Much of the Spellbinder's design is referencing Merlin's owl: Archimedes. If you look at the guard area, the two round shapes are eyes with the bottom being the nose. Also, the two notches on the guard are actually ears. The round shape at the top of the blade is another eye. The rest of the design is the obvious astrology and magical references. Also, Owl gives you this Keyblade in Chain of Memories.

I wasn't a fan of them making Divine Rose as powerful as it is, or dropping Metal Chocobo's strength. Growing up, I always saw it as a trade off. I could get two of the strongest Keyblades in Metal Chocobo and Oblivion, but had to give up magic to do so. It wasn't until you got Ultima Weapon that you had a Keyblade for both. But in Final Mix, Divine Rose doesn't really have a trade off. It's just extremely powerful and doesn't cost any magic to do so. It's so weird to me.

    • @TotallyCluelessGamer

Not too long ago saying something to that effect was apparently controversial. Been saying the exact same things to people since back in the Ps3 days and all I'd get was people yelling at me about how their length justified them being completely inferior to other weapons.

    Unmentioned detail of One-Winged Angel
    - teeth is meteor
    - whilst technically mentioned, the blade itself is the masamune, sephiroths sword, however i believe its the version equipable by cloud
    - the chain is aeriths ribbon (you can tell bc of the way its tied)
    - the keychain itself is sephys iconic wing
    - the flames in the handle look to be pheonix downs
    - the hilt itself may be a referance to one of yuffies weapons but im unsure, either that or that it reminds me of maybe a frame on barrets gun arm (although thats reaching a bit)

You can get Sephiroth's Masamune, through hacking. For whatever reason, probably because Sephiroth and Vincent share data, the game classifies it as a gun. So you can only equip it to Vincent, and only again through hacking, the game won't manually let you equip it. Interestingly, it has its own gun model. It's a silver gun. And though Vincent still shoots with it, when it hits the enemies there's a slash effect.

Someone else might have said this already, but if you continue this as a series for every game do NOT sleep on re:coded. If only because it is the only game in the series so far that changes the basic combo and feel of the move set entirely between keyblades.
The difference between Olympia and Three Wishes is FELT even more than just seen (as an example), and there are still new keyblades too.
It would also be pretty neat to look at the low resolution versions of the repeat keyblades and seeing if anything important was lost in the downgrade.

358/2 Days has different movesets for its keyblades - being made by the same people, you can even notice some moves making their way into Impact Arts and Sonic Arts. But yeah, the latter two are chunkier/clearer movesets, and the keyblades in general have a lot of cool, thematic abilities to pick between. Re:coded may only be some of the keyblades from I and the Zero/One, but they're also a lot more unique than in I or most other games save III. :3

      @strictlybananas 3 года назад +10

@@jexusdomel5194 Yeah that’s a pretty good point. Fenrir barely looks like the Buster Sword honestly and only really resembles Cloud through the wrapping on the blade. Fenrir still looks cool as hell in my opinion, but the Metal Chocobo is more or less exactly what the Buster sword would look like as a Keyblade. It’s a giant hunk of metal because, well, that’s what the Buster sword is haha but yeah the “materia slots” and the colors are just *chef kiss* to me.

Ventus was also damaged by xehanort and had his heart repaired by sora at some point. So sora could have ventus's keyblade along with a piece of his heart that was released when the hearts were all released from sora and the keyblade of hearts. Riku might just have terras keyblade as you expect hidden away somewhere. • @TotallyCluelessGamer
      @TotallyCluelessGamer 3 года назад +10

@@Scorchlette and the Olympia vs Metal Chocobo stat comparison in FM is the same story as Oblivion and Divine Rose.
In Vanilla KH2 I saw it as a tradeoff, Metal Chocobo was longer and more consistent in its physical damage output, while Olympia spared your mp bar in exchange for being shorter and relying on strong Crits to bridge the small strength gap. However in Final Mix there is no reason to ever equip Metal Chocobo unless you fail the Hercules cup after beating Cloud.
I pretty much never use the long keyblades with the exception of The Ultima Weapon anymore because I find Strength, Mp, Critical Hit Rate/Power and Recoil to be way more important.

