I inherited my 311 from my Dad. It's in the often overlooked 16ga and has the same choke configuration as your 12ga. It's a superb bird and small game shotgun that will also take deer when buckshot or slugs are utilized.
@@matttyreeoutdoorsI normally hunt with a 12ga pump shotgun, but I've really come to appreciate Dad's old side by side. The biggest problem I have had with the 16ga is finding good quality hunting rounds. If I was a skeet shooter, I'd be drowning in 16ga shells if that tells you anything. Basically, within certain limitations, I've found the 16ga to be capable of anything the 20ga can do but there are times when the somewhat longer range of the 20ga comes in handy.
I truly am surprised by the pattern on both berrels. Haven’t played with any salt creek shells but am looking forward to trying out the triple threat shells. Keep putting out the videos and I’ll keep watching. Nice work.
Tyler I wonder if it patterns low with lead. If so a shorter bead up front might change that . I used to have one in 410 , sold all my guns to go to technical trade school. but the good news is I have many many good ones now. Thankyou left to right patterns were very uniform You have a keeper there.
From the two test shots I fired with some cheap lead 7.5s before filming, it seems to hit pretty much in the same spot. It definitely seems to be a pretty decent performer though
You did good hitting the paper...if you haven't shot that gun in years and years you would have zero idea exactly where the gun patterns, and double barrels are notorious for the barrels not being in perfect alignment...of course there are some guns that are in alignment, and yours did good...
That's why I did take a practice shot from each barrel before filming to try and get it centered reasonably well since I had never fired it before. Before that though, it's been at least 25 years since it had been taken out. Probably more like 30 to 35 if I had to guess
@@matttyreeoutdoors thoes 311 are what we ol$ folks called a working man’s gun. Not too expensive ( usually about 1 weeks pay ) and if a bit of TLC was applied when the hunt was over or the season they would last and operate for a very long time, very long time. Mine were used hard and still operate great.👍✌🏻🇺🇸😎🙏🏽
@@matttyreeoutdoors oh, by the way , talk about combinations of chokes and loads. Sixes in one pocket fours in another pocket with the 311 in modified / full chokes . Awesome !
I don't know if we will run any steel through this setup, but I'm sure we will test some throughout this fall and winter. We have a whole playlist with a bunch of steel tests we've done over the last year or so if you wanted to check it out!
I don't think they have any low pressure 16ga stuff available as a standard option, but if you are looking for something specific like that, you should contact them and see what they can do. I know they can load custom stuff, and their customer service is great, so they might be able to make something up for you
What a great video, but having grown up on Winchester Model 21's, I am definitely biased towards the S x S platform....with a growing bias towards Salt Creek ammo. A Marlin Model 90, a Stevens Model 311H, probably some more break-action's in there which we viewers would like to see. Those 2-1/2" low pressure, " vintage " rounds are in no way " nostalgic, but obsolete" because 1-1/8 ounce of, say, Bismuth, in #2-4-5-6 birdshot, moving along at an HONEST ~1300 fps, at only 6100 PSI in the chamber, is nothing to laugh about. Thanks again.
They are sweet old guns
Yeah, it definitely seems to be a pretty decent performer

I've never messed with anything in 16ga, but that's something I'd like to get into at some point hopefully sooner rather than later

I am a big fan of SxS shotguns, i have 2 myself. Its an old school set up that brings a smile when used.
Yep, I definitely don't mind using an old-school setup either
I love my old 16ga 311. Mine is from the 60s I believe.
This was the first time I've ever messed with one, but it seems to be a pretty decent setup so far
As a shotgun hunter I really appreciate your content.
Glad you enjoy! There's plenty more coming
I've got one like that in 20ga and love it. Shot a lot of quail and dove with that thing.
I bet that 12 can hold it's own still.
Yep, it definitely seems like its still got some performance left in it
Definitely nice Patterns. I love SxS shotguns , especially with an English Stock. Great video as always.
Glad you enjoyed!

Glad you are enjoying, we've got plenty more on the way! Salt Creek makes some great stuff, so they are definitely worth trying out
Matt, I just gave that exact shotgun to my Grandson.
It seems like he's gonna have a pretty nice setup

I could not begin to tell you how many rabbits fell to my Stevens 311 in 20 gauge. I also have the same 311 in a 16 gauge.

Does that company have those shells in 16 ga. I have a old winchester model 12 with a short chamber.
