The mutated plant reminds me of something from Serious Sam. Worms coming out the walls of a tunnel, spitting poisonous slime. At least they were stationary. The sniper is more creepy, but the mutated plant is fearsome.
I'm gonna agree. Both are VERY dangerous, but the Matango is easier to dodge and doesn't give off the Uncanny Valley effect in waves. Laughing Toms are plain and simply disturbing, even without the implications of them being scavs.
There's an added bit about Laughing Toms that makes them worse: if you get out of sight for too long, they're gonna sneak around and hit you from the flank. In terms of game engine mechanics, they literally silent-teleport behind you. Talk about an oppressive goit of a mutant. Also don't get into melee range. They can swing the musket in your face, and it hurts. _Badly._
Kudos to "Vos" for the design of the Mutant Scavs. Their laughter sent shivers down my spine. It's amazing how exciting a game can be even without having a "next gen" graphics. It is the power of ideas.
My favorite enemy in this game. I think they gain a lot from that scripted introduction, as it makes them seem sneakier and craftier then they actually are (probably). My first encounter felt like a death match against a human player.

Oh, and there's one reference you kinda missed in the last video: talking to Kyle about the town's chronic crop failures allows you to ask if they've tried rotating their crops (a reference to Fallout 1). Kyle yells at you for assuming they didn't understand basic farming. LOL! So very weird while exploring what's the aftermath of the Cold War. Anyways, nice vid! :)
Oh wow, I can't believe I never noticed that before! Granted it goes from yellow to orange, which isn't the starkest contrast out there, which is likely why I never noticed it :P Good catch!
I wonder if the Laughing Toms were inspired by the Monolith faction from the STALKER games. That thing at 15:32 looks like a reference to the Wish Granter from the same game, which is also located in a nuclear power plant. My understanding of cyrillic isn't the best, but I'm sure it says "STALKER" in cyrillic on the wall at 15:13
Playing the arcade I don't get rocketlauncher when I drive over them. They disappear, but don't appear on the screen and pressing spacebar does nothing but slows me down. I have to actually drive beside the car and shoot it with my shotgun or just smash it. I won the game this way.
Nope, from terminal messages in the final level, it was December of 1989. One of the old world messages dated 17/12 states that D.C. and New York are totally unreachable. Most probably Athena had hit that spot already.
for the recessed secret switch, i pushed a rolling chair in form the nearby room and used it to boost into the alcove. trying to jump from the boxes was just not happening for me.
@@mateo_flatula I couldn't see any difference from my attempts before with the traditional method, but that's how I made it - not using the chair. It's almost like the program said, "He's tried enough let's give it to him.".
Oh that crash happens everytime so it is part of the game. Goddam epic :D.. but now i have a another problem. When i press space for somereason the biker character turns in to pit fiendriding scav. Is my version of game broken or is it part of this minigame too :D?
@@Chozo_Ghost It turned out that you can also kill that minigame boss with shotgun. I could not use the rockets because of that character changing from spacebutton so i tried to kill it with gun and it worked :D
Laughing Toms got crazy trying to reach that damned alcove switch! Goddamit, I can't fit into that alcove regardless of pressing crouch button! How do you make a crouch jump? UPD: okay, I made it. The trick was in releasing the jump button before hitting the crouch button.
I was not ready for the snipers taking pot-shots at me and it scared the crap out of me. I had remembered reading on the mod page that there was any enemy called Laughing Tom but it didnt include a pic, so my mind was just going crazy with every dark corner i went around until they finally ambushed me. I was not expecting Ashes to scare me as much as it did
The Spire, the Array, this place, the Biodome and A210 give me the jitters even in repeat playthroughs. Especially the Dome is perfect for unscripted jumpscares.
@@DinnerForkTongue the walking tree jump scared me. It had walked back into a dark building I had entered the courtyard from and I went back in lookin for supplies near the end of the level. The dang thing came running out of the darkness at me right after i stepped in
@@michaelkidd8746 Oh man, the Loping Longhair! 🤣 That little one is a classic, and yep, it has startled me good even in repeat playthroughs when it manages to run into the dark corridors. Still not as big as my latest jumpscare, though. I was done with the main Dome and in the offices, and a Manslayer's shotgun blast scared the BEJEEZUS out of me. I walked past a corner and didn't even register him and his buddy waaaay back in the corridor.
ruclips.net/video/1DGsRe-APgg/видео.html Right here two pipebombs conveniently placed near the entrance and a bit beyond do the trick nicely. Deliciousness. Hitting him from the bridge is indeed really difficult.
The 2nd secret switch is impossible for mobile player since you cannot do 3 action on the same time while this jump require jumping and crouching and moving at the same time

I find the snipers in this level far more creepy then the mutated plant.

Yeah, they are amazingly creepy. Their laughter, and especially how they keep approaching you on all fours while laughing maniacally.
@@dvdv7777 yes, that's a crazy moment.
15:35 the creepy "cryo chamber" looking thing I believe is the reactor core.
No, its the Wish Granter/the Monolith from S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl

Regarding too many medkits: in both hubs, surplus medkits can be sold to the respective doctor.
32:00 There's a glitch here: playing the arcade has a side effect of switching the power plant's skybox for the one used in the arcade.

I thought the Laughing Toms were driven mad by that Background Despair stuff?
they are
There are Haunts in the gatehouse. That should tell you everything you need to know.

I've heard about that as well, and I do believe that is actually what it's referencing!

Same for me in v1.15. Wasn't that bad after I learned how to play and move.
Some of the references in this game are hilarious. Matango? I think the creators have seen Attack Of The Mushroom People aka Matango.
I believe it's 87. In Ashes I believe that's when the war happened. Alternative Cold War outcome. Pretty cool concept.
Can't be. The computer system in the old mountain tower shows intersystem emails dated as late as December 1989.

Sure He is!

There is a chair nextdoor.
God seeing him not sell some of the medkits to make space for more makes me sad. You can get enough for 1 upgrade per medkit if you sell them.