Interestingly, there are even more hidden stats beyond these in the game code as well. Each keyblade has a Length Modifer and a Hitbox Modifier. The length modifier determines what % of the model has an active hitbox, and is generally set to 90% with a small number of keyblades that vary from this. If you increase this in code, the keyblade will have a greatly increased range along its axis, but also be able to clank on things within that range.
In contrast, if you increase the Hitbox Modifier, you will increase both the length and width of the hitbox, but without clanking against things that come in contact with this hitbox. This is how Kingdom Hearts: Critical Mix creates the range extension effects found on the Olympus Medal accessory, the passive buff for starting with Dream Sword, and the triggered effect for holding down L2 while attacking with Olympia.
Another interesting note is that the Recoil stat can be increased to such a degree that it causes the keyblade to pierce through all obstacles, including Defender shields, Large Body bellies, and Wizard lightningstorm invincibility. However, doing so also causes all enemy attacks to pierce through your guard, and prevents you from clashing.
Unrelated tidbit: There is a very rudimentary magic-combo system in this game. As most people know, using the fire spell multiple times in a row causes successive fires to use a much shorter animation that skips the opening. BUT, What most people don't know is that you can actually chain into this from specific keyblade attacks. The 2 keyblade swinging animations that result in the keyblade being extended in front of sora in a stabbing motion can be immediately chained into the second, faster version of Fire.

I know this video is mostly applied to Kingdom Hearts 1, but in terms of Olympia, Lady Luck, and Three Wishes (almost forgot Divine Rose too being honest), I do appreciate that they later just add to their designs in Union X, or just KHX in general I guess. Its maxed out Olympia blows me away wih its design, really screams the might of Zeus or something, and its something I'm actually disappointed the changing design with upgrades didnt show up into KH3. God knows Starlight needed it.
But yeah, Olympia in KHUX really is one of my favorites. Definitely think the upgrade designs are worth checking out, as well as just how all the KHX keyblades changes depending on levels.

You know, in Kingdom Hearts 1, when I played through it, I got to the end and went 'okay, so there's three keyblades. The Kingdom Key, the Keyblade of Light. The Kingdom Key D, the Keyblade of Darkness. And the nameless Keyblade of Hearts, which is a false Keyblade manufactured by Ansem'.
Even all the other 'keyblades' Sora uses, it was always just a new form the Kingdom Key took on based on the connections Sora makes and all, thus why they're themed after the worlds and characters.
Later on, with more users popping up and more history... I still feel like the Kingdom Keys are the only 'Real' Keyblades, the split form of the x-Blade, with all the others false ones manufactured by the ancient masters or others.

    • @chrisdaughen5257

Maybe the idea is that the Kingdom Key (and mickeys Keyblade of Darkness) is a fragment of the x-blade while everyone else’s is manifested from their heart. That’s why everyone’s keyblades except sora’s reflect their personality. Of course WHERE these keyblades come from is a mystery like where Riku got his in KH3 (and where he got Kairi’s in KH2). Maybe Mickey going to Scaleum Ad Caleum will answer that question? It may even explain why the MoM was so revered.

I'm actually surprised by the Keyblades who's French translation are actually closer to Japanese than English:
Crabclaw: Treasure of the sea -> Trésor des mers ( literal )
Oathkeeper: Promised Charm -> Tendre Promesse ( Tender Promise )
However there's different ones, such as:
Lady Luck: Last Resort -> As de Cœur ( Ace of Hearts ) Technically, a ace of hearts in your hand can be used as a last resort, and also happens to be the token.
Oblivion: Passing Memories -> Souvenir Perdu ( Lost Memory ) Seems to mix both Japanese and English names, and hints a bit towards the next game.
    Special mention to:
Divine Rose: La vie en Rose -> Rose éternelle ( Eternal Rose ) Considering the french expression depicts a happy loving life, it might not have worked well for native speakers.
Lionheart for being untranslated. Probably was the same case in FF VIII.
Also, little note about the One-Winged Angel ( also, that's the name of Sephiroth's theme ), the ball of fire on its tip is actually a representation of Meteor, a spell he casts in-battle in Olympus but also refers to a certain Meteor in FF VII... it's literally drawn behind the title.
