers now allow my wife to set an alarm in the bathroom without waking me up on the loud 3rd generation dot in our living room.
    2. Can have my webcore routines, through Echo Speaks and Bigtalker, announce to the stepkids to stay out of my bathroom drawer so they don’t try to do gross things like share hairbrushes and stuff.
3.Can ask the time or shut off lights in other rooms without sticking my head out of the bathroom.
That’s just a few things, but it’s a great device. It’s good to have an echo tailored to each situation. Sometimes the goal isn’t to have the best sound and have your kids always wanting to use it and abuse it. Sometimes it’s just to have accessibility without unnecessary attention being drawn to it.

Yeah, when all the new Amazon devices were released last year, Studio was clearly the optimum speaker, and Flex was the optimum cheap interface. Just a way to instruct her in less glamorous environments. Flex killed the Input, just as three different Shows killed the Spot. Which makes it a bit crap that they reduced the Input and Spot just before, apparently to get rid of the remaining stock that would soon be obsolete.

    • @erinescence2095

Amazon's bizarrely got a new device that is named "Echo Input" that is currently only being sold in India. It's essentially a battery powered Echo Dot. I had wondered why they would choose that name when it was already in use by another device, not realizing the original Echo Input had been discontinued.

Dont pay too much attention to 'HIBBERT HOME TECH' i have watched videos on his channel and they are terrible, your channel is far superior and professional. HIBBERT HOME TECH need to stop putting annoying meme's, popups in their videos and all the childish sound effects.
