I love that when you change angles on faces like this (like in V for vendetta) the expression or emotion seems to change. That’s so wild. You’re a skilled artist. Keep up the good work! ❤
Dude please never stop doing what you are doing!! You will inspire millions!! We need this in a world where art, craftsmanship and culture is slowly wasting away! Great work my dude!
That is such an interesting comment. I'm going to think about this all day and figure out where else in the world this is in effect. Thank you for your insight.
@TimHollingworth The idea that a sculptor liberates the form within the stone originates with Michelangelo, as far as I know. The concept probably preceeded him.
Dude is not only a master woodworker, but he also has the softest most gentle voice. I could fall asleep listening to him. I want him to read an audio book
Man this is an amazing talent you have!! I wish i had the skill and patience to carve wood like this. Awesome piece of art, thanks for sharing your talent.
This is really fantastic, but one detail that stood out to me that I love is the lop-sided eyes. So many people try to make faces perfectly symmetrical despite that not being realistic, I even fall into that trap every now and again if I’m drawing eyes on autopilot despite disagreeing with it. Love how it looks on this!
Great sculpture! FYI, the medium viscosity CA glue you used there works better if you put it on one side, more just lengthens the drying time. And for wood a low viscosity CA glue would dry quicker & bond better since it penetrates the fibers, best for a flat surface. Medium/high viscosity is better for uneven surfaces to fill tiny gaps.
I was thinking wood glue would work better even though it has a longer drying time. I'm no expert on glue, just saying. But what he said about too much is definitely true especially with super glue. Locktite makes a 2 part glue that's like bondo or JB weld, the 2nd being an activator.
@@briangautreaux3072 there is no better glue for the wood than PVA under a good pressure. It is water-based, non-toxic glue and penetrates fibers very good.
My grandfather was a beautiful carver and he mostly used mahogany. He carved beautifil women carrying jugs of water. I wish i could have seen him carve. Your face and carving is beautiful. I have never heard of cotton wood bark. I like your voice.
My grandpa's hobby was carving faces he saw in his dreams, most of them would be native American and when he didn't have those dreams he'd carve out random ideas like he carved a hole and a bat in the center of it, he made it a walking cane for trails. I miss him a lot
He sounds like he was a great loving man. I'm sorry for your loss. Loosing a grandpa like that hurts the rest of your life. You learn to live without him but, its always there. I miss mine to. There wasn't anything he couldn't do. Blessings always. 🙏
Observing this carving left me in awe. I was observing the eyes above all else. You carved the eyes like we are in our real life, where one eye is wider and higher than the other. I honestly think that is realism. I applaud you sir. Take care and keep safe.
Tip for people who dont know: dull blades can cause this to happen. Sometimes it happens even if your blade is newly sharpened and its just bad luck, but to have it happen less, sharpen your tools often.
Sir, as a beginner carver, I must say, wicked work. For me the hardest part is the eyes, getting them symmetrical and to blend with the nose. Great video 👍🏻
Thank you! Eyes are definitely super tricky. I'm always working on making them more realistic and I have a long way to go! Glad you have found this great hobby as well😊
I believe thats why he sanded straight away while its still a bit wet. I'd assume it would glue better this way. The glue still is just attaching wood fibres to wood fibres without the sawdust interfering with the bond. The sawdust then goes into the tiny cracks after and onto the superficial glue. Then again, im not a professional, just my thought process.
This method works great to hide superficial cracks. Which, essentially is occurring when he uses the sand paper on the excess, non-dry, glue. I imagine that using the sawdust glue mixture for something this small (with very fine details) is more hassle and noticeable than letting it just occur itself 😁
My grandpa always used to carve faces into wood like this. He loved to find knotty sticks and made faces into them as walking sticks. Thanks for sharing, and reminding me of my late grandpa.
Uni-Solve is a medical adhesive remover that makes CA glue cleanup super easy and doesn’t leave any residue that impedes finishes or paints. I use it in veneer repair all the time and it’s great. You can get it in a liquid, or in individually wrapped wet wipes.
In ancient Italy, if a carver messed up a stone, they couldn’t use super glue to fix it. They used wax. It was hard to notice- unless it got hot and began to melt. A real great piece would be available and signed by the creator- “Sine Cera” which is Latin for, without wax. In Spanish it would be “Sin Cera”. That morphed into English to mean “pure”, or “genuine”, which became “Sincerely”. Sincerely, Richard
Peter Engler from the Ozarks could do these all day long! He was featured in the News & even appeared on many tv shows, one being “Captain Kangaroo” a most popular children’s show back in the day. He had a nice place in Branson Missouri for several years. Did many Santa’s & other Hill Billy works, all adorable! Also carved fireplace mantles that were absolutely stunning too! Your work looks a lot like his. Did he perhaps inspire what you do now? I think his nephew named John is carrying on the family art form & painting as well. Good work! 👍👏😊

I believe thats why he sanded straight away while its still a bit wet. I'd assume it would glue better this way.
