Too true. I'm somewhat concerned that a teacher who's own job is to make sure children are successful and prepared for the real world, is looking down on someone who made it. Wow!
They might point to the fancy equipment, nifty blowers and nice mowers, and say, 'He couldn't have made it without those.'
A tool is only as good as the person who uses it.

What do you do for health insurance .. 401k ... retirement and so on ? I had a lawn
Service I did for 10 years but I also work in the union the last 20 years (and counting) . I don’t do many lawns anymore just cause I’m older now and just can’t do both jobs . but I always wondered what lawn owners that do it for a living do or think on the future ..

    Hey Stet!,
I totally understand the not going to college. I had 50 mowing Accounts pulling in a bout 15k a month. I had a ton of pressure from others to drop it all and go to college. I ended up not listening and kept on mowing. One thing I recommend for you is to think about more than just the money. Be sure you have benefits. Be able to take paid vacations. Be able to have health insurance.
Right now you don’t really have to think about these things because you are young and healthy. Just remember that if you want children some day you will want to have insurance for that labor or else you are gonna be paying up the ass with cash.
If you can grow your business large enough where you can give employee benefits then keep it up brotha! Just remember at some point benefits are going to become a necessity.
Your channel is pretty awesome and I am jealous of what you have accomplished at your age. Keep it up and grow that company!

We are the new wave... People who think "you" need collage are stuck in the past...College debt is a trap! Unless you want to be a Doctor , lawer etc. College is a waste. Good topic man I can defiantly relate!

    • @GrassNectar

@@lawnman3638 I agree college is defiantly what you make it. But my point was this- The times have changed and the information that was once only available through college can now be found without. The way money works is also changing but the system and the way most people think is still the same. In the "old money time" - jobs took care of you. Now not so much. The majority of people are getting screwed by the system - but this is a huge opportunity for people who think outside the box and find opportunity through entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

Kids today are told they can go to college get out and find a job that pays good where they don't have to work hard. The reality is that is a myth because those types of jobs are few and far between. Stetson you have something that is worth way more. Your willingness to work hard and common sense are worth 1000 times more than any book smarts. Like you said who is making more money is all that really matters. In the end being your own boss should be every ones goal in life.

Im going to college part time just for the learning part not for degree im taking a class about plant identification landscape design fertlizer and weed control and pruning and installing sprinklers all one class and a small engines class after that im done with college

I knew that I loved to work and I just had to find something that I was good at and also loved to do at the same time.. but I respect what you're doing man keep up the grind and you already know that it will pay off.. my name is AJ and you motivate me to get my lawn service off the ground, nice to meet you sir bless.

Just realize and appreciate the awesome position you're in. It's good that you have a mentor. Set yourself up; it's easy to blow money when you're young. You can invest just a fraction of what you'd spend on college, and you'll be in great shape. I can relate to the high school stuff; it was a blur, hated it.

Good vid man! I flunked out of college unfortunately, but joined the Army a year after since I wasn't doing anything too productive at the time. That led to me building experience in the IT industry, and I've been working IT for almost 20 years, counting my service. Lately, though, I've gotten tired of that, and really want to go full time in the lawn care industry. For now, it's a balancing act to work IT full time and lawn care part time, but you provide inspiration that I can make it happen for myself!

I'm in the same boat as you as I also graduated this year. I can't tell you how tired I am of people telling me I'm being a fool or "Im unfocused" for not going to college. I was going to attend a local college to take agricultural and small engine repair but both programs were canceled because of lack of participation. I feel college is not bad for everybody if you know it will help you in the future. For me when they canceled those programs there was no need for me go because why go there just so I can get a piece of paper that says I graduated with some random degree that I didn't need. I love what I do and I don't hate getting up in the mornings which why I want to pursue lawn care. I'm blessed to have a mom and dad that both are there to help me grow in my business and are very supportive. What I found that has helped me and would recommend to anyone, would be to work for someone that's been doing this business for years so you can learn and see from the employee's perspective and also learn what you can from the boss's perspective. This year I've been working with a gentleman that has been doing lawn care for 31 years and he has taught me so many things that many people that take agriculture courses would have paid thousands to learn. Put it in God's hands, be smart and it will work out in the end.

