I am the poster child for your video on the three mistakes beginners make when learning the piano. I have mastered all three mistakes and can now repeat them with my eyes closed, which actually sounds better. I decided to teach myself piano because I’m delusional and cheap and thus get my money’s worth. I became obsessed with learning “River Flows In You” even though it’s way above my skill level. I found your instructional video for the piece and am currently working on it daily. After several hours I can now almost play the first line! My bad, of course. I think you are a wonderful teacher and I am forcing myself to take your advice and get back to the basics. Thank you.
I am just starting to teach myself piano at the age of 48. Luckily i am also an intermidiate guitarist so i understand a reasonable amount of theory. I'm finding this helps alot but the mechanics of playing the piano is obviously the harder part. Thankfully i have found you to guide me on a new branch of my musical journey! Hello. I just found your channel, and I am very impressed. You might be the RUclips teacher I have been looking for. Self taught about 2 weeks ago. About the 10th attempt over 40 years. RUclips has been a godsend and a curse. I'm trying to slow the pace while RUclips lessons tend to skip things. I am spending so much time trying to train my finger independence, and trying to learn songs I probably shouldn't be trying. But in trying songs that are too hard, I learned to plan hand positioning for comfort. This usually sets me up for the natural progression in the song. The ugly part is I picked up bad finger control, and I am spending days correcting finger independence and hand relaxation. I'm playing scales brutally slow now, and as soon as I start to speed up, the fingers start to stick up in the air again.
Thank you for your skillful, sincere and professional education. Yes, it is difficult to stay the course and not get ahead of myself. Your guidance makes the hard work a little less painful. Thank you for making the world a better place through your gift of music education

LOL! I'm an ABSOLUTE beginner and ABSOLUTELY self-taught, and i laughed about the ILLOGICAL FINGERS... That's SO me! Thank you for the video! -i keep on wathcing it now... (few hours later) i finally ended up the video -i'm working, lol. "OVERWHELMING!!!" THAT'S ME! See, my husband gave me a keyboard as my birthday present, on early Dec 2021. The next day, i was trying to play Tori Amos' "caught a lite sneeze", LMAO!! But hey, key by key i made my way into the chorus -one hand only, of course! So thank you for the patience to teach. I LOVE this channel! I started teaching myself piano when I was 7 or 8, and with the help of other music classes and friends, I've made great progress over the years. This video called me out so much, I HAD to watch the whole thing😂 but I learned so much already and I'm excited to put my knowledge to use🤙🏿
I’m a guitarist of 40 years experience & have just purchased a Roland RD2000 with absolutely no keyboard experience. You are the answer to my prayers. Thank you. With long nails on right hand 😐 Interesting that coming from a fretboard background I find scales much more obvious on keyboard. Modes maybe involve a more in-depth understanding.
What's your best advice for actually getting your left hand to work wit the right, I'm learning a song which I can actually independently do the left and the right but together not at all are there any exercises that will help train this
Have seen several videos for songs recently as have been having private lessons for a few years now, but have always rebelled against the strictness of learning ‘classical’ piano and it’s methods (no one nowadays wants to play Bach, it was Ray Charles and Elton John that started it off for me). Plus no one I know plays piano. So when I stumbled upon Francesca’s videos and more importantly the clear explanations she gives (not to mention the sheer volume of output and work rate of the woman - for free let’s not forget), I have to say I’ve picked up and enjoyed practicing piano more in the past month than I have in the past three years. An excellent guide, a thorough (non-patronising or demeaning) teacher, and seemingly an all round nice person. Could not recommend her, her channel and her videos highly enough. Thank you and don’t change👌👍🎶

This video was really helpful. I was actually taught as a child and young teenager by two different teachers so I have the fundamentals but I’m so rusty and haven’t played for 2 decades. So I bought a piano this week and decided I’d play ABBA’s Thank You For The Music as an ode to my grandad who got me started with the piano BUT having watched several tutorials on RUclips I realised and accepted it was way above my current level, so managed my expectations. I’ve also been bombarding myself watching video after video, mainly on your channel now actually. Excited to learn this and learn that BUT again I’m going to take your advice and chill on it. I’ve learned Feel by Robbie Williams, Let It Be, and brushed up on 2 Bach pieces from when I was a kid (prelude in c and minuet in g) and now I’ll start Rolling In The Deep. This is about my level right now but it’s cool. One day I’ll manage TYFTM by ABBA! Keep up this amazing channel and I’ll keep sharing it and telling people about it xx
I'm glad this has helped :) Yes trying to learn something that's above your current level will make you feel frustrated; your time is better spent mastering pieces of music at your level! Sense of achievement is crucial to your continued enthusiasm to learn an instrument :)

It's so great and I'm currently learning how to play "I don't want to miss a thing" with you 🙂 I must object to one thing here.. in my opinion it isn't necessary to have a solid knowledge of music theory in order to be able to play the piano, unless you want to compose yourself or improvise. You just need to be able to read the notes, know some chords, be able to play the scales and be a good listener. I hardly know any music theory and I can already play many pieces at a decent level. Keep up your great work!
I’m afraid not having a basic understanding of music theory makes learning pieces of music a longer process. Reading notes, playing chords and understanding scales IS music theory…you just described what it is. Not sure what you think it is otherwise…?

