Interesting to know. My assumption was the older artstyle, especially the style in XY, just wouldn't have fit the more relaxed vibe SM had from the games. Like, in the SM games, up until you start getting into the UBs and Lusamine plotline, it feels very much like an island vacation with friends. Even the apparent villain team is just a bunch of rowdy kids, compared to the genocidal Flare. XY's style was great, I just figured it was changed because it wouldn't have fit Alola well.
Also, "mixed reception" is one way to put it. I've been cussed out for defending the SM style before 😅 The discourse was really toxic back in the day, but has dialed down considerably since.

Although I do understand Nakano's point his decision on making Ash more childlike really ended up being more like a light switch straight up comming from XYZ, it truly felt like a disconnection from past versions, which works fine as it's own thing but when you tie up all the series together it just adds more inconsistency within Ash's character, despite me not agreeing with that I appreciate the fact that he alongside Tomiyasu were able to make their vision of Ash's character true and tell their own story, props to them for that

But when SM was annonced, i was not happy about the change design and it has been stuck with it ever sense.
The anime was not same when the art style changed, it focus on more comedy which then forget the plot of the episode.

I personally don’t mind the art style swap always liked how more natural it felt (probably because when i got back into the anime it was during the S&M era so im comfortable with it lol) I still feel Ash as a character is mature enough mentally to grow but also still young enough to be 10. Like seriously he shown that from XY onwards he could build teams that would seem unconventional and make them work and develop strategies that nobody else thought about. His drive to better himself and his Pokémon has always been a mature thing same with him wanting to help his friends. Cause bell me season 1 Ash was absolutely self absorbed and stubborn compared to now where he puts others before his own feelings. So in all just because the art style changed doesn’t mean he wasn’t always gonna mature while still being a kid. It’s called growing up and learning from life experiences anime staff.

    • @aaryaaswadhati5525

XYZ they wanted to focus on ash's battling skills and bravery, but Sun and Moon they took a step back to really expand and create this world for Ash that he would look upon as his home away from home, however I don't think Ash lost his maturity, he battled like crazy and did get stronger and took a break but early in the anime he realized he wants to get back into being a pokemon master and it sparking the grand trials, and one thing people don't even talk about is that Ash was serious when it came to battles, just look at Ash vs Olivia, he fucking punched the floor and made rockruff beat the shit out of lycanrock, there were some goofy moments during the battle however it shows growth that he is ok with losing and wants to bring out the best in his pokemon and have fun, when in XYZ blud would go into a state of depression when he lost a battle. he was goofy outside of battling thats all. I will admit it was a really wierd change in the start but I got used to it.

I don't mind the switch in art styles but the one thing I'm disappointed is that "Why is he still a 10-year-old?". The XYZ animation does make him look like 15-17 years old and more mature and I really like that part about it, but during when he gets all badges they do mention on how long there is left before the pokemon tournament starts during the series. In the Journeys series, he was supposed to be at least 18 years old.
In the end, I never liked the idea of the art style change because the director wants the main protagonist to still look like 10 years old.

Writers thinking ash was too mature in x/y for a ten year old is stereotypical, everyone grows up at their own speed. There are ten year old kids who are pretty mature for their age, because they are raised good and had serious situations at a young age. But there are also adults who a very immature for their age. Ash personality in x/y could be a good role model for kids. To me some behaviour he showed sometimes in various seasons is too immature even for a ten year old.

To be honest to argument that ash is stiff and boring in XY is not true. He still has his childish moments that shows his funny and goofy side. Ash being too cool for a 10 year-old is true but it's fiction. His character had been developing for almost 20 years at that point and would make sense if he was 16 or 17 to fit his cool characterization. They didn't have to make Ash completely childlike in SM. He still has his serious moments but overall doesn't completely act how he should for the amount of character growth he has at this point. On the animation side, I will always prefer XY art style but I do get why they changed the art style in SM. However, the only problem I have with the art style is Ash's FACE, that's it. Everything else is fine. If his face looked more like Journeys Ash or a mix between SM and XY it would look way better. Basically like Dragon Ball Super Broly Goku. Cause even with that movie's softer animation, you can make Goku look cool in action moments or even in less serious moments but with Ash, he looks off every time he's in any scene let alone action scenes.

