Primitive Bow Build | Catch and Cook | Island Survival

- A primitive bamboo bow, primitive arrows with barbed black palm tips, a coconut torch, tide pools and sleeping fish! Sounds like the makings for an island survival primitive catch and cook to me! This week I’m down in the Caribbean with friend, and fellow Alone participant, Matt Coradino. We’re building primitive bamboo bow fishing gear with machetes and heading out to the ocean tide pools to bow fish by torchlight. The coconut shells burn with a bright light so we can spot fish sleeping in the shallow pools. If you’re into primitive survival, catch and cook, or bow building, this one’s for you!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

I appreciate how you showed all of the missed shots when you guys were hunting, rather than cutting those out and only showing the one successful shot. Generally that leaves people like myself with more honest expectations when doing similar things. Also, the coconut torch! So cool.

Recently on this channel I requested a primitive bow & arrow hunt, but never dreamed it would be so impressive. Clay, you exceeded my expectations by a million percent. Thanks for making this video, and there is no doubt why you won the Alone series. Incredible!
Thank you very much!
@@clayhayeshunter Awesome video!
Este vídeo foi feito na América do Sul?
I don't know all of your goals on this, but to me it seems a spear would be more efficient in the tidal pools than a bow.
@@maniachill3069 what you know about this.spear ask lot training to bee efficient
Clay/Matt..that the coolest thing I have saw in a while. Love the primitive bow
Thanks Cecil
Awesome video this week Clay. You’re putting a lot of work into these and we thank you.

Very cool. I love the tropics and saltwater fishing altogether. Nothing like the taste of fresh caught reef fish.
Jack lighting fish with a coconut torch…I’ve seen it all now! Great job, guys! 🙌🏼😝
haha!
What a great video clay. I would have never guessed that you’re supposed to use the inside of the bamboo for the back of the bow, and basically tiller the back. Opposite of any wood bow. Very interesting. Without knowing this I would have done it backwards.
Everytime I watch this guy I just get reminded I need to sharpen my machete
I loved ❤️ survival video love❤️from(india)tripura
Thank God for alone or I might not have ever found you brother.
I have such a long way to go but everyone around me swears they've never seen anyone shoot a recurve like I do. Didn't even own one until I watched you on that show.
I think you're one of the greats of our time and I thank you for showing me everything I know about a stick bow.
God bless you and your family brother thank you for the content and the knowledge.
Nicely done!
I wish clay would open up bow building classes again (primitive/survival)
One of your coolest videos yet. And that's saying something! I can't imagine the amount of time that goes into each one of these, but I just can't get enough. Thank you and please keep 'em coming!
That was a great build to watch!
Good work! Thanks for sharing!!
nice bow and nice torch
Awesome primitive skills there bro
And here's the winner of Season 8 of ALone!
👊
Brother i am from India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 but your video super i love this bow
Petualangan yang menyenangkan teman..👍good
Awesome 👊🏻
Was hoping you were gonna do this down there 👍🏻
Should've wrote Wilson on the bow 😁🏝
Next time!
Your primitive skills brother are second to none fantastic video
What an incredible channel! I feel like I just witnessed human behavior from thousands of years ago, yet there are still places where you can see this today. As a technology-saturated millennial, all I can say is thank you for this escape from modern day garbage.
Many thanks
I had a feeling you were out at Matt and Carmen's. Thanks for the superb content. Big ups!🤙
Hi from Ukraine, I si you video, thank you!
Really cool to see you go through the whole process. I have some bamboo I harvested 2 years ago in Alabama; now I’m motivated to dig it out of the shop. Thank you for the inspiration. God Bless your family.
have fun!

High quality inspiration! Thank you!
Loving the frequent uploads, you are by far my favourite youtuber, and you suckered me back into trad hunting got a hand full of snowshoe hares and a grouse so far this winter 👍
First ever bow I made was a eastern red cedar elk sinew backed with B55 strings. I watched your videos hundreds of times to make sure I was doing it right. It came out really good held up for about a year then one day it snapped. Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge!!
Hundreds of times. . .sure buddy.
@@gamedrop3262 you watch me?
Awesome Clay. Make it from scratch.
Very Very Impressive Knife Work!!!
thats some crazy knowledge you guys have. you should do your own survival series but not with often fake help like bear grylls but real like this video. is just much more fun to watch :)
Great video, Clay and Matt. I think I'd have been going for that rooster, though. 😄🐔
Your family and you are great people Clay Hayes. Keep up the great work and I pray God continues to bless y’all on all your journeys and adventures!
Thanks so much