I'm a self taught beginner, I've been trying to learn piano for about almost a year, but I have some problems about finding the right place to learn piano, I actually started with an app, but sadly I can't afford all of the courses they offered because I have some financial problems, and piano courses price in my city is much more higher than the app's price I actually almost gave up but luckily, I found your channel thank you very much for all of the knowledge, God bless you! :D

Since I planned to "self learn" playing piano from online resources, guilty of of mistake 2 & 3 . Rectified mistake no 2 a while back ; but mistake no 3 , still do it from time to time .
Dear Francesca, I’m doing your first piano course. It is very good, although difficult. Especially the rhythm. You explain the basics. I have some, probably stupid, questions. I see that you are playing very often on the keys between the black keys. Is that only when you have to play also a black key? When I have to play with my right hand left of the central C, I twist my wrist. Is that because I’m sitting to close to the piano? You are really an excellent teacher. Kind regards, Henk Dirkse
Adult learner and yes...overwhelmed. That said I've not been making any funky hand mistakes and learning the scales while 'slowly' getting into the chords, and intervals. Question...the major/minor scales follow patterns with WWH... and WHW.... Is there something similar for chords or is that just memorization?
Can you teach some ways how to practice with both hands? I am having hard time using both hands. I can individually play notes using either of those but cant seem to have the co-ordination to use both. Also how many minutes or hours of practice is recommended each day?

I have first time started learning piano . I can play multiple instruments harmonium and other indian instruments but never played piano so downloaded the app before getting actual piano . And started with baby shark video of yours . 🥰
Mam i am from india and a self taught when I started playing harmonium (a Indian classical instrument) I started playing my right hand and after 8 years my right hand is strechble but not not left because I didn't had practises I want to learn western classical now.i tried a lot but still my left hand didn't works. I’d agree with everything you say if you want to master the instrument. But it can put people off if they just see years of practicing scales etc. Sometimes just having fun with an instrument can lead to a lifetime’s enjoyment. You can mess about in boats and have fun, you may not want to enter the cowes regatta.
I don’t say that you can’t have fun with playing the piano and that all you should do is play scales 😐 Scales are important to play as they improve finger dexterity, understanding of theory/chords and how to navigate instinctively around the keys; especially helpful for improvising. I have many videos on ‘how to have fun’ playing piano - my entire channel is dedicated to just that.
Do you have a link to your scales video please? I’ve just started playing piano. I’ve played brass instruments when I was younger, then bass which I just played by ear now the family have bought a piano. I know how important scales are so need to emphasise this with the family. Hello Francesca. I have a very big problem that is literaly stopping me from enjoying or even becoming better. Everytime I practice of of simplypiano, my sheet music reading has gotten a slight better. But everytime I want enjoy by playing the keys and makeing up my own music, it really bothers me. Feels like I want to give up. I start taping two keys instead of one, and I dont even want to talk about left hand. My rythm gets lost and my left hand is just breaking the rhythm of the music. I feel like I cant hear the music I want. And also, I can hear the music and I know I can play, it's just I cant keep steady with keys and play it smoothly you know. I start hitting wrong keys by hitting double out of no where, and my left hand cant even play the notes. I know that you where the only one that would respond and give good advise. What can I do to get out of this problem. I see that others play smoothly but I am still behind. But I dont to leave piano becuase I know can reach it and I am not the only one. You may respond when ever you have time. Thank you.

Thank you very much for this video!!! It really boosted my confidence actually:). It looks like I am on the right path yay! First three months I focused on simple coordination and fingers independence exercises and scales. This is my fourth month. Expanding scales to two, three and four octaves (playing around with major and minor scale), introducing arpeggios, chords (oh boy they sound together soooo beautifully). Looks like for many people the biggest problem is to do (different) things both hands at the same time. Well, I guess my self taught drums in my youth really paying off now lol. I am definitely going to watch your channel often!! Thank you so much.

