This came perfectly for me, I recently started listening to Envy again and I love their style, hopelessness combined with world ending melodies. It’s just beautiful!

Envy is great, pretty much the quintessential Japanese screamo band with a heavy post-rock influence. Blackened screamo is definitely worth checking out, bands like Celeste, Portrayal of Guilt, and We Came Out Like Tigers, but it's definitely a small genre.

Screamo and black metal are a very natural pairing IMO, the guitars and vocals tend to take on similar textures, even the drumming can reach a similar feel when screamo gets fast and heavy. I like that you picked up on the parallels, even though this song doesn't have any distinctly black metal elements.

Really should have listened to the follow up song as well. They kind of belong together since it builds up to it.

Excellent band. And since you mentioned this the other day, another singer that uses lyrics sheets for the live performances.

Oh wow Envy, I was jamming hard to this on my 1st generation Ipod around 2004. They were a gateway band for me from emo/screamo into full blown metal. Their bright Fender sound on the guitars was pretty unique for me to hear at the time in such heavy music but his vocal delivery is the same in album after album and it gets old fast.

One of my favorite bands, and I've request this exact song a few times in the comments :D Never thought you would do it tho eheh, nice surprise.
The ending is a bit abrupt but if you're listening to the album it goes straight into the next song.

By 'Monotonous and Dreary' I was expecting so much less... The song was patient and dynamic. The growth in sections were excellent. I certainly agree with the singing being monotonous, but wouldn't have used that as a term for the song itself, although perhaps we have different views on that. That said, I don't like the harsh vocals one bit.

Thinking back I might have undersold this a little bit. Or it might be that my thoughts on it today are different from that day. But I agree, I don't think I'd use that description if I made the thumbnail right now.

@@CriticalReactions interesting how our perceptions of music can change even from one day to the next. Sometimes mood and energy dependent.

Not super into the post-hardcore sections, but I dug the moodier post-rock sections. It's definitely too repetitive and ultimately doesn't feel like it goes anywhere meaningful. Pretty meh for me overall.

Maybe you'd like their latest album more (from 2020). Their earlier stuff (this album is from 2003) is a bit more repetitive for sure.
If you aren't into screaming at all, their track "Swaying Leaves and Scattering Breath" has no screaming. Or if you think screaming is nice when done right: "Dawn and Gaze" :) I hope you'd like those more, if you check them out.
