  • The highlight of this show is the very funny bit with the uncooperative mynah bird, Raffles, starting around 13:00.
    When Groucho mentions a "Gonzalez Gonzalez" at 9:53, he's referring to one of the all time great YBYL contestants, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez.
    COUPLE #1: Constance Watt / Pat DeLeon
    COUPLE #2: Zetta Wells, who brings her trained (but uncooperative) mynah bird along / Arthur Morales, pastry chef

    All great comedians really love people and just having a great time with them! You can tell this was like a little kid at playtime for Groucho!
    Besides being really funny , Groucho could never hide his love of people! You are one of the greats and you are loved and missed some 50 years after your passing!

    That was my uncle "Pat" Pasquale. The show was rehearsed before it went live. Pat cracked jokes & got laughs during rehearsal which Groucho didn't appreciate. Groucho met hm in the bathroom & said they came to see me not you. When they went live Pat was respectful but still got his quips in. They brought Pat back a second time over Groucho's objection because they said he was good for ratings. He came to visit me on Long Island when he was 80 we went into NYC & he still had strangers laughing! A family treasure to us RIP uncle "Pat".

      +Joseph Marchionda I don't doubt that this is how the story was related to you by your uncle, and I hope that you won't get offended when I point this out, but the story isn't at all possible. YBYL was never a live show, and it was never pre-rehearsed. There WAS a great deal of preparation done before the shows-- there were actually writers who provided scripted material for Groucho to fall back on. But Groucho made a special point of never meeting the contestants before the show. He felt it killed the spontaneity of the interviews. I'd also add that one of Groucho's strengths on YBYL was that he was always content to let the contestants take center stage and get the laughs if the audience was responding, unlike his generally aggressive persona when he was on anyone **else's** programs. :)
      Last thing is, there's no record of your uncle appearing on the show again according to the producer's own episode notes.
      But again, I hope you don't take offense-- I'm always delighted to get comments from relatives of contestants. I just think your uncle was pretty definitely mistaken in his memory about the show.

    • @CamhiRichard
      @CamhiRichard 6 лет назад +6

      Maybe I can reconcile the two versions: could be that the "rehearsal" was actually the interview with the staff writers, who may have noted Pat trying too hard to be funny, and they may have told him so. The rest fits with my own uncle's guiding principle: "Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story."

    • @TruckTaxiMoveIt
      @TruckTaxiMoveIt 6 лет назад +1

      Bigfoot Mangiacavallo ... " never let the truth stand in the way of a good story" I like that a whole lot as long as after the story is told you remember that the truth is more important then a lingering lie, which is why the phrase "just kidding" became so popular.

      I'm not sure "lobbyists" were as well known in the 1950's.
      Having watched dozens of episodes now, I notice there are some really sharp individuals that seem better read and more worldly than most these days but that the average person is much less ... cosmopolitan? No offense to your uncle at all though - different times.

    Here is the resolution of the discrepancy once and for all!
    #57-05 10-24-1957 (secret word street - CORRECT AS IS)
    #57-06 10-31-1957 (not here in this collection or in my own)
    #57-07 11-07-1957 (not here in this collection or in my own)
    #57-08 11-14-1957 (not here in this collection or in my own)
    #57-09 11-21-1957 (not here in this collection or in my own)
    #57-10 11-28-1957 (secret word chair - with the myna bird)
    #57-11 12-05-1957 (secret word room - first episode of the rock and roll debate)
    #57-12 12-12-1957 (secret word grass - 2nd ep of the rock and roll debate)
    #57-13 12-19-1957 (from the shout! factory dvd)
    #57-14 12-26-1957 (secret word water - CORRECT AS IS)
    From my guess, the Shout! Factory people used the very same log for their DVD sets you did for your uploads and couldn't resolve the discrepancy either. The log here is just numbered wrong. Plain and simple. The error in the log could be explained as simply as they forgot to get a release form signed (even back then you had to sign a waiver for your likeness to be used on TV) and had to hold the episode a couple weeks. Just a supposition. But yes, the log here MUST be wrong because what I've posted is the ONLY way this can be resolved WITHOUT renumbering the entire season!
    The log is slightly disordered here because this isn't an issue of incorrect air dates, it is an issue of mistaken numbering. The air dates are all correct. Standard season numbering is based on air dates NOT production numbers (they just normally coincide in the production of a weekly, non-dramatic broadcast). The log is based on production numbers NOT air dates. These were filmed out of order in this one case.
    Dates AND numbering this way checks out with all the other episodes in the season!
    I'm 99.999% sure this is the correct order now, and anything other than this requires changing info on the whole season. The log is so accurate otherwise, it is just an issue of production vs airing.
    Also, #57-10, for example, is a standard production number still sometimes used in this format even today (a current season production number would be written something like #A14-32 [filmed 32nd in preparation for the 2014-2015 season]).
    Seasonal numbering to show that, though, is based upon air dates. So technically, #57-10 should be written as 0810 (Season 8 Episode 10). Production numbers can and do drift from seasonal numbers (South Park is a good, more recent example of this). Once again, not nitpicking this point just giving as much info as I can to show you how I managed to unravel this Gordian knot.
    Production numbers were originally invented to internally refer to reels of footage in editing. Normally, they are ignored once a season begins broadcast. Seasonal numbering is also known as broadcast history or chronological progression.
    The preempted episode might only have ever made it on the radio as well. If so, there will always be an episode that aired and was never seen on TV due to the preempt...
    "We now take you back to your regularly scheduled program ALREADY IN PROGRESS...."
    spent all night on fixing this =^.~= you are welcome everyone

      You guys need to go to the end of the broadcast. It seems instead this episode aired in September 1954:
      The Desoto ad at the end is for a '54 Plymouth, and at the 23:15 mark, George the announcer says that "September is child safety month."
      Perhaps the network aired a repeat during the last week of November, but but it seems evident the original air date is way out of sync with the rest. =)

  • @jimmiedee2315
    @jimmiedee2315 10 лет назад +2

    Assuming the date is correct, I suspect the actual episode number is 57-08 or Season 8, Episode 8. I have a partial Library of Congress log which contains the same info that you've attached to this video, but I've found a few errors in the log. I'm afraid this may be another one. I haven't viewed the show, yet. Perhaps, whenever I do, it will provide a clue.

    • @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  10 лет назад

      Well, we've talked about this earlier with respect to a different show-- the info on all these shows comes from a very reliable log based on Bernie Smith's own program notes. I can't vouch that all the info is 100% correct, but I have no basis for questioning the info in this instance and it is an accurate reflection of what's in the log. Remember that there were minor variations in program numbers and air dates, and the order of broadcasts for radio and TV was sometimes different.

    • @jimmiedee2315
      @jimmiedee2315 10 лет назад

      What is confusing to me is that (according to the log) Episode 57-12 falls chronologically prior to Episodes 57-09, 57-10, and 57-11. Also confusing to me is that 57-10 is only two weeks prior to 57-14. I'm not saying that I think you've made a mistake - I just have a problem understanding the chronology of it all.

    • @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  10 лет назад +1

      Jimmie Dee I'm with you, I don't get the chronology either. And I appreciate corrections, I'm never bothered by people pointing out errors. It just happens to be the case here that if there's an error, it's in the log, not an error I introduced.

      Those were innocent times! Nobody in the general public knew about lobbyists until much, much later. That's why the question could be asked as a quiz. Furthermore, the laws were much stricter about what lobbyists could and could not do to win votes, not like the legal bribery with no holds barred we see today.