Do you have like lesson 1 and beyond because I am new and some things I am lost. I have a hard time reading notes becuase I always have to make sure finger positiong. Also playing by ear.
Overwhelmed, yep, that's it right there ! Scales, theory, tutorials ..... Head explodes. It's a skill and it takes a lot of time. I have been playing only a few months, I'm a smart guy, I get the theory, but it's hard and progress seems so slow. One day you feel you have something, then it's gone :-( but I will keep going. Your tutorial videos are a big help, thank you.

Rectified mistake no 2 a while back ; but mistake no 3 , still do it from time to time .
It's very easy to find yourself digging deeper into an information hole! Trying to stick to a course ideally with a teacher's guidance is ideal!
Dear Francesca, I’m doing your first piano course. It is very good, although difficult. Especially the rhythm. You explain the basics. I have some, probably stupid, questions. I see that you are playing very often on the keys between the black keys. Is that only when you have to play also a black key? When I have to play with my right hand left of the central C, I twist my wrist. Is that because I’m sitting to close to the piano? You are really an excellent teacher. Kind regards, Henk Dirkse

Adult learner and yes...overwhelmed. That said I've not been making any funky hand mistakes and learning the scales while 'slowly' getting into the chords, and intervals. Question...the major/minor scales follow patterns with WWH... and WHW.... Is there something similar for chords or is that just memorization?

Can you teach some ways how to practice with both hands? I am having hard time using both hands. I can individually play notes using either of those but cant seem to have the co-ordination to use both. Also how many minutes or hours of practice is recommended each day?

You won’t be able to properly develop finger dexterity if your keyboard isn’t weighted, or play with expression if it’s not touch sensitive.
I am 45 years old and I am a beginner! I have played guitar for 32 years though. I am currently learning scales and correct fingering. I practice scales daily.

I have a hard time remembering the difference between major and minor any advice ?
Major chords have a system of 4,3 semitones and minor chords have a system of 3,4 semitones
I'm self taught. I even made my own piano using sheets of paper just to practice Greyson Chance's song, Waiting Outside The Lines.

Mam i am from india and a self taught when I started playing harmonium (a Indian classical instrument) I started playing my right hand and after 8 years my right hand is strechble but not not left because I didn't had practises I want to learn western classical now.i tried a lot but still my left hand didn't works. What should I do? Please reply.
I’d agree with everything you say if you want to master the instrument. But it can put people off if they just see years of practicing scales etc. Sometimes just having fun with an instrument can lead to a lifetime’s enjoyment. You can mess about in boats and have fun, you may not want to enter the cowes regatta.
I don’t say that you can’t have fun with playing the piano and that all you should do is play scales 😐
Scales are important to play as they improve finger dexterity, understanding of theory/chords and how to navigate instinctively around the keys; especially helpful for improvising.
I have many videos on ‘how to have fun’ playing piano - my entire channel is dedicated to just that.

I’ve just started playing piano. I’ve played brass instruments when I was younger, then bass which I just played by ear now the family have bought a piano. I know how important scales are so need to emphasise this with the family.

Hello Francesca. I have a very big problem that is literaly stopping me from enjoying or even becoming better. Everytime I practice of of simplypiano, my sheet music reading has gotten a slight better. But everytime I want enjoy by playing the keys and makeing up my own music, it really bothers me. Feels like I want to give up. I start taping two keys instead of one, and I dont even want to talk about left hand. My rythm gets lost and my left hand is just breaking the rhythm of the music. I feel like I cant hear the music I want. And also, I can hear the music and I know I can play, it's just I cant keep steady with keys and play it smoothly you know. I start hitting wrong keys by hitting double out of no where, and my left hand cant even play the notes. I know that you where the only one that would respond and give good advise. What can I do to get out of this problem. I see that others play smoothly but I am still behind. But I dont to leave piano becuase I know can reach it and I am not the only one. You may respond when ever you have time. Thank you.

Thank you very much for this video!!! It really boosted my confidence actually:). It looks like I am on the right path yay! First three months I focused on simple coordination and fingers independence exercises and scales. This is my fourth month. Expanding scales to two, three and four octaves (playing around with major and minor scale), introducing arpeggios, chords (oh boy they sound together soooo beautifully). Looks like for many people the biggest problem is to do (different) things both hands at the same time. Well, I guess my self taught drums in my youth really paying off now lol. I am definitely going to watch your channel often!! Thank you so much.

Overwhelmed, yep, that's it right there ! Scales, theory, tutorials ..... Head explodes. It's a skill and it takes a lot of time. I have been playing only a few months, I'm a smart guy, I get the theory, but it's hard and progress seems so slow. One day you feel you have something, then it's gone :-( but I will keep going. Your tutorial videos are a big help, thank you.
