The infamous SSD, the raw patent troll, the ui lag, the impromptu shutdowns and finally the self gaslighting because you know deep inside that it will be a money sink. Congratulation, it's a fire camera, still one of the best actually (if you really need 4k otherwise I'd get a "vintage" Amira). edit: nvm just checked the used Amiras and they almost doubled in price since the last time I checked.
Honestly, for a proper big boy camera I was thinking a Canon C200 would be the best option. Either that, or just rigging out a S5iix. I don't want to spend $4k on a camera though unless I'm making $4k a week
Amira's are still widely used in documentary, TV, and indie film, but the same sensor can be had for a fraction of the cost in an Alexa Classic or XT. The downside is that the body only weighs in at about 7.5kg, so you'll spend quite a bit of the money you saved buying support gear like tripods that can actually take the load.
Yep Canon C200 good choice, Sony got great lattitude but I hate how they process noise, why not an Ursa though ? And I agree, today I can't see a better hybrid camera than the S5IIX.
@@DarkTrapStudio as an Ursa mini pro shooter that has shot alot with both C200's, C100's. FX6's, FS7's, R5C's, FX30's and much much more, the Ursa, atleast for my use, is by far the best choice, also much better performance in low light than the c200 and by far the best colorscience of the bunch.
I made $0 off of youtube last month, but I too also went out and spend £3000 on a RED Scarlet-W. Its beautiful! But I agree, you buy into it thinking "wow this is so cheap now" and then a 4" monitor costs you £800, a simple top handle costs £300, then storage costs £500 for 500GB which only lasts an hour or 2 of recording so you have to buy at least two. But then you need batteries which cost £400. And finally once you have spent all your money and your realising how broke you just made yourself you realise that you need even more storage on your PC.
Absolutely fascinated by your thought process on this one. Fair play for going out and buying what you want. But I was so surprised that you don't even shoot aRoll! Enjoy the RED, man. They are glorious machines.
Personally I would never recommend a pre-Komodo RED unless you're a working DoP who already knows it's many foibles. For a hobbiest or up-and-comer wanting to own a cinema camera, Canon's C300 MK2 is a good starting point, or alternatively an older Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K (the Pro is better but not essential). Even with those though, the cost of rigging is a major concern, I spent about 3.5x as much on accesssories as I did on my main production camera. And in truth, if you need something better than an URSA Mini it's probably better to just rent it in unless you're doing a ton of paid work with it.
Also that advertising plug is how it's done. Bravo. Glad ugreen is helping ya out. I've been buying their gear since they hit the market and were still in Ali. Solid brand imo.
If you don't want to keep it, i'd gladly take it :) . No seriously tho, this is the first video I saw of you and I like your humour, +1 sub! The 16 bit raw files might be overkill for RUclips... Pro RES 422 might be more usable by premiere and might save your sanity, you only then need to expose and white balance right. But really nice video!
Same exact experience using my S5 for everything but still needed a Scarlet-X for old time sake . Opted for a very very cheap rig setup from aliexpress: no electronics ef mount/Npf charger/and BM 12G Monitor to rec in BRAW. Does less than putting the monitor on the actual S5 and it's a pain the ass - but feels nicer for some stupid reason
If you want a fantastic, affordable Cinema camera that isn't a pain to work with, I highly recommend the C300 Mark II with either a Blackmagic video assist for braw or the atomos 7inch recorder that can do prores 422 (shinobi?). You get a 4K super 35 sensor with usable autofocus, internal NDs, and raw recording externally. It's only let down by it's 2K 60p (120p with crop) and now fairly dated internal recording formats. We still shoot with them all the time alongside arri amiras, pocket 6ks, and other canons and they hold up great. There are other amazing old cinema cameras that still produce fantastic images but they're normally difficult to work with now due to old proprietary media thats expensive and hard to find. Like the Sony f55, Panasonic varicam35, and alexa classic
@aChairLeg I haven't had any hands-on experience with the c200 but I know it's the same sensor. I think it's biggest advantage is also its biggest difficulty. You either have to work with 8-bit footage or a very heavy raw format that doesn't edit well. The 8 bit footage is still very good but limited, And the raw is very robust, but it's hard to playback and takes a lot of space. The C300 Mark II with external braw is a great stop gap. Very efficient file sizes while being easy to edit. You don't get the full raw controls in the braw panel, but the data is still there so if you adjust colors or exposure it's done non-destructively. That said you're dealing with more parts with the C300 when you have an external recorder and the annoying detachable XLR and screen. (I often run a scratch track to built in 3.5 mm mic jack and run canon's standalone touch screen from the c200) Ultimately I think you'd be happy with either. The c200 will probably slightly to handle and shoot with. The C300 will be easier to manage with file sizes, card swaps, and editing. I think the price difference is mostly negligible because the money you would save on a c200 would end up costing you in hard drives and cfast cards. I'm hoping to post a test between the C300, pocket 6K, and Arri amira soon.
You’re the first person I’ve seen recommend dsmc2 over dsmc1. Most of the used red community claims the 1s are significantly more reliable, largely because of the inherent instability that came with opening the module interface to third parties.
Ooo look at Mr Big Bucks RUclipsr here. He's forgotten his roots. Next he'll be buying a Porsche. 😮 Joking btw, this was a killer video - speaking as another camera nerd. Great purchase 😊 I currently use a Sony APC-C camera but I could imagine myself getting RED in a few years when I upgrade.
I just bought a Helium beginning of this year and after it died now I got a monstro just for fun. I think almost no camera is as good sensor wise as Monstro. Even not Alexa LF, only 35 :)
ah the old red mag storage cards... LTT had the same complaint about those back when they were still using RED cameras. iirc they did manage to get a regular mSATA SSD working, so that might be worth having a look at.
Honestly, why not buy a mirrorless camera ? There are great mirrorless cameras now that could easily match that raven for a much better affordable rate. You could have gone for a fx3/sIII or fx30, theyre great little cameras. There also nikon now, who has some overkill cameras with red luts and are just great. I am a Fuji guy, and i would choose my XH2s or even my XT3 any day, over that Raven. But i mean, you could also just want a red! I know the feeling... Its not the logical choice but its a choice and thats ok. Nice video btw
