Bombay to Mithapur by Saurashtra Mail - Part 1 (July 1992)

- Опубликовано: 19 окт 2024
- After returning to Bombay from my honeymoon trip, it was time to visit my wife's hometown - Mithapur. Accordingly, we booked a non-AC First Class Coupe on the Saurashtra Mail. I was looking forward to enjoying the Vadodara-Ahmedabad-Rajkot-Mithapur section for the first time. Back then, WCAM1s, WAM4s and WDM2s ruled the WR BG sections. Be sure to enjoy the following:
Halts at Palghar, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Viramgam
Brutal overtake by Frontier Mail at Valsad
Skips of Dahanu Road and Navsari
WAM4s with cool liveries at Ahmedabad
Steam loco shunting an MG rake at Ahmedabad
YDM3-hauled MG train (in cream-blue livery) racing a BG train
MG Suryanagri express (in cream-red livery) on Sabarmati bridge
The vast yards at Vadodara and Sabarmati
Track sounds are too good. Waiting for the next part sir :)
Where have these track sounds gone? Part 2 on the way :-)
Superb Compilation!
2.5 hrs to Palghar & almost 3 hrs to Dahanu rd, this really takes one back in time; especially considering that in today's world, Fast locals do it in lesser duration!
Thanks! I think the Mail used to get additional coaches at Dadar. Will have to check my TT.
Great video sir.whata era of 90s pure and fresh air less population and more humanity were exist coz of you i could see how 90s people and 90s Era.my DOB is 17 june 1995

Wow amazing to see once again the captures of 90s era😍😍😍2 month baby at the time of this video sir...
Glad you enjoyed :-)
Yes sir I thoroughly enjoyed it
Zabardast 👍👍👍
A legend traveller. It feels very good to see all those old railway videos. U were a hard core railway fan i must say. Thanks for sharing for all those good videos. Looking forward for more opd stuff. But do you have inside videos of train also then please post it.
Thanks! I do take interior sometimes but not often.
Lovely journey. I’m watching the video as I write this message..lol. I travelled by this train once from Surendranagar to Vadodara back in 1979-80. Great to see you posting these terrific videos.👌👌👍👍👍
Oh, nice. How was your trip?
@@ManiVijay It was a short trip but a lot of fun. Back then we lived in Vadodara (I grew up there) and had gone to attend one of my cousin's engagement in Surendranagar. That was the only time I travelled on Saurashtra Mail.
@@sanjayd411 Nice. I got a chance to live in Baroda for a couple of days last year when I attended the IRFCA convention for the first time. A nice city!
Another treasure. the track sounds, loco colors, liveries, coach colors ,liveries, goods wagons etc,etc took me to the 90s. Golden era. This video induces my 90s memories. Thank you sir.
Awaiting for the remaining parts.
Glad you enjoyed. Part 2 will be uploaded in day or two :-)
Channels like your's is why I love RUclips. Really unique.
Thanks a lot!
Pleasant memories. I was 10 years old at that time.
Very nostalgic, indeed!
@@ManiVijay us time ka baat he kuch aur tha.
You tube came in 21st century and so the vlogging, but you are the train vlogger of India since 20th century 😀😀
When I started taking videos, I had no idea I would be sharing these one day online :-)
@@ManiVijay thanxs to you tube, which provided the platform so you can share the wonderful videos with us and we can watch it
😊
The alco horn sound is so fascinating....
Fantastic !
I can infer the following from the video -
1) 5 Down Mail despite leaving so early from BCT had a late arrival at ADI . And the scheduled halts at the stations also seemed to be huge - 5 mins , 10 mins and even 20 mins at Valsad . Was the section under Absolute Block Section ? Need to ask Khalid Sir .
2) No Vapi and Nadiad halt ?
3) The openers sliding over Banta wali bottles and creating the sweet music made me nostalgic .
4) Ahmedabad Platform No.2 still remains the same . It can hold two trains at a time back to back . However I have not noticed the Scissors Crossover now . Need to look when I visit the place again .
4) Lokshakti - Ahmedabad Janata .
5) MG Suryanagari and MG rake before Suryanagari .
6) SBI was electrified even in those days ( I had this misconception ) .
7) Also I came to know few days ago that ADI-VGM was also Double Line during that time . VGM means the start of Single Line section .
8) Lovely sightings of WAM-4 and WCAM - 1 .
9) How long was 5 Down ? WDM-2 was not at all huffing and puffing with lets say a 20 coacher Mail . Single WDM-2 does the best with a 12 coacher rake .
