Dyson's price tag comes with the R&D that went into creating the product, so naturally Shark can come in for better value for money since they don't have that overhead. The "copying" thing shouldn't bother anyone. If that were the case nothing on earth would have competitors. There would only be one brand of everything (whitening toothpaste, microwaves, medications, you name it), which means they could charge us as the consumer whatever they wanted. And Dyson have.....until now lol.

Exactly, well said! I can’t wait for the same thing to happen with the RevAir when the patents have expired so that more brands can offer similar tech/products in other countries
reason also why shark can provide cheaper price cos all of their products are manufactured in China whereas Dyson not
I prefer my Shark vaccum than my previous Dyson one so I'm really interested to see what they're doing with this. Tbh its kind of amazing its taken this long for another company to dupe the Dyson hair range. Dyson have done amazing work for Shark in preparing us for a very high price tag that most of us will hear the £299 price tag and think its a great deal which in comparison to Dyson it is but in the grand scheme its still way higher than I think most of us ever thought we'd pay for a hair tool

Really interesting review Fleur! Glad the technology is moving forward and getting cheaper! One thing I've noticed over time of watching hair tool reviews is that it totally depends on your hair type how something is going to work for you. My hair is naturally thin and curly (frizz is ridiculous!) but love how it looks blow dried. The airwrap was a game changer for me and I especially love that is not too hot as I find so many hairdryers burn my scalp. My hair quality has definitely improved since I bought it.

I’ve had the dyson for 2.5 years and haven’t used any other tool since. I have very long thick hair and I love it. I do think the hairdryer is powerful enough. I love the fact it doesn’t use excessive heat
Right my hair feels soooo much better than whn id dry hair with my ghd air dryer like that makes my hair feel grosssss conpared to dyson I was so SHOCKED bcs I was a die hard ghd airdryer fan

I have heard people say that the bottom two heat settings of the shark are about equal to the dyson, so if someone wanted it that cool it is possible, but the extra heat setting is also nice if you want that. Also I feel like the price of the shark is very reasonable because that is easily what is would cost to buy a decent quality hairdryer, straightener, and curling iron, plus it saves space
Is it just me or is the hair done by the dyson air wrap side glossier than the shark side? Great review nonetheless! ❤

I have had a Dyson since the first Xmas they came out but I think the 2 x brush attachments on the Dyson are soooo underrated- I use the flat ones to blow dry straight, the round brush for a lovely shaped blow dry. I get on with them better than the barrels!
Same! The barrels were the draw for me but I use them so little. On the other hand, they do a fantastic job of curling/waving the very fine, silky hair of a friend of mine, and they last better than other curls on her hair.
Everyone has a different experience I suppose!

Back this past June, I bought the latest Dyson and I absolutely love it! I love the Dyson product so much that I went out and bought the Dyson blow dryer and then I saw a shark a similar one so I had both and decided they were too similar for me to justify a higher price point so I returned my Dyson and I’ve been loving my shark ever since. now that this has come out, I’m kicking myself because it seemed only to be a natural progression shark is on Dyson’s heals. I do prefer the brushes that come with the Dyson which I use 90% of the time so I’m very happy with my Dyson and I’m hoping over all this will be the air wrap that I buy once and then I have it forever . it will be interesting over time to see how long each lasts

If it makes you feel better, at some point innovation always has to be copied for it to get better… someone created a hairdryer and now hundreds of brands make their own. Someone created the curling wand, now it’s available from so many brands. At their core, they’re all the same thing.
Innovation is rare nowadays, but the only way innovations get better is by other brands getting involved, whether it’s the hair industry or any other, competition leads to improvements. We’re just not used to seeing “new” things anymore ☺️ (I work in tech haha)

I didn't know the Shark but I really appreciated the review Fleur, thanks! Here I bought the One Step from Revlon and I really enjoy it so far! I could never get a nice blow-dry with volume on my wavy hair before, but now I do!

Thanks so much for this review Fleur, the Shark sounds really good. I have the Airwrap and love it (I have mid length, fine, highlighted hair) and use the Airwrap regularly. Recently I was at the hairdressers and she said my hair is in much better condition which I'm putting down to the Airwrap. However if it broke I'd be tempted to buy the Shark!

The air wrap doesn’t have a diffuser, which is massive for us curly haired people. I’ve asked them multiple times if they’re adding one over the years and always been ignored. It’s a point of contention for me, I’ve often felt my mixed Afro/Caucasian hair type is excluded
It's such a shame - they introduced one for the supersonic hair dryer a few years ago, but still not for the airwrap - hopefully it's coming!

I see the Dyson as an investment in my hair health because it’s so much less damaging. I can’t believe the difference in the look and feel in my hair after 6 months of using it. Does the Shark get hot enough that you think it will cause damage?
Interested to know this as well! If it heats up more, I wonder if it damages!
I mean… I’m not a hair scientist but I think yes probably… however you could always put it on the lower heat setting if you were worried about that! If you have and love the dyson already you certainly don’t need this, but I think it’s a fantastic option for those who don’t want to/can’t afford to drop £479 on the dyson :) xxx
I'm a US dyson airwrap user and have friends in the UK who have come over and tried mine and said that mine is much more powerful than theirs. I always thought it was a fluke like her dyson airwrap just was slightly defective or something but now I wonder if the UK ones have a larger issue of being not as strong.
Just adding that because I find my airwrap to be pretty strong on the regular blowdry attachment!

Looking at your hair by initial thought was the shark curls looked better. But the more I watch the more shiny and healthier the Dyson side looks 👍🏻

The Shark dupe is mow available at Boots. I love my Airwrap which was a Xmas present. I use the hairdryer and smoothing brush attachments all the time. I have got the flyaway attachment now but that’s still a work in progress.

