Mr. Randy, I know of several bullets you endorse because I've watched your videos, and enjoy them. I think you should make a video of specific bullets you recommend for various game vs a few you don't recommend to help out the wildlife and the people.... thanks for your videos and time.

Randy, you are doing a very noble deed by waving the flag of concern in regard to the current hunting situation. We have become polluted with arrogance and egoism as a hunting community and a country as a whole. It is getting very ugly and we will soon pay a price. I fear that people such as your self voicing their concerns will largely fall apon deaf ears. There is a campaign to end big game hunting in several of the western and northern states, I know this for a fact. Our careless actions will only seal our fate further. In my opinion part of the wolf and grizzly bear agenda is to establish more predators to balance the game herds thereby making the transition away from big game hunting smoother. Making ourselves look like careless, inhumane, jackasses is just putting pavement on the path to loosing our hunting rights. Thanks Randy it’s refreshing to hear from good men like yourself.

Thanks Randy . My uncle told me 20 plus years ago that Nosler Partition is the only bullet you will ever need .
The only Hunting ammo that touches my Rifles . Is Nosler , Barnes , And GMX .
    I use a 18" Match Grade AR10 chambered in 308 .
165g Partition or 168g LR Accubond are the most accurate for Hunting ammo.
I know at the last elk camp I was at . Almost half the younger hunters had the ELDX chambered in 6.5CM. One thing Hornady has always been good at is Marketing. I've really only used the Hornady GMX In 5.56N and 6.8SPC. I've never used it in my 308.
Yes Hunting is taking a decline . It's very scary . I know where I live deer are way over normal population. There's been 8 people killed in car accidents caused by hitting deer during the RUT .
I just wish I had more time and money to hunt more . As of right now I've planned a Hog hunting trip in Texas and Elk trip in Colorado for next year.

Hey Randy thanks for the video on bullets. I'm switching to Barnes this year after watching your videos. I'll be testing the 120 and 140 gr TTSX 7mm in the 280. I always learn something from these videos. On those new deer regulations, i know how you feel. In the county i hunt here in Texas our wildlife dept enforced antler regulations on whitetail. We can shoot a buck with one unbranched antler (spike) and one that is wider than the ears. We were bummed out at first too. We have hunted this place since the 60s and only killed small bucks in the 100" range and rarely at that. I think we are 8 years under the new antler regulations now and we kill bucks in the 130" and up to 160s" with multiple bucks on our hit list each year. The bucks are getting to grow up. I know it sucks now because no meat in the freezer but in a couple years yall will be killing the biggest and heaviest bucks ever. Keep the videos coming.

However, if you guys don't get rid of some of those damn Canadian wolves that they brought into that area illegally and cut back on some of the grizzlies you aren't going to have anything left to hunt and then you will have a lot of pissed off people and it will be almost too late.

Hell no I wouldnt shoot a elk with a 44 mag at 50 yards. Maybe 5 feet !
Ive lost big hogs with my 44. A 44 is not as bad as Dirty harry said.
I might shoot a elk with a 454 at 50 yards if it was perfect !
And NO FUQIN WAY Id shoot a 6.5 at a elk at over 350 yards.
Let me ask you this ?why is it okay for people to shoot elk at 800 yards with a 6.5 Creedmoor yet they say don't shoot an elk at over 200 yards with a 7 mm08.
Because as far as I'm concerned have killed game with both and the 7mm08 performs better than the Creedmoor in every way on big hogs. And Im sure you can use a lrx and get just as good B.C.s out the 7mm08.
The Creedmoor has just got a lot of hot air behind it! Ive shot deer with the 6.5 cm, the 6.5x55 Swd and the 260 rem. I just dont see what the fuss is about. Its no more killing power than a 243 win with a ttsx in it.
The biggest difference in the Creedmoor and every other rifle caliber is the Creedmoor is having a buttload of advertisement and promotion done on it!

I've done gave up on using boat tailed bullets for hunting any game animal I intend to eat. The bad thing about them is they tend to swap ends resulting in a ton of ruined venison. Better to stick with the partitions and the flatbase Spitzer from Sierra pro Hunter bullets.
My 257 Weatherby groups that 117 grain Sierra pro Hunter into a group at 100 yards into groups you'd have to see to believe. It shoots the 120 partition bullets into half inch groups also using the exact same recipe, but hits one inch lower at 100 yards.
Since I don't hunt anything but deer with this old gun, it really doesn't matter which one that is used, as I always keep my shots inside of 350 yards.