10) Some diesel train ( loco unknown ) before Surat .
Inputs from you and others to observations welcome . Lovely video . Enjoyed it .
Great observations. My comments:
1) I remember seeing the Mail's departure postponed so that it left MMCT just after Frontier Mail. This way, overtake was eliminated.
2) Mail used to skip Vapi in Dn for a long time. I think it still skipped in 1992. But Up always halted at Vapi. Unfortunately, I couldn't capture the skip. Missed Nadiad as well. Was so sleep depraved after Anand that I had to doze off :-)
3) Same here.
4) Observed the same last year. But am not am sure about the scissors crossing. Will check my videos again.
5) The capture of those MG trains made my day, especially Suryanagri. The cream-blue one could have been Shetrunji.
6) The electrification of Virar-Sabarmati was taken up as one project (I believe it was completed in 1973)
7) Yes, double-line existed till VGM for a long time.
8) Badly missing the WCAM1 and WAM4.
9) I believe the train had 17 coaches.
10) That was an Elec-hauled train.
@@ManiVijay Sir The Shetrunji Express . Oh Man . BVC - ADI cracker train it was . When I saw it's 2000 T.T. an year ago I was shocked . The current BVC-BDTS S.F. is a bit closer to Shetrunji Express but still gives a less average than the MG counterpart . I also remember another train named Pink City Express . When I saw the TT , a chill ran down my spine . BG is not even close to the MG Express . I expected many a times that the BG couterparts should be faster than MG ones . But these two were exceptions . Any other exceptions ?
--> 17 coach train ? How many coaches would consist the RJT part ( VRVL was a MG so Slip portion was terminated at RJT . I remember we talked about it during when I came to see you off at BCT ) ?
@@siddheshsharma22945 Those were legendary MG trains with cracking runs and unique liveries. Even the MG Vaigai was faster than its BG counterpart. Also, BG runs in the Miraj-SBC section are pretty much what MG was. More examples including MG Ashram, etc.
Thanks for upload 1992
Enjoy :-)
How fast have the WCAM 1 and WAM4 disappeared in Mumbai Ahmedabad section! Wappies all round. 27 year before video! Hats off sir! I'm still 17! Exactly 10 years before I was born! (July '02). 2000's Kids will never know this if u didnt show us these golden memories down the lane... All legendary trains are seen. Where are the normal ones. How quaint, dark were the stations at night! WAM,WCAM and WDM 2 Were the workhorses of IR until recently EMD's and Wappies took charge!
May Semaphores remain in and around Okha-Rajkot!
I agree. Didn't realize that WCAM1 and WAM4 will disappear one day, just took them for granted.
Non Superfast and Mail/Express trains must only get WCAM 1 or WAM 4. Only Superfast trains must get WCAM2P/3 Or WAP locos. Among WAPs, only LHB trains should get the WAP5/7. Non LHB superfast trains must only get WAP1/4 or WCAM2P/3. Rajdhani/Shatabdi or any LHB superfast trains must only get WAP 5/7. Rest all other Non-superfast, mail/express and Non-LHB trains must only get WAM 4 or WCAM 1. That's how it must actually be.
Can you please describe regarding how shall I really differentiate a between WAM 4 and WDM locomotive in terms of Shape ? How shall I describe WDM and WAM 4 loco in one word in terms of shape ? Please help.
Describing a WAP locomotive is very simple; aerodynamic shape.
Describing an NDM/ZDM locomotive is also simple; Cab headed shaped.
But how shall I describe a WDM loco and a WAM 4 loco in terms of shape in one word ?
Please help me regarding differentiating a WDM loco and a WAM 4 loco in terms of shape.
Last 16160 loco nice number sir now a days we are seeing only WDP4D in diesel & WAP7 & WAP4 in electric South
True. Those majestic locos are gone.
@@ManiVijay sir pls upload 90s South trains video
@@charanrfgooty Will do. I have a bunch from South.
@@ManiVijay tq sir pls upload
Wow! Another awesome gem from the past! The train that momentarily stood next to you in ADI probably endured chain pulling, before berthing at the platform. And what beautiful MG rakes!
I also thought the same thing going by the honking pattern of the loco. Why would someone pull the chain when the train is not even berthed on a platform, seems strange. Those MG trains were grand, I agree.
When the train entered the station, it was initially between two platforms. A passenger due to alight may have thought that the train was skipping ADI, and jumped to action...just my far flung guess :-)
Woowwwww I was watching all of your videos and really enjoying and seeing the old locomotives coaches and all the infrastructure
Really,,,you are father of railfanning
God bless you 🙏❤
Thank you for your kind feedback.