I am from the US and am so sad that we don't have the option for the black unit and it doesn't come with a case. I noticed at a UK retailer it came with a free case. The only option we have is a neutral silver/beige color.
Their package also comes with all 5 attachments too. I'm wondering if I should wait to see if the black will release in the US. I like it so much better.

For me the hair damage is important as I have thin hair and before dyson I was afraid to style my hair with straighteners, dryers or curlers. So even tho the shark one holds the style better its like I'm using a curling iron, so then I would just use that if it werent for the damage, but the curls staying fully in shape

I’m terms of picking up the hair your button at the bottom is flashing on the dyson if you clean the filter it will pick the hair up better.
I think the sensor is faulty on mine as the filter is clean, I cleaned it right before filming this!
The Dyson side looks like a smooth, professional blowout and hair looks healthier. I ended up purchasing the Air wrap through Dyson today and got a $120 discount by purchasing over the phone.
I’m definitely going to wait a while and get the Shark. I imagine the price will reduce or there will be a special offer around Christmas / January sales. Great review thanks 🙏🏻
It won’t go on sale, the dyson air wrap was sold out last Christmas, this year the shark will be the ‘it’ present and sell out… they won’t put it on sale when it will sell out at full price
I like the review. However the main thing to remember about the Dyson one is that it causes less damage to the hair than anything else. That’s why the curls won’t stay as long and the dryer takes longer to dry hair.

I have to agree on the fact that the dyson is great for fine hair and can make styles last days when used on fine hair (personal experience).

I have heard that the new Dyson attachments fit the old Dyson.
I had the dyson and ended up returning it after 3 weeks of trying it.
My hair is similar to yours and the style never stayed in. By the time I’d done my whole head, the curls had already dropped out so I’d have to go over it again and it took wayyy longer to dry and style my hair than it did just using my the dryer and a curling tong.
It also left my hair really frizzy and feeling dry.
I’d seen other people saying you needed all these hair products to keep the style in but I literally don’t need anything other than heat spray if I used a hair dryer and curler so the dyson just seemed inconvenient for me tbh.
But I’m curious to use the shark to see how it would compare on my hair!

Is it dual voltage? That is my biggest gripe with the Dyson air wrap for such a hefty price, you can’t even take it on vacations unless you’re going to a country with the same voltage.

Great review. I have watched some of the American reviews and I prefer UK ones as our electric is a higher wattage than the US, so I often wonder if you can rely on them. Been on the fence for a Dyson so really tempted by this.

I had such a bad experience with my dyson. I have thick hair and didn’t understand why I needed to buy a $400 hair dryer to curl my hair with the airwrap - a $500 machine. All for “healthy hair”?
I have both. The shark barrels are great (better than Dyson) but the Shark dual bristle brushes will destroy your hair. Worse than the Revlon one step brush. You'll notice the damage after several weeks. Dyson brushes are much more gentle and use coanda technology.
I thought the shark also uses coanda technology aswell?

I have to say I totally disagree and think it's about time somebody copied the Dyson Airwrap- somebody had to....the price of that thing is absolutely obscene!! This is coming from somebody who could afford it aswell. I owned one about a year ago and it was shocking. Like you say, the quality of the smoothing brushes were terrible. The main reason I bought it was because of the round brush and coanda curling attachments, however the round brush kept falling off it after about a month (I think my hair was too thick for it) which says a lot as my hair isn't even coarse, just on the thicker side of 'normal', the curls from the tong attachments just would not hold. The hairdryer was weak and awful. I thought it was such a great idea, but in practice I was really disappointed in Dyson's offering and am SO glad someone else has created a more powerful version at a more reasonable price! P.S. this doesn't even cover the awful customer service from Dyson when I requested a replacement round brush attachment and despite chasing them and being promised a new attachment numerous times it NEVER arrived.
Not meaning to be rude, and this is possibly completely presumptuous, but maybe you would be less concerned about Dyson having a competitor if your Airwrap wasn't gifted.
Omg my brushes keep falling off too after a year of having it. I have a little knot and the brush goes flying off.

bout the heat, like you said, i guess that's one of the reason why dyson is less hoter than the shark as dyson designed to not to damage your hair, so well... also in terms of price, shark can make it cheaper as all of their products are manufactured in China plus lets not forget dyson invest lots of money on research team to be innovative so.

Great review and comparison. I have fine shortish menopausal hair and use the dyson airwrap as my hairdryer too, so cost wise it’s not too bad overall. Would love a diffuser attachment as my hair seems to be taking on more of a curl these days too.

Since Dyson refuses to ever have any type of sales (not even for Black Friday), I’ll be purchasing the Shark. It’s their loss!!
My dyson brocke exactly 3 months after the end of the guarantee. Dyson itself only offered to fix it for 125 euros, and they were quite very impolite when I said that I think that this is a complete joke for a hair drier priced over 400 euros. So honestly, I would not recommend buying it...
I wonder if the newer version of the dyson would compete better with the results of the shark? (Other than for the extra features you stated)

To be honest, the fact that the shark is such a hype now but not avalible in most of the world is really annoying me… so as a dutchie, i have no choice to go for the dyson
Don't think it's really fair to review one product that is probably a few years old, against a brand new product. You should have reviewed the new version of the Airwrap against the Shark version. For example, the Dyson hairdryer attachment that you used in your example, they don't even make anymore and they have it integrated with a smoothing tool now. They've also altered other areas of its design and accessories. You are however, basing your review on the older tools and your experience from the past few years, which isn't accurate. Anything that has just been released is going to have an upper hand, especially when it comes to tech based products.

Revlon did come out with a cheap brush blow dryer and it fried the hell out of my hair! Lol
