As you know, it's a matter of choice: the floating pickup gives a much lighter(airy) sound while the set-in humbucker gives a much firmer sound, more suitable for louder jevels.I'd suggest people buy both whenever they can. I made a pretty big mistake by refusing to buy a second guitar strictly equivalent to mine with a set-in P90... anybody who wishes to play the old acoustic way with denser chords is bound to chose the suspended pickup while single note players who can't comp...continued

yes, a nice clear sound, but don't forget that the mike used for recording ( and talking) is in front of the body and picks up the acoustic sound too, hence increasing clarity. So you may retain this clarity in recording mode but never in a live situation. Excellent guitar and excellent player anyway.

I used to have an Ibanez Howard Roberts Jazz Box in Wine Red with an oval sound hole. I regret selling it as I have a had a recent Jazz renaissance. Was a cool piece, I miss it.

I had picked that one up for $700 CDN and sold it for $1000. The money seems so unimportant right now. Any body have a suggestion for a replacement?

love the sound with that pickup, mine is too bright...luckily i have old gibsons..
btw, even in this dinky demo video your playing clearly comes across as "too fluid and too expressive"... i wish one could teach that...i'm no slouch, but now i'm depressed

    Hi Rick,
It's a beautiful guitar, but as a professional luthier I would never have set the pickups into the top like Ibanez did. I have always made my archtops with suspended pickups (attached to the neck or pickguard) like Bob Benedetto. It just cuts up the vibrations of the top to much. Of course a very large part of making any guitar sound great is the player and you make it sound great.