I think I have found the first and so far only survival channel that actually shows how to achieve success in survival and that does not cheat to avoid failure. Because with most people the plan either never works and they give up, and the other half usually cheats and only pretends that they really caught the fish, for example.
Thanks 🙏
Top Clay!
Funny to see grownups playing cavemen, and the camera guy salivating .. thanks clay, that’s a new one!!
Hard shot... TNX 4 VID
Wow thanks for sharing that adventure
you should make more survival videos !! this is even outstanding the main survival channels by far! and of course also the fake ones BECAUSE THIS HERE SEEMS REAL!! :). thanks for that epic video. thats true survival.
that coconut torch is cool
This was awesome to watch, can you make more?
If you watch their reflections when they're aiming, you can see how the arrow's reflection bends in the water. I've done bow fishing, and lemme tell ya, it's not like regular archery. All that said, this was a very enjoyable video!
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Super cool video! The crafting of the bow and arrows from local materials was awesome and then to use it in a bow fishing situation was next level. One of the coolest hunting/fishing videos I've seen. Bravo. What an amazing experience that must have been.
I know youre proficient with hand tools, but watching you use that multitool saw on top of your knee killed me lol.
Yummy 🤤 Fish 🐟
Was surprise to see the bamboo bow made inside out, but it held up good. Coconut flame light was also working real good.
Excellent video Clay! It brought back many fond memories as a kid living in Hawaii where my friends and I would make bows and tip our arrows with the large, black spines from the century plant, looks like a very large aloe vera plant. Love the content!
Good times!
Damn Clay! Going all mountain man with the beard ... 😁
Ky nang sinh ton cua anh ay rat la cao ,chuc mot ngay tot lanh
Awesome bro!! It makes a bloke wanna be there lol😜😎👍👍👍
Semangat saudara q, I LIKE YOU
Nice bow and torch design and build however to catch fish at night with local materials, it would seem most practical to just block off the pools entirely and catch them at low tide, second to that maybe a hand woven net?, lastly a multiple prong spear would seem to work better as tridents have existed since the caveman era.
wow, now that something I didn't know. *mental note filled Coconuts make natural lighting per coconut oil. GREAT INFO!
If you're gonna cook them on the coal's better to leave the scales on brother. Awesome vid
Not if you want to eat the skin😉
Love this videos
Much respect from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It looks a lot warmer where you are haha. When you come back to Idaho would you be so kind as to do a pacific yew stave selection/harvest video?
Living here in the deciduous rain forest (jungle) of the western NC mountains, I'm a machete and cane fan so that was cool to see. I know river cane makes great arrows but have you ever tried to make a river cane bow? Thanks for another great video Clay, you get some of us out there that can't make it anymore.
Now that is old school as it gets
Awesome video! The fire shots were well thought out, loved the opening scene!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great work Gents!
Good stuff! I plan on going down river soon, thanks for the video
Muchas gracias !!!
Bamboo is awesome stuff but be careful cutting and shaping it. It can give you a wicked cut
great video, thanks
Looks like fun!!!
Indonesia 🇮🇩love you
Amazing
Pretty dang sweet!👍😁🏹
I love your video
Very cool!
Clay such a Bada$$ video ! 🤘
many thanks!
Awesome video!!
Great person great bow👍
Always I late for your video but 1st time one hours of your uploading I am watching .
Whenever I make bamboo bow I used a piece of bambo on center of bow
Very cool video Clay. You should name your bow Wilson 😁
I like it!
Muy bueno bien natural saludo de Bs As
Well done! Informative, entertaining and fun. Thanks for sharing! From ont, Canada
Glad you enjoyed it!
Woww God God 👍💯
Such a cool vid
Good stuff!!
Glad you enjoyed it
You can determine the light refraction angle by sticking the arrow or spear into the water then aim accordingly.
Good tip
Castaway wouldn't have been as dramatic if they used Clay instead of Tom.
Awesome video, as always. I've been a follower from the beginning but I must admit, I don't care for the non-verbal... lol I like to know what's going on! Keep up the great work 👍
Should try making a bow outta that black palm that's the main bow material used natives in South America
You can tell by the background sounds that Clay is fixing to go kill a chicken ! (JK)😆😅🤣😂🤣
Great video. Keep 'em coming !
😜
Wonderful ❤️👌
Nice
Thanks
your beard is glorious.
Fr
haha
Totally thought this would be the iguana
I'm still working on that one!
"The Lost boys", how much fun was that?
Hola clay buen video la punta de la flecha creo que es de palmera de tucun de Brasil saludos un poco corto el vídeo me quedé con ganas de ver más
Your skills are legit.
I wanted to ask to your perspective on a theory I have.
I think media has shown bushcraft style, survival videos on shows like Alone, Survivor (Kinda), Dual Survivor, Alaskan Bush People etc.
My opinion is that this is designed to make people think that survival is hard without a corporate master.
I have bushcraft skills, but I also use solar, biofuel, water catchment etc.
My philosophy is to mix tech, with bushcraft skills.
I wonder if our media, is showing "Off Grid" living, as really really hard work, instead of showing people how much easier it is than a fossil life, in 2023.
I guess, my question is, why wouldn't bushcraft, take advantage of modern tech, and add to the arsenal, and make life easier?
I saw one of these in the traditional bowyers Bible and I always wanted to make one, but I don't have local bamboo
Dude the coconut shell latern is so gangster!!! Great video brother!!! You were born for this man!!! I'm wondering though did you have to buy that machete there or were you able to bring all those on the plane??
I swear, if I see one shot of this guy sighting down a piece of crooked bamboo to see if it’s straight, I’m going to split my sides laughing.
Papua bow👍
impresive indeed .
but i wouldnt have used that leatherman saw across my knee as he did
Sensacional!!! Que complexo, uma verdadeira arte. Parabéns sou um grande fã. Forte abraço aqui do Brasil.
☠️🇧🇷🏡👨🏽🌾🌱👩🏼🌾🥩🌽🎣
That arrow looks so long on the bow lol. I was thinking you could almost just spear the fish with it
Awesome video I appreciate seeing the missed shots but why not make a spear for the shallow water? Also I was surprised to see you use the opposite side of the bamboo that I thought you would use. I want to get into archery with glass bottle arrowheads, just haven’t found the time
I just like bows. A spear would be very effective in that water though.
Hey Clay! Love the videos- You ever hunted or trapped in Michigan?