I have travelled by this train for 43 years. Seen the conversion from MG to BG and from Steam to Diesel locos. Electric loco was from Ahmedabad even in the early 70s.
Sir I truly appreciate all your train vdo which you have posted on RUclips. Got to see some old Diesel engines which once I had seen in my childhood. Great work sir and that too with vdo camera available in those days
Rgds
Again a memorable gem ..... Great video again ...sir
Thanks!
People still hang on doors in those days (intro)
3 questions for u sir -
1 - which cam u used in those times?
2 - how the videos didn't corrupt from the time it was filmed
3 - how u still remember trains names (crossing, overtake, platform) since I guess many of the trains timings have been changed
The hanging outside the doors was on suburban trains (MG ones in my video). My answers:
1. I had a SONY Hi8 Analog Camcorder - almost three times the size of what I have now.
2. I have kept the VHS tapes in a safe place away from sunlight and magnetic sources.
3. I have been following timetables as far as I can remember. That's probably why I remember the train names.
Old is gold 🏆
Very true!
Indeed.💎
A YDM4 with ICF Rajdhani livery hauling ICF Rajdhani livery coaches on MG! I am totally geeking out right now!
MG Suryanagri was quite an amazing train - just two halts at Pali Marwar and Abu Road.
@@ManiVijay
Wow, this is new information for me. I wish I could have travelled in it but I wasn't born then.
These are really gem of videos thanks for sharing
Bcoz of my father who was in railways I had the opportunity of traveling in every kind of train coaches in India including enginees.
That's just great!
ADI was a big MG station. Lots of MG passenger trains between ADI and Mahesana hauled by YP and YG steam locomotives. Many of these were manufactured by Tata. Saurashtra was MG except for the Viramgam- Okha- Porbander. Tata Chemicals had it's own siding at Mithapur with Diesel Shunters.
Yes. My wife grew up in Mithapur, so I have visited that place. Gujarat was an MG paradise. Sad that MG is all but gone from there.
Now the frontier mail has about 33 halts. How many did it have back then? I would also appreciate if you could list the halts. Btw, great video sir!
It had 30 halts back then, so it is one train that has not been subjected to halt dumping. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Wow cool looking WAM 4 and there that haunted horn of WDM2 in the background. Which always haunts me.
That WDM2 horn was so good. They don't make horns like that anymore.
Nice collection Sir ji thanks for such videos. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Glad you enjoyed!!!
During my childhood, I ones travelled by the MG Girnar Express with the same unique livery; as seen in this vedio. I just felt it's loco like a WCAM1 during that time. I really always wondered so why ?
But from this vedio of your's; regarding the MG Girnar express, I think maybe the
Box-Cabbed design of the frontside of the YDM loco; of that MG Girnar express,
made me felt/looked like that so.
Also, I was very small during time, and while I was boarding the train; I was in my Father/Mother's lap, and the boarding time was
very early morning.
Very nice Compilation. Reminds me of my travel those days
Thanks!
I think you are the first railway vloger...best videos refreshing old memories...

If some more Box cabbed YDM locos really can be shown, I will really love and admire it.
ticket price on that time?
MG Suryanagari Express had a RSA with MG Ashram Express from Delhi to Ahmedabad. Ashram was the fastest MG train on the Delhi- Ahmedabad route and took only 17 hours.
Those were the glory days of MG superfasts. Ashram used to run combined with Mandor between Phulera and Delhi and, hence, used to get twin-diesels in that section. Pink City was the first superfast train to be introduced in WR between Delhi and Jaipur.
Where u have been...one of ur die hard fan...u are father of Indian railfaining

@@ManiVijay mention not
Sir do you have any old 90' s videos of traveling through Kerala...
Unfortunately, no. I did travel in Kerala in 2000 and 2007. You might have seen those videos.
In 1992 my dad joins the railway as a locopilot
Oh, great. Which route did he work on? Is he still active?

Mani Sir any video of west Bengal steam engine...As a kid I remember last it was operation somewhere around 1991
There was Gujarat Express, Gujarat Janta Express, Gujarat Mail, Saurashtra Express, Saurashtra Janta Express & Saurashtra Mail, only Gujarat Janta named changed to Lokshakti express, correct me if I am wrong
In this vedio, I observed MG Girnar express in unique livery. But the frontside of it's YDM loco, is boxed Cabbed shape in such way, that by seeing it's design, one will just feel the
loco of the MG Girnar express, as an Electric Loco.
