Brighton Promettes (1956)

Brighton, Sussex.
The promettes are trainee models who are on duty at weekends in the summer, dressed like air hostesses, they offer advice and answer questions from tourists in Brighton.(The commentary begins "for those men among you who like girls with brains there's no place like Brighton for a holiday"). They are lined up in front of caravan which has "Brighton Promette Bureau" on it, to be inspected. They then gather round their supervisor before setting off. They leave in pairs. They come across a poor man who can't seem to hold a baby and use a telephone at the same time, so they offer to hold the child. Another pair come across a woman photographing her friends and they offer to take the photo for her. Back to the bloke in the phone box who takes his child back.
Group of tourists sitting on benches writing postcards and two promettes come up and offer to post their cards. (Commentary says that another rule is.... never approach a man and his wife or girlfriend you'll only get a dirty look from the woman and the man will be led off). M/S two promettes crossing the road to post the cards. C/U caravan which says "Ici on parle Francais" and "Si parla Italiano". A man wearing a beret (maybe French) is being directed by one of the promettes. Lastly we see the backs of two promettes walking away from the camera along the promenade (The commentary says the final rule - no dates!)

I lived in Brighton in 70s no promenades were there then.

l was 2yrs old but remember the Brighton of the 60's and 70's with happy memories of what was once a clean , well kept and vibrant and exciting town not the run down , dirty and neglected city it is now in 2024 .

The Greens have destroyed Brighton I wish I could of seen Brighton in this state for myself. But my earliest memory is pirates deep on the sea front.
