- Part 1 in the series. New Vanagon Westfalia TDI project! I was searching for a long time to find exactly this - a rust free TDI vanagon.
Stay tuned for some vanagon build videos! It needs a lot of work, but the fun is only getting started!!

Nice van and should move nicely with that TDI installed
Nice purchase 👌🏻
Thank you!
She is gorgeous so jealous
Thank you! I should have her up and running soon..! I’ll make sure to post a video!!
I love this Car.
Looking forward to the window shield rust repair. My Cabriolet has this. I hear it's common on VWs.
It is. Somehow the way the gasket and body interface, there is always rust there. Doing it properly requires cutting and welding. But it’s well worth it.
Looks great. We didn't get T3 Westys in Australia. So I have a local version called a Trakka with a massive roo bar on the frontIf you are changing to watercooled you might want to consider cutting in the lower grille to the front (while you are fixing the rust) to help airflow.Also. Take the luggage tray off the front of the cab for a clean. the drain holes get clogged and might be causing the rust.
I’m really torn about cutting that hole in the front. I’ve been thinking a lot about it. I think I will be able to get by without it. The tdi is notorious for not producing a ton of heat, so I was going to try to get by with keeping the air cooled look of no extra front grille and just have two massive fans.
Good point about the luggage tray. I need to tackle a few things with regards to the topper, so I’ll add that to the list. I appreciate it!
Great video and introduction, all subbed up now! Have you identified who made the engine mount crossbar? It's a quality looking part.
Awesome rig! I just bought a 81 westy and a 01 tdi yesterday! Starting my swap this weekend!
Oh heck yes!!! Keep me posted! I’ve got an email address listed in the about page. I also have an Instagram. I’d love to chat. A couple questions below which I’m curious as to your plans!
You doing any power upgrades?
How are you mounting the engine?
Are you doing any transmission work?
What’s your plan for heat?
Any other plans for the van?!
Yeah you bet, I'll be posting a few videos of the build on RUclips eventually. I'll follow you on ig.
-Tuning computer though Malone eco tune.
-I'm a fabricator so I'll be building a custom crossmember
-regearing 3&4th with weddle gears
-mounting a heat/ac box under the dash
-not as of right now, just get it running and driving then some more mods
@@TinCupOutdoors solid plan!!
-I’ve got a Malone tune on my ecu right now. It’s a stage 4 tune..so it’s going to scoot haha
-good call. Some people make some really nice crossmembers. You can change the oil pan to a Passat oil pan if you want to run the cross member perpendicular to the engine.
-good call. Also buy an upgraded carrier or whatever. Apparently that’s the weak part on 3/4 gear
-are you planning on going with the smallcar setup? It’s pricey but looks super fancy and nice.
Good luck on the project!! They are a ton of fun
@@OlisGarage yeah stage 4 is going to rip! So far I'm planning on swapping the jettas heater/ac box over. That'll be the last step so who know what's happen.
I see your engine is at 15°, did he modify the deck lid to fit?
@@TinCupOutdoors I have an adaptor to raise the deck lid actually. Not sure who made it, but it seems like it would cost a pretty penny. It will raise the whole deck lid a few inches and move it to the right (pass side).
Can you do a video on an engine replacement, I recently spun a bearing and need a new engine
You should definetly remove that egr valve to really wake it up!
Hi, ? On your struts on the pop top/ I notice how yours are installed/ backwards from the way they installed mine/ I am having real problems on raising and lowering mine/ I have the heavy duty struts on mine/ Thule bin on top/ any ideas on this matter? thx
On my 1.5 diesel rabbit pickup how can I check the idle speed and what should the idle be? And what can I use use to check the idle?
So it is not running? How much did you pay for it with all these
'nice" upgrades?
Not running, yet!!! But yes, a non running van.
where did you place the ECU? Was it on the right side rear area in the back behind the tail light? If so any water issues?
I haven’t gotten that far yet. I was thinking somewhere in the back. The tail light is notoriously wet. So I’m trying to avoid that. I was thinking I’ll place it to the right of the original engine lid, where the engine deck lid raiser has some room. Itll still be under the engine lid, but the deck lid raiser pushes the lid to the right, so I have some room there.
@@OlisGarage, I have seen a few folks place a waterproof box in that area. I will update you once I figure out what I will do. Thanks for the reply
@@JohnSmith-oj3uu welcome. The ecu sat underneath the windshield in the mk4s. So it is weatherproof. But I definitely understand not wanting it to sit in the open and get wet.
What engine are you using?
@@OlisGarage 2002 Jetta ALH - I just ordered a Cable enclosed it should fit the ECU and still have some air flow where the cables will go in
Part We will see - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4FSKZM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Are those nozzles for the injectors?
Yes they are!
@@OlisGarage Nice!
I hope you make an detailed video about them.
I have never heard of them. Why are they better and how to install them?
Do you think they can make a differenze in my 1.6l Diesel Golf MK2?
I will never understand why people say Kilometers when they live in America.
