- I began my rebuild when I did a compression test and noticed I had poor compression in cylinders 2-6 (about 142 psi, the bottom of the service limit). Cylinder 1 head 160 psi. A leakdown test showed leakage into each adjacent cylinder. Of course my engine also had the oil consumption problem (1 quart every 1000 miles) that every M54 engine has, which is caused by the oil rings which wear down prematurely (the M52TU used different oil rings which did not have this problem). There was also coolant loss, which I didn't measure precisely.

I decided to remove the front bumper to make it easier to remove the engine, rather than removing the hood and or propping the hood up in a higher position with a special service tool that is impossible to find.
It's necessary to drain the refrigerant from the A/C system if you want to do it this way. Make sure you have the refrigerant recovered and recycled by a professional shop. I plan to replace the dryer and the expansion valve during reinstallation.

You sir, are a BMW god! I'm referencing this exact video for my S54 motor pull on my 2004 E46 M3!! Engine is different, but similar enough in most parts of your video that, this has become the MAIN guide I'm using to getting the full engine pull job done!! I LOVE that you went with moving the engine forward slightly to get the top tranny bolts... I REFUSE to use 10,000 extensions to get to these with the tranny tilted, that is absolutely ridiculous! Anyway, THANK YOU sincerely from the corn state of IA; you're helping me avoid a $10,000 job at the BMW stealership! ;) XD

Hi 50skid! FYI - It is possible to support the AC condenser from a high point (out of the way) with a bungee cord saving you the cost of recharging the AC system. The AC hoses are flexible even though they are shrouded in aluminum protective covering.

The front lifting eye actually is on the M54. it sits around the intake vanos solenoid, but since you already removed the head it isn't there anymore.

Yes I know but there is an additional eye on the timing cover as well. At least, on the m52tu there is.

+50skid, you tha man! You should do a quick vid on how you stay organized through a project like this ... when I "set everything to the side" I sometimes can't find my way back! Maybe as part of the common repair steps etc. keep up the great work!
Thanks. Early on in the project (probably the first video), I pointed out that I was bagging each group of bolts and labeling the bags. I've got a box of ziploc baggies with all the bolts in them. The parts themselves are just sitting on shelves. Really helps to have some storage area, that's for sure.

Thanks, nice video. Suggestion on the hood latch, leaving it connected on the front latch but follow the cable towards the top of the drivers side fender where it connects inside a plastic junction box. There you can easily disconnect it without having to mess with the connection at the latch receptacle on front support.
Ya know I saw that and the thought crossed through my head like why is there a little box there? Of course that thought slipped out of my head just as fast! Oh well.

Great videos man. My 330 has 220k and I can see milk in the expansion tank so I take it my head gasket has blown and I'm about to pull it apart, I was a little worried about it at first but your series has helped me learn what I need to do. Great videos man
Hardest part is the exhaust manifold, man. The rest is pretty easy. I do recommend having the head resurfaced at a machine shop at the absolute minimum (which should be $45-$55) to prevent it from happening again. Or have them do a complete clean, pressure test, and valve job as well (I just paid roughly $550 for the head work I had done). Be aware that your head may have cracked just like mine did and you might have to get a new one to actually solve the problem. Another reason to send it to the machine shop.
Alright man will do. I have a guy down the street that can do it. Weird thing is that the car drives great still. It doesn't overheat or leak fluid at all. Only thing wrong is the milky fluid in radiator lol.
Jordan harle same here, but I don't even have milky fluid in the radiator, y have coolant in the oil only, and of course, it consumes coolant

My engine just blew and i have a 330ci as well. How come you are not rebuilding the engine from the car, was it too bad?
ninjadude2000 i just opened the top end of mine to do a head gasket change, and rebuilt the head. It may hold t may not. I got the other block for $120 from a guy who just wanted it out of his Garage. My plan is to hopefully hone the sleeves, new rings, new bearings, oil pump water pump and maybe raceware studs in lieu of the TTY bolts. I still want to cruise around in the car while I get the new engine done. Might also rebuild the transmission as well, Jason has some great information on DYI rebuild.
Cool. Going to tear down the engine at some point and see where it failed. Hopefully just a matter of replacing the broken parts and doing a rebuild as well. Good luck on your build!

Wish I was there at 16:57 , all it takes a minute to undo the cable , it's actually 2 pieces and the connector it's by the left fender.
I know--it wouldn't come out for some reason--the little catch on one side was bent or something. I got tired of messing with it.
I have always wondered if the block warps hanging on the stand and it affects the head bolt torques.
It is a very long engine.
One more thing, you do not have to remove headlights and you can simplly twist whole light assemblies out without unplugging.
Thanks for all your great video's. It's been a godsend for me. I took my 2001 330 M54 out through the front as you showed. Now to put it back in can I put the intake manifold, alternator and ac compressor on before shoe horning it back in or is it better to get the engine in and located on it's mounts before installing those items. Obviously easier to put them on outside the engine bay but does that make the engine install too difficult? Thanks so much for your advise. Gary

Thanks. I just cranked them too tight. Not possible to torque them from underneath with the long extensions.

Honestly you can probably get away with leaving the block as is. Most people who do head gaskets don't pull the block to have it resurfaced. There is a certain amount of squeeze present at the different points of the head to gasket to block mating surface.
*TIMING CHAIN GUIDE QUESTION*
So I’m doing a head gasket replacement. The timing chain guide somehow broke, and there no tutorials on how to replace it without the engine already removed. I can see clearly here at this moment with the bumper and brackets off. It looks like the timing cover is totally exposed. At 25:00 does anyone know if it is possible or @50sKid do you know if I can remove those 4 oil pan bolts and remove the timing cover here to replace my timing chain guide?
The two hoses at 8:30, what are those? Noob question but mine need replaced😅 and I’m not sure what they really are!

I thought that after I posted it. Ya learn somethin' new! May have missed it but why'd you start the rebuild.. Something to do with coolant in the cylinders??
I really should mention why in the intro to these videos but most of them were filmed before people started asking. Rebuild is due to somewhat low compression and oil consumption. 175k miles.
50sKid mines on 160, 325. has the oil consumption but dunno about the compression. hoping rear main seal will sort the oil. no chance I'll diy that though so $$$$ 😂

I will be removing the M54 engine from my 2005 320i. What's the best way? Remove the front end bodywork and pull the engine and trans or split the two, and leave the trans in the car? Or, drop the trans then pull the engine? I"d prefer to pull the complete engine as a unit, rather than reduce it to a short block in the car.
or remove the hood and then the engine and trans. Up to you really whatever sounds like less work. Definitely easier to pull engine and trans together if you can.

What are you gonna do about the transmission, the automatics don't usually last as long as the manuals.