Thanks for your post sir. Recently our wildlife officials in Saskatchewan have deemed the puny little .204 Ruger as an adequate big game cartridge but have banned almost all of the so called pistol cartridges for hunting even for deer with the exception of the 44 magnum. I wish these so called experts had your wisdom. My old 44-40 rifle used within it's limitations for close shots in the forest was an adequate deer rifle but I can't legally hunt with it anymore. I tested all the banned cartridges or loaded to their equivalent and compared them to the .204 Ruger. They all had deeper penetration and better performance in simulated hunting tests than the .204 Ruger. The 40 grain .204 Ruger bullet absolutely disintegrated with only about 1 inch of penetration in my test material (pressed processed meat) . When I slowed the load down to match .223 velocity it still completely fragmented but got slightly deeper penetration (about 2 inches ) into the meat test material. Every other load I tested including the .22 lr made an entrance and an exit hole and would no doubt have made into the vital lungs/organs of a deer.

Finally ran into the gunsmith /machinist who worked on a few of my rifles years ago. He was laughing about the 6.5 Creedmoor and people buying into the hype for hunting. Target absolutely. But he was of the opinion that the new calibers are flooding the market and stuff 5 years old you are hard pressed to find ammo already. Never had my 300 Weatherby, 338 Win Mag or my 270 let me down. Just my opinion

Well said. You don't have to look far to see the miss use of 6.5 creedmore on Elk, Eastmans just posted a youtube video of a guy shooting an Elk with a 140 grain ELD-X. The poor Bull did not even flinch after the shot, so he shot it again!! We have a responsibility to do all we can to harvest big game ethically. I understand that not everyone is well versed on ballistics. But once you know what is right you should pass that knowledge on to other hunters.

Randy, I have watched many of your videos , and I respect you and your opinion greatly. You remind me of my father. but I think it is important to remember that people are watching your videos from all over the country. For example in Iowa and Minnesota we are hunting whitetail deer that are about a hundred 160 to 180 lb. From a distance of 45 to 85 yards. From a tree stand along a deer trail.... that is a lot different then hunting an elk or a moose or a bighorn sheep at 250 yards. around here we need a bullet to expand quickly and not to fly another half a mile and hit a house or the 10 other deer standing behind the first one... you live in an amazing area and have the privilege of seeing large game and large fields whereas many times around the Midwest we're looking at thin-skinned animals inside of 85 yards.
I have personally seen a 150 grain SST go clear through 3 deer with one shot.
It hit the first deer and went in like a pencil and out the size of a dime went into the second deer the size of a dime and out like a quarter then dropped the third gear where it stood because by then the entrance was huge. but even the very first deer and the intended shot
was a perfect lung shot through the ribs.
that deer ran 60 yd and fell.
I was not the one who pulled that trigger but I was there to help clean all three deer and I thought to myself either 150 grain is too big or that bullet just did not expand the way that it should

  • @TakeDeadAim

I swear the younger generation thinks every bullet, rifle, cartridge designer of yesteryear was an idiot and never thought of some of the junk which is NOW being "designed". From goofy and unnecessary wildcat cartridges which do NOTHING better than 100+ year old rounds to the thin skinned, lightly constructed aerodynamic pellets they shoot. As if Nosler just all of the sudden came up with the partition on their first try. No matter what you're shooting at...I really don't think that ANY of these super fancy, expensive, plastic tipped bullets can either meet and certainly not exceed the TERMINAL performance of the old Partition.

I'm glad my dad was somewhat right and always told me Nosler Partitions and TSX were the best hunting game .
I use a 308 Win for Hunting . I've only shot 3 elk . One was at 157 yards using 168g TTSX . The elk went no more than 30 yards. The second one I shot was at 262(farthestshot) yards using 165g Partition . Elk went maybe 15 yards . The most recent was I shot at 204 yards using 165g Partition and took 2 steps and fell over .
I've only shot 1 bull elk and that was the one at 157 yards .
I use a Match Grade SS 18" AR10 Setup. That's why when it comes to game I keep it under 300 yards. That's my limit for game . Shooting paper I can go out too 750 yards .
I can shoot sub moa out to 300 yards .
I've never used a Bolt gun for hunting . I've always used a Match Grade Semi Auto .
My dad always told me be 1 gun hunter for all your hunting needs . So that's why I chose a 308 . Elk is the biggest sized game i shoot .
I can use it for my Known Distance Shooting Competitions out to 880 yards and use for game up to elk size with limitations. .
I've heard you say in other videos that you need 1800 pounds of energy to kill elk sized game . Looking at my ballistics for my 308WIN at the distances I've killed I believe it's right at 16 or 1700

Yo, as far as I am concerned, there are really only a few bullets that I truly trust. No 1. Winchester Ballistic tip. 150 gr. For my .308. Started out mid sixties, the old silver-tip. Soft aluminum point. Works very well these bullets. Punch through, hold together, kills instantly. Bullet no. 2 , Speers Nitrex 150gr. Grand slam. Both these in factory loads. I also reload with same bullets. With excellent results. One shot, one kill. To me, there are really no others. But, But , that’s just my opinion! the Hornady ELD match bullets are so thin that reloading them you need the proper bullet seater or the regular seater will ring and dent the bullet. Cut them open and the core falls out. Only for target use and very light critters. I use Speer HotCor with flat base. Never had an issue with these for hunting. I use the ELD's for paper only. Cutting open a bullet lengthwise is a good idea, a picture just does not do it.