You and me both stet. I’m in eighth grade and you know I don’t hate school I just don’t prefer it. I already have the experience in what your doing. My dad has a company and I’ve learned so much working with him since I was like 6 or 7. I know how to mow with a walk behind , stand on ,and a zero turn and know how to weed eat and hedge trim, basically everything that a lawn and landscape professional would know. And I know I’m gonna need a side job to save up for it so I plan to work as a salesman for our local lawn and landscaping dealer. The owner said I already have a place considering the fact that if someone is in their to buy a weed eater, mower, blower, chainsaw and even hand tools sometimes. I would most likely know what would fit them best.

I used to be a teacher and I always encouraged students to look at what they wanted to do and find out how to make the best decision to achieve that goal. College was involved for a lot of kids, but so was tech/trade school and job experience. If you do well with your path, then this should be applauded. My hats off to you for having a successful business. You're also learning how to run it since you pay taxes (as I've seen in other videos) and have employees and other expenses. Keep up the good work.

I tried college when I got out of the Army, I didn't last one year. I ended up getting an apprenticeship as a welder for steel construction. I make a very good living as an Iron Worker for a steel construction company. A classmate of mine also skipped out on college and he himself started his own lawn care company. He does very well for himself too.
At our H.S. 25th reunion, I was amazed at how many of my classmates who went to college, got a degree of some sort, and found themselves working entry level jobs out of their field of study at 40+ years of age.
College isn't a guarantee to success. It can be, and has been for many, but it's also been a failure for many. People like us are meant to be outside, working with our hands, getting sweaty and dirty, and making good money because most consider that work "beneath" them.

I agree with your philosophy about college not being a necessity. First, it's crazy to think an 18yr old knows what he/she wants to do with their life already. Most of our goals then are money driven (not enjoyment driven). Society is too focused on how much $ a job can produce and not wether or not you will actually enjoy going to work!! I noticed you did mention how you possibly made more in just the summer than she did all year, but my main question is, did you enjoy your summer? If you enjoy what you do and get paid well, then it's total value cannot be measured by just dollar signs. I will say I am impressed by your professionalism in your videos and look forward to see your video updates to come.

Hey Stet, why don't you swing by your old high school one day and pay her a visit. I'm sure she'll want to know how you're doing since you didn't go to collage. Then you can tell her all about your lawn care business and all the success you've had and all the money you've made. I used to rent a house many years ago and there was this young collage student who used to cut my grass. He told me that even after he finished collage he was still going to keep his lawn care business because of all the money he was making. That should tell you something.

Frustrated that I can't triple like this video! Studied animal science for 4 years in college with the "grand plan" of becoming a veterinarian. That didn't play-out the way I thought (carried a 3.7 cumulative GPA fyi), so I've spent the last 10 years finding my career path before realizing the lawncare business was staring me right in face for 7 of those years, just waiting for me to return the attention. I'm envious of your vision, but at the same time, using your (and others') experiences/RUclips channels to play catchup and build my little empire. Side bar: really tough to do once you have a "9-5" and bills to pay, in terms of building enough that's manageable for after-hours, before making a clean break from "THE MAN". Carry-on Stetson! I enjoy your insight/ perspective and screw the haters. #fuelformymower

Stet, During my freshman year of high school I learned guitar. By sophomore year I was in already in several bands. By junior year I was done with school. I always hated it and knew I didn't belong in that environment and could learn anything I wanted, when I wanted. I was playing shows with one main band. Wasn't really making any money but I knew I never wanted to go to college , even music school because by that point I was already self-taught and better than people who had been playing 10 times as long as me. I knew even if I didn't make any money I would do whatever I needed to do to continue playing music as much as I wanted and just learn what I need for life along the way. A lot has happened since that time, but you will shape your own life, your own destiny and your own future. No teacher, counselor, principal, family member, friend, or anyone can determine that for you. Congrats on making your own path and sticking to it.

