@Maximiliano Erik I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I've an original owner of one of these of about the same vintage, so it's a keeper for me. Glows in the dark too! I had a Big Muff that I bought in the early '70s (yes, I'm old) but I could never bond with it because it was so shrill and fizzy (to me) but is probably worth a ton of money now.
Sounds really great. I picked up a Stomp Under Foot Skinner Box a while back which is supposedly a clone of the 'Bud Box' handwired RAT and it's a beast as well. That is RAT!
Had the same one. Filter at 2:00 and the distorton at 10:00. Main touring distortion through the 90s until it died. Got the Turbo Rat to replace it but not as good . DS-1 was a placeholder but Tube Screamer was my eventual satisfied substitute.
I just bought a vintage Rat because I can hear some songs that I like using the Rat as a distortion. Once I got it and plugged it in, there it was the sound that I could hear in some songs.
That....is RAT! I was just getting my GAS under control and you make a video like this. Damn it, I just bought another one. I forgot how much fun they were. Thank you for the review .
Crazy, it's 1987, [ sorry the RAT pedal comes into the story later] I'm in my Hollywood, CA 1550 BRONSON AVE APT 2C studio apartment. I just gutted my SOUND CITY 120 amp and rebuilt it into a 1969/1971 MARSHALL HEAD with 6 EL34's(reusing premo parts-6Mullard EL34's, 4Mullard and one 'Bugle Boy' ECC83/12ax7's, Partridge Power & Output transformers a.k.a. 'also used in HI-WATT' amps', sweet sounding " yes there is a difference" mustard dipped radial capacitors, Mallory Filter can capacitors). It was my first non-Fender mod-build. Amp guru Frank Levi III was my roommate. So I really wanted to impress him...even though Frank was kind of pitch tone deaf he had a mastery of guitar tone...he couldn't play guitar. His shop SG sat on the bench and he'd just reach over and open pluck strings. Frank and I became roommates with neither one of us knowing we were guitar amp junkies. I just knew he worked at Ocean Way Studios and that I like everyone else played guitar. So anyway, I'd stayed up all night tweaking the 'New Marshall' and I had a 4 x 12" cab [2 grey back Celestions and 2 G12T-75's] surrounded on three sides with the long hanging closet doors I'd removed, then I took several found couch cushions and blankets and barricaded the doors and open end where I put an SM58 mic and ran it to my Tascam Porta-one 4 track, then to a Pioneer Stereo and speakers. Plugged straight into the guitar amp it was 100% Malcolm Young AC/DC! My strat had a 'custom' humbucker with big cylinder headed allen bolts instead of screws I'd bought from a from a guy who sold factory 2nds, and/or flawed BC Rich guitars from his apartment. So I plugged in my buddy's brand new 1987 Rat pedal. With the pedal it sounded like Angus Young. I loved the tight distortion of the '87 Rat. After a while everyone who played guitar in the complex had walked in. One guy had an earlier, white background Rat pedal he bought a few years earlier. Now that pedal was AMAZING! I got Eddie Van Halen's 1984 sound. The amp iirc, I had biased in the lower 20's.
One of my favorite distortion pedals ever. I really like to do the led/lift mod. Lm308s are getting to be hard to find though. I bought a bunch from smallbear a while back. Great video!
@@TheGuitarGeek yes. It’s a pretty standard rat configuration with clipping mods. Red leds give it a volume and headroom increase. Highly recommend doing it to a cheaper rat variant or finding a turbo rat. The turbo uses the leds in the clipping stage. Smoother with a little less gristle and fizz. Some will say they lm308 sounds different than the newer op07 op amps but the slew rates are damn near identical. The difference is negligible imho. The mod to do the rat “trinity” is pretty easy. Pretty much just pulling the clipping diodes and running jumpers from both sides of d1 to the middle lugs of an on/off/on dpdt toggle switch and building a diode ladder/array on both sides of the switch. Leds on 1 side and 1n914s on the other. You will have a normal rat on the 914 side and a turbo on the other and a lift in the middle for straight op amp clipping. Do it to a new one...you won’t be disappointed. I will link to a basic diagram. www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=91505.0
I have one from the early 90's. I found it a little too compressed with humbuckers or P90's but worked great as a boost for solos stacked with my Boss Turbo overdrive which was my 'always on' pedal. Heavy as a house brick, ate batteries like it hadn't been fed for a week so a power module was a must.
That is Rat and so is my Rat. Mine is a big box that I have had since the mid '80s. It looked old when I got it which is odd because based on other videos I watched it was only a year or two old by then based on the stylized Rat logo.
I had a RAT2 I bought in 88, I had a newer RAT I'd bought a few years ago and a JOYO Splinter which future Andy did a video on (ha ha ha). Of all of those RATs I'd mentioned, the only one I still own and like is actually the JOYO Splinter. I really liked Future Andy's super secret setting between MOSFET and stock :)
