It depends on how light your client is going. You start 1 inch away front the root and about 1 inch from the ends when the color is about halfway to what i am looking for, i then add color to the roots and ends. Due to the heat of your head, the roots will catch up fast and then you time and watch and remove and rinse when your satisfied.
