It was pretty satisfying to see the train go visibly faster than the cars on the motorway throughout the trip. Sadly that's something you don't see very often in New Zealand.

Thank you very much for posting this video. I was moved to tears upon watching this, especially the section between Perth and Currambine because itt truly brought back my memories. I frequently traveled between Currambine (where I lived) to Joondalup and also Perth.
I was quite surprised to see that aside the fact that there is underground platform in Perth, now the Fremantle line is located to the left of Butler (then Joondalup) line.
The view between Perth until Joondalup Arena is largely unchanged since the last time I rode the train in 2002. There are difference such as the presence of storage track in Leederville, Greenwood station, modification at Edgewater station, and also repainting of some stations.
But the biggest shock has to be the major changes in Currambine and surrounding areas. I remember beyond Joondalup Arena, the track used to travel through the bush before arriving at old Currambine station (which was a terminus). However, now the whole place is surrounded by busy freeway!
Other than that, seeing the Joondalup station just like the way it was, and also Warwick station where I would normally catch the bus to Mirrabooka, really brought back the good memories of my stay in Perth and Australia.

Thanks very much for your kind words. I'm glad I can give you some nice memories.
In regards to changes to the line beyond Currambine, the freeway is soon to be extended again by about 5kms and within 2 years the rail line will extend all the way to Yanchep.

@@BennettBrookRailway, Perth has a really good train network while being so criminally underrated. I don't understand why the Australian media are focusing the hype on Sydney Metro, Sydney's double decker suburban trains, Melbourne's tram network and trams/ light rail expansions in general. I live in Adelaide where the South Australian government in 2015 - 2018 wants to propose a slow, expensive and useless radial tram network into Adelaide's inner to middle suburbs (see links below).
      Adelaide tram expansion links
      www.dpti.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/279809/AdeLINK_MCA_Summary_FINAL.pdf
      www.railexpress.com.au/albanese-backs-adelaide-tram-network/
Despite the fact that Perth and Brisbane have torn down their tram network, they're still doing ok without trams/ light rail. Adelaide doesn't need an expanded tram network on the streets. Trams (low floor) are essentially street trains with a crappier carriage, rock hard seating while being so expensive to operate (similar to high floor trains) with none of the capacity or frequency advantages of buses (in bus lanes with traffic light piority).

The Fremantle line was moved to the west of the Joondalup line so they could cram the Perth City Link tunnel on top of the Joondalup line tunnel (which curves northeast under Roe Street before curving back west to Perth Underground to give a wider turning radius, meaning the Fremantle line tunnel can’t simply dive east of it).

19:56. About a decade ago I used to live on this street next to the track in Wellard. I used to love seeing these trains roar past my house and was great to witness. It was cool also because I could listen out and hear track screeching and hissing to let me know that a train was approaching.

This section between Mandurah and Warnbro is where the Mandurah train hits the highest average speed and a top speed of 130 km/h for around 8 minutes. My Goodness!! Why the hell don't they increase the line speed?? The electric signalling system is relatively up to date. The tracks are in obviously very good shape with concrete sleepers and continuous welded rail. Much of this well planned line is very straight and the curves run at a very, very generous radius. The ride is very smooth. The trains have a design speed of 100 mph (B-series). So, why the fuck are they running at a maximum speed of only 80 mph?? They should AT LEAST try 90 mph. JESUS CHRIST!!! 😠

The B-series EMU trains on Perth's train network on well maintained track are capable of reaching 130 km/h as their safe maximum speed, and 160 km/h as their absolute (design) maximum speed. Operating an electric train at maximum speeds of 135 - 160 km/h between stations causes premature electrical motor wear, increased operating cost and maintenance cost while reducing the train's reliability.
