After 60 years of playing, I've become a fan of 'fill notes' and not necessarily the lead stuff. I learned that playing so much country music. Mark's technique of answering his vocals is unmatched,,he doesn't follow any rules playing minor or flat 7's in his answering isn't played by no one else. Definitely his OWN style and I don't think anything else would've made him the player he is today..He's one of my favorites. He's not a 'Scale' player.

Moreover: he gets the audience's attention BEFORE playing any note! 😂
Saw him a couple of years ago in Cologne (2010 Get Lucky tour), and the whole arena was holding their breath when he picked up the guitar, waiting for him to play that first tone.
So, speaking of ca. 12'000 people not making a single sound.
In regards to this video, I never liked those TV live recordings at all. Most of the times, his clean sound would be so uncompressed, you can really feel him struggle to make that guitar cry and sing - no sustain whatsoever.

CGP's that Chet awarded were to Marcel Dadi, John Knowles, Jerry Reed, Steve Wariner, and Tommy Emmanuel. Chet should have awarded one to Mark, as he marveled at his finger-style technique. 10 years following Chet's death in 2001, his family bestowed a CGP award to Paul Yandell, Chet's playing sidekick of many years. At that time, the family said no further CGP's would be awarded. Sadly, Paul passed away later that same year at age 76. In addition to Mark, IMHO, Chet (or his family) should have awarded CGP's to Richard Smith, Muriel Anderson, Martin Taylor, Jim Nichols, and Doyle Dykes.

Thank you for another fine analysis! The technical breakdown let me know where the sounds that I’ve been hearing come from. I would just like to add kudos to the drummer for keeping that musical mechanism nice and tight. I remember when that song first hit the airwaves and listeners were absolutely blown away.

I seem to write the same comments whenever I hear music from the 80s/90s: just high quality, tasteful, elegant, expressive, emotional, glamourous without being glamourous..... Unreached! Why is that not possible today? Thank you once again, Fil.

Another great analysis Fil! As a non-musician it's hard to tell exactly what he's doing at times. I believe also that Mark never gets the credit he deserves as a songwriter. What other musician has written songs about dead-end bar bands, Sonny Liston, a foot soldier in Napolean's ill-fated invasion of Russia, American auto racing.. the list of topics is crazy! Also, thanks to RUclipsrs for posting many of his awesome concerts, especially his apparent farewell tour from 2019. Rock!

Mark Knopfler came through Sky Blue Studios in Sonoma California in the late 70s. He was friends with Chris Hackney who owned the recording studio. Chris was always very proud of Mark because of his musical talent.
Mark was searching for a way to make it work. He visited with me at my mother's house. Mark played with Bob Dylan at the Marin Civic Center and Chris got free tickets.
I didn't get to go. C'est la vie

Thank you Fil for your generous analysis. You clearly are a skilled and experienced guitarist and amazing teacher.. I enjoy all your videos. I get so tired of "shredders" by musicians who think plucking notes on a fretboard is all skill and speed and calling it "music"....but has no heart or emotion, no connection. That is the genius of Mark's music. No extra notes, no showmanship, -just a man totally connected with his guitar and using it to express his heart.
Lucky for us that he was drawn to Hank Marvin's work and remains his idol. Love them both.

From the first time hearing Marks playing I loved his style. What is even more pleasing is watching other musicians reactions and admiration. Thanks for breaking down some of the technique and seeing your smile while enjoying the performance.
Another guitarist to check out is a Canadian, Colin James. “Sudden Stop” or “Why’d You Lie”are slower tunes, but great solos.
Thanks for all the great vids!

I've been reading the comments about how Knopfler seems bored or would rather be elsewhere. I wouldn't care if that was actually the case. Dire Straits, with the exception of a few songs, tended to be unassuming and laconic, almost introspective. This Mark Knopfler in this performance is still more stunning and interesting than so many other performers I could name.

There’s a sly smile at 16:55 here that shows Mark is having fun. Keep in mind this performance is something like 20 years after this song first came out. Yet he plays around with the music enough to really enjoy himself. The duet with the piano in the second half is totally new for me, yet fits the song perfectly.
I can’t think of many artists who continually reinterpret their own work the way Mark Knopfler does. For me, the ultimate example is “Romeo and Juliet” from the Real Live Roadrunning performance. That was more than 25 years after the original release of that song. The version from 1980 is great - an expressive young man. However, the 2006 version is a quantum leap forward. An older man with more life experience and an even greater ability to express himself with the guitar.

I’ve watched Mr. Knopfler‘s Guitar videos and he’s just amazing. I don’t recall the song he used to demonstrate but he was showing how while he strummed the melody with the fingers of his right hand he played his own rhythm accompaniment with his thumb and was picking with his left hand.

That's not Dire Straits, that's Mark's solo band. Richard Bennet, the 2nd guitarist has been a fixture with him on every tour since the mid 90s, and is very accomplished in his own right, I think he started with Neil Diamond back in the 70s and actually wrote the song Forever in Blue Jeans., and Glen Worf on Bass is terrific.

He and Vince Gill are in a league of their own. All these shredders say look at how fast I am. Mark and Vince say listen to the music. How does my guitar complement the music. Oh, I can play just as fast if I’m not listening to the music.
Chet Atkins called Mark Knopfler his favorite guitarist to play with. And back in the 80’s he tried to hire Vince into Dire Straits.
    Kindred souls.

His vocal is really on the lower end of a baritone almost a bass & he can sing damn good. He seems a bit laidback on his vocal on this performance, but man the dude can play some guitar for sure & is a hell of a songwriter & producer. I heard him say they used to try to make him use a pick in the studio, don't understand why? He's just a great guitar player almost impossible to pick up anything by watching him, his style is so unique. Clapton I can watch and pick up all kinds of things. Once again you got it right on. He also said that he stopped using a pick because he was breaking strings early on & could not afford it, and that he was a guitar teachers nightmare.lol. Great job again Fil. Peace, M.A.

    Hi Fil! :-)
It's fantastic how, looking at your expression, one can identify the very spots in which something particularly good is happening, even (or should I say "mostly"?) when it would be overlooked by a "casual listener"... I just LOVE your analysis. Unfortunately, I can't always watch your videos every day, and it's difficult to catch up... But I learn so much from you and your videos. Thank you for that.
Also, I really love the fact that you're so focused on the Beauty. You always underscore the GOOD stuff, the beauty one can find in what's going on in the video. :-)
You made me appreciate this song even more than I already did.
    Thank you again.
