If the upper chain roller is still there, remove that ASAP and replace with a set screw locktighted in. Many reports and photos of roller removing itself AND a chunk of the frame with it. The roller is too close and gets way too much force on full suspension compression. LED headlight is a must. My stock one was absolute garbage. I get pretty much get all my parts from Procycle...they have everything! Enjoy the bike!

I used to know a guy who put 125K on one of these motorcycles. He ended up selling it to another guy in his small club who put another 50K on it, and then I lost track of it. Kind of keep an eye on your wheel bearings as the miles add up. He also had an old school upholstery guy build a much better seat for it, one that would easily last all day. It was flat with gel and really good quality foam. His bunch of riders, stayed off of paved roads, and would ride from coast to coast on almost all dirt roads. These guys were not youngsters either, mostly 60 and over. He did the same thing earlier with a KLR, but liked the DR better because of it`s simplicity and less weight.

The DR is a great bike you have some nice additions to it as well. I do consider the DR a dual sport and not an ADV bike though. The 21” front wheel, lighter weight and no fairing “stock” kind of makes it a DS in my book.
I ride a Pan America as my adventure bike and a WR250R as my dual sport bike. I think you may like some kind of rackless luggage that holds it in tight to the bike and low . It really makes the bike handle better off road and on road too. I pack for 5 days camping in my 40l set up easy.
Those Tusk D-sport tires are really pretty good tires they are cheap $120 a set delivered to my door and durable too. Check out the reviews.
Looking forward to what you do with it and where you ride.

The DR650 is the median between the KLR650 and the XR650L. Not as good on the road as the KLR, not as capable off roas as the XR650L. So a pretty safe choice. If you're going to do a lot of traveling to different altitudes I'd suggest a Lectron carb, it's almost like fuel injection. No rejetting necessary when the altitude changes. It's pricy though.

    • @JordanRay

I have a 2011, cruise 85mph on the highway geared 14-46 with a 520 conversion. The 520 makes it easy to find a good chain reasonable. 520 conversion is bolt on using a JT JTR822-XX rear steel sprocket (XX= tooth count) and a JT JTF 438-XX front or preferably a Fritzco sprocket which provides more spline contact area. Toss the upper chain roller, plug the hole or not, and put an All Balls 79-5001 roller on the lower position. This setup has been trouble free running RK XSO xring chain or EK oring chains. Might want to consider the Suzuki countershaft seal retainer, 24751-32E00 and a new chain buffer 61273-13E01. If you use the JT front sprocket you will need to remove the flange on the sprocket retainer plate for any size under 15 teeth. I'm running a 4.9 gal. IMS tank. Great choice of bike, solid compromise between street and dirt!

Hey bro, i have an old suzuki v-strom, you wont go wrong with an old suzuki i tells ya!
Just a small mod suggstion, try an Atlas throttle lock, they aren't like a normal throttle lock, it has a push button on/off and you can still move it if you need to.
I use one on the highways here and its a game changer on long trips.
As for tyres depending on how agressive you want to get I'm using shinko 705s on my bike for gravel and dirt roads, they are cheap as dirt and work pretty good! If you want to go heavier i would go to the 804 and 805s.
I chew through tyres fast ( about 7000-9000km) even with expensive ones so the shinko has worked out pretty good.
They are a bit slippy in the wet though

Nice choice, it should do the trick. Someone put a lot of great parts on it. You may look into Moskomoto Reckless 10's for luggage for day rides. It keeps the weight down low instead of having the weight above the seat height. It makes a big difference on handling. It still allows for lighter gear, such as jackets and such to be secured on top. I run the Reckless 80's for longer trips, but the 40's may make more sense.
Tires are a personal compromise. Aggressive tires are noisy on the street, but give excellent traction off road, not just forward traction, also side to side. It becomes noticeable when running over rocks, they tend not slide off the side of them as much, gives a much more stable ride. If you are not off road much the noise may not be worth it. Look forward to hearing your adventures, dualsport riding is my passion, I have the mended bones, and scares to prove. Thanks for sharing.

Here is a list of what I would recommend. 1) Replace both tires due to the date code. 2) Weld a larger kickstand foot on it. 3) Better headlight, I do seem to be the furthest from home when it gets dark. 4) O-ring chain and sprockets set, old and dried out orings tend to fail pretty quickly even if re lubed.