Which camera you use for shoot??
I had a Sony Analog Hi8 camcorder.
Wow, amazing track sounds.
We miss those so much, right?
@@ManiVijay Sure we do
I want to go back in this time 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Me too. I badly miss the IR of the 70s to 90s.
What train is shown in this vedio which is been hauled by a Sky-Navy combo Blue colored WAM 4 through Ahmedabad with a Rajdhani liveried Guard coach in the end; while saurashtra mail is at hault in Ahmedabad. Which is that train ??
It was some passenger train. That deep blue-light blue WAM4 is one of my favorite liveries and was homed in at BRC shed.
Maybe Anand-Ahmedabad passenger most probably
This loco can be easily confused with the Deep Blue-Light Blue WCAM 1
Which cam did you use in those times??
YDM3 at 31:11 is one of the least seen locomotives in India. Made by North British locomotive company while her sister YDM 4 was made my Canadian Locomotive Works Montreal later made by DLW Varanasi.
BTW western railway used another class of steam locomotive YL class not found else where in India.
Very true! This is probably my only video of a YDM3.
western railway king
1980 to 2013:- WCAM 1
2014: to present:- WAP 7
WCAM2 ke saath bi dekha hai usko
Haan. WCAM1 followed by WCAM2, then the AC locos took over.

Like the Box cabbed YDM's, I think and I feel; all the WDM loco's must also be designed with providing them Dual Box-Cabbed shape; on both the sides of the WDM's.
Also one of the WDM has already been very recently converted into an electric loco; by the Diesel Locomotive works at Varanasi very recently. Along with that, the Indian railway is also planning, to covert all the remaining Diesel locomotives into Electric Locomotives; in place of abandoning them.
In that case, I really think and feel that, not only the Indian railway should convert those WDM's; into electric locomotives; by installing the neccessary pantographs and other things, also what I feel, those WDM's should also be provided with; Dual Box-Cabbed shape on both the sides; by giving the WDM's just a WAM-4 type look.
I don't think this will be very much expensive; regarding just changing the shapes of those WDM's; by providing them with Dual Box-Cabbed shape on both their sides; in place of their conventional Long-Hood shapes.
Even the Diesel loco's in Srilanka and Cambodia, exactly have dual box-cabbed shape design; on both of their sides. By Seeing those loco's, one can never ever feel as if they are Diesel loco's; even if they are actually Diesel loco's. Those Diesel loco's ditto resemble the WAM-4; just minus the pantographs and other neccessary equipments; required to be installed in the Electric loco.
So what I feel, all the WDM loco's; which are operating, their designs must be immediately changed; by replacing their traditional long Hood-shapes, with a nice Dual Box-Cabbed shape design; on their both sides, by providing those WDM's with a ditto WAM-4 type look.
Then even the Diesel hauled trains would be looking nice and can be really felt as Electric hauled trains only.
Then after 100% Electrification, those WDM's; after changing their design; (by putting a Dual Box-Cabbed shape, by replacing their Hood shape on both sides), can also be accordingly converted into an electric loco as well, at right time and required opportunity.
Then in one way, we can really say, all the WDM's has been converted into WAM-4's; in one way; by just changing their design from Hood Shape to Dual Box-cabbed shape on both the sides, and also after installing Pantographs and all other neccessary equipments; required for an Electric Loco; after 100% Electrification.
As a result, no locomotive change will be required; causing unnecessary time wastage on stations, and also the loco's would be preserved; by keeping them in use; without requiring to decommission and waste them. The government investment will also be saved in this process.
Right now, just redesigning their both sides; by putting Dual Box-Cabbed shape on both the sides of the loco; by replacing their typical hood shapes can be done, without making any other changes in the locos; when they are still Diesel locos; to make them look, as nice as the WAM-4's; while they are WDM Diesel locos only.
After all the lines are electrified, those WAM-4 shaped WDM's can just be comfortably converted into Electric locos; by installing the pantographs and all other neccessary equipment's; required to be installed in an Electric Loco.
Then in one way, we can even get back the WAM-4's back; through the converted WDM's; in the form of, Dual Box-cabbed WAM-4 type design, as well as after the loco conversion from Diesel to Electric; just as described. And those loco's can still operate along with their regular mail/express trains; which they haul, after the routes are electrified, without wasting and decommissioning the loco's as well, and also saving the government Investments; in the process.