Well sir, the problem I have is people shooting big game at 800- 1000 plus yards. The biggest culprits are the 6.5 Creedmoor crowd, no bullet or conventional hunting cartridge was designed to do that. A 22 long rifle will kill, it has killed man and beast, but no moron would shoot at a deer/ elk at 200 yards with a 22 LR but will shoot at a deer/ elk at 1000 yards plus with a 6.5 Creedmoor.

It's the liability issue with older receivers on old military firearms in those calibers. I have been shooting the 6.5x55 for nearly 20 years and at 2650fps it performs beautifully. I don't need 28-2900fps to kill a whitetail or hogs here in Texas.

This past rifle season on whitetails , I did try the Hornady ELD-x precision hunter 162gr. 7mm Rem mag. It killed the deer just fine 200 yard field shot on our farm but it made a mess. It's true you do have core separation there were pieces of lead core in the meat and I did recover the jacket. No core!! I won't be using them anymore especially for black bear and elk. I bought some 139 gr Accubonds for deer and 175gr partitions for bear. I'll use the eldx for woodchucks and ringing steal. I have worked up some accurate loads. I think it's time to raise hell to Hornady. I think they acader to PRS guys who compete. PRS requirements differ vastly from what hunters need. They use advertisement to bring new guys into the sport which is fine however they need to specifically market those whiz bang low drag bullets to competition shooters and not hunters. Don't be me and fall for their crap. I suggest as a new hunter listen to guys like Randy who have been around a long time. They will tell you how it is, what works and what doesn't. Do your homework research. I suggest if you can't find good factory ammo in your area I suggest start learning how to reload. That's the best way to get the most out of your rifle!

Heavier skinned game requires heavier bullets/larger calibers.....lighter skinned only requires smaller caliber/lighter thinner jacketed bullets. Also depending on the range the shot is taken. Pick your game/bullet construction accordingly. Basic rule of thumb is 1K Ft.lbs to hunt with. Problem is sometimes range can vary unless you know for sure the course of normal travel of certain game. I sectioned Hornady interlocks too.... the lighter weights smaller calibers have a weak interlock ring.... larger caliber ones have a larger ring. However.... some smaller caliber heavier weight bullets have a perfectly substantial locking ring, so it depends..........

I hunt deer/moose with two different groups and most of us own .204 rugers for coyotes and none of us use them for moose or deer. The smallest caliber anyone uses is 7mm-08. I know lots of hunters and none would spend the time or money applying for tags and taking time off to risk shooting a moose with a . 204. Just because you can doesn’t mean you will.

Chris Garman yo, good point Chris. Iam in mid northern Saskatchewan, been hearing lots of stories about these small caliber, new laws. It’s a bad joke with serious consequences on our wounded , left alone to die animals. ( that got away). Who ever made theses laws & people that past them , should go looking for a new line of work! If they don’t leave voluntarily, they should be fired!! Mugger Joe.

I look at it this way, if your not a sniper then stay within 250 yds. Just make a good clean kill, not a clown trying to juggle in wind, drop, barometric pressure and all that good stuff. Be smart and listen to Randy. I live in northern Minnesota and I have not shot a buck in over 5 years because I want a good clean shot. I love hunting but I also like watching wildlife. Like this afternoon when the snow let up a little. Opened up my front door to shovel my drive, where 3 deer in my front yard and was just talking to them. They were coming closer till my pups wanted to see them, then they just walked into the woods. There not stupid, they know danger. When they see you all the time and let them do there thing, they won't run. Every hunter should be out there with wildlife and learn from them.

Here's alot of the problem- Hornady and Berger do not make guns nor do they hunt anything outside of paper. This kind of crap didnt happen when the founder Hornady ran the show- but then his kid waited and waited for the reins to be handed to him and look what happened- I agree with you entirely. The old Inter-lok bullet is gone, which was a good bullet for whitetails and mulies...today's Inter-lok is a joke for hunting- fine for plinking and paper, but its not a hunting bullet. And Berger? LOL Berger is was and will always be a joke in my book of standards for hunting.

How are the newer InterLock bullets different from the older ones? Just curious because I was considering InterLock bullets for my new 308. Thank you for your time.