I always tell younger people tho stay in school school gives u options not everyone can be self employed or cope with manual work .

ive been a teacher for 34 years, but i was one of those who didnt believe you had to go to college to be successful. I always, told my students, find something you like, and do it. Anyone who tells you, you have to go to college to be successful is a fool. Those people that do that are usually the academics that think degrees measure intelligence, and success and that is just foolishness. Find your passion and do it. I have new passion, and thats lawn care. Im going full time this spring, no more teaching, and I cant wait.

I am very similar to you. However, I have always done both the teaching and lawn care. This is my 12th year of teaching physical education. About my 16th year in lawn care. I do the lawn care on the side however it is basically a full time job. I actually bring in more money doing the lawn care than the teaching. I totally agree, find what your passion is and do it. I actually think more individuals need to go into trades like plumbing, electricians, lawn care etc. It doesn't always have to be college, but it should be always trying to future your knowledge about what you are doing.

I didn't graduate college. However, with hard work I make over $100,000 a year. I'm a blue collar worker and work in manufacturing. You don't need college for everything. Hard work and dedication is all you need. Being persistent. Don't let other's tell you otherwise. What you described about High school was similar to my experience. I hated it, I had a hard time with all the social things you had to do to fit in ,etc. You're doing good keep it up. Not everyone needs to go to college. Stay true to who you are. You have a good attitude, that skill is not taught it's from inside you. Greetings from Everett Washington

First, I want to say, Congratulation on your success! I have been teaching for 17 years. I began to do Lawn Care over the summer just part time and I love it. I teach in an urban setting and the majority of our students do not go to college. I am a firm believer that college is not for everyone, in fact, many people who become successful entrepreneur do very well in life without a college degree. I always encourage my students to get as much education as possible, however, a High School diploma or a GED should be a must have for my students and others. I am also realistic with my students and I let them know that a college education does not determine their success or happiness in life. I tell them that they have many other options besides college to be successful in life. Keep up the wonderful work! This year, I am going to start a RUclips Lawn care Chanel ! Hey, you never know, maybe some day we can do a video together doing lawn care! I would love to quit my job in three years and go fulltime doing Lawn Care! My clients are always happy to see a female doing this type of work. Anyhow, I will continue to watch your videos! Keep up the good job!

There is nothing wrong with not going to college. I worked 3 jobs every summer while other kids were at the lake or whatever, so that I could make enough to not work during school year (Played 5 sports)
    Typical day
I woke at 5am to start painting houses at dawn
11 am Left to go work lunch shift at a cafe (good tips, all cash, 12 hrs weekly)
1pm back to painting houses till 4 or 5pm (40-48 hrs weekly)
5-10 pm worked part time at a convenience store (25-30 hrs weekly)
You know what that taught me, HARD Work and good work ethic. I went to college, but dropped out to take a skilled trades apprenticeship. NO DEBT and making money day 1. 20 years later, and I am still at it making six figures while all those kids with leisure study degrees are living at their parents house. I went back to college and have a degree now, but work payed for it, LOL. College is not for everyone.

I didn't go to college, it just wasn't for me. I did the vocational tech classes. My parents would tell me how I wouldn't do good in life and how much better my brother would be. Years later and I own a restaurant working only 30 hours and 5 rental properties (passive income) and my brother who use to tell me I would probably be only a line cook my whole life, is currently only making 16 dollars an hour and working 60 hours a week and working to survive while still paying off his 100k loan. Same people who use to talk that smack are the same ones riding a bike to work. STAY HUMBLE

But then i found a job in hydraulic engineering and loved it, well a high school reunion come along and my wife and i attended, this high school vice principal was there who hated me come over to ask me how my life is going thinking i was just a fuck up, well it just happened that i had a paycheck in my wallet that i hadn't deposited yet and showed him, his arrogant jaw dropped to the floor and he walk away with me telling him to quit being a lazy fucker and get a mans job. 👍🍻