This isn't a clear cut answer, what Satoshi Tomiyasu is saying is basically, the same Ash that was also in Advanced Generation and Diamond and Pearl, wasn't the original Ash, so this is why I believe that the Ash that we see in Sun & Moon and Journeys is from another universe and Ash from The Beginning until XY&Z is from another universe, the knowledge of Ash of Mega Evolution is because, I don't know, he might've heard of it from someone in Alola, and not because Sun & Moon is connected to XY&Z, no matter what you say, it's not going to change my mind, and Aura, I think that we should discuss about this in one of your up and coming streams, and as a final, changing the art style, was the WORST mistake that the Pokémon Company did

A series that had so many different writers and art style changes, causing different versions throughout the years. So am totally confuse how can ash in journey even win when he got downgraded in intellect like how did he not forget his past experience battles but everything else he forgets ?
I find it funny how edgy is now considered boring or bad when edgy is what some wanted more like Yugioh to have more 5ds and those random characters that appears once just 1min in Shonen jump anime/manga just to play them in games they are soo weak but still so cool lmfao. latently in these years movies , anime, games and etc have been doing both fans and the Mc & characters dirty from downgrades to erasing past achievements or completely redesign.

I personally stand on the side of those against the art style change mainly for aesthetic reasons. I just don't like how Ash and the other characters from previous seasons look (such as Team Rocket), though I am kind of fine with how the new characters do look however, since I had no previous version to compare them with.
When people asked me what I didn't like of Ash's Alola artstyle my answer would be "I don't like his nose".
I never looked at the matter from a character development perspective as when the SM serie was airing I did not watch it, aside from a few episodes but the critics to how his development, from an inexperienced trainer to a more serious and competent one, seem to have been lost, but we already got that in Black and White so it's nothing new.
Personally the character design they adopted in Journeys, and is sticking on with Horizons if fine by me as it looks more cartooney than the seasons until XYZ but not out right goofy.

    2. We shouldn't treat Ash as a 10-year-old because of past experiences, and growth. And the Fact that TIME actually passes in the Anime, meaning ASH IS NOT TEN...
    3. Season 1 - 19 is it's own series, while S&M - Journeys is in it's own continuity...

I love both XY/XYZ and SM, for different reasons, and the artstyles both make sense for the contexts of the stories they tell. It was just a very jarring shift at the time; honestly, to not drive myself crazy with the character inconsistencies, I just see it as different timelines/continuities; kind of like how the anime portrayals of a character in Pokémon are different from their game portrayals, from their manga portrayals. (Idk if that made sense lol 😅)
Edit: I don’t particularly like how Ash forgets previous things/techniques in BW, SM, and Journeys. The artstyle change wasn’t quite the problem; they could’ve kept the artstyle change while also keeping Ash’s creative battling and quick adaptation, while using Alola as a chance for him to decompress from XY’s events, while still having him be a mentor (with less pressure).

Regardless, I personally believe the XY artstyle was far more appealing. I understand that SM artstyle allowed more expressiveness and such but there could have been a better middle ground (Journeys is an example). Also with the age thing, crazy idea but they could have just aged him up. Not sure why they absolutely had to keep him 10 years old. I personally believe he could have aged 1 year per series putting him at 18 in Journeys.

For me, ashes development is a mute point. Because, for the most part, each season ass somehow is mentally nerfed. Yes X and why he was on top of his game, but that was right after one of worst errors, which is black and white. Were most of ashes. Pokémon weren’t fully trained he lost to a guy would Eevees as his team. and he was going through childish arguments with his companion Iris.
As for sun and moon I feel like it makes sense. They changed his personality to make the animation fun. For the animators to have fun and experiment and they try to bring that into journeys.
Even since I was a kid, I knew Ash had a very, very slow progression compared to other series/“ clones“ like Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Were those animes it’s clear as day and you can see how the protagonist progress and got better.
But let me clarify list even though I don’t think ashes journey had his frustrating moments if you look at it as a whole. It doesn’t look too far off to someone competitive journey in something like Pokémon. Like joining an actual tournament or for sure going to suck , but your progress might get better as you keep working at it and I’d say that’s very awesome.

I honeslty didn't like the animation or downgraded Ash personality. Well mainly personailty. I do respect the reasons of the change, but it just didn't feel the same. and if your going to try and mix reality with fiction, then for once just make ash older. Literally in the first season he spent a whole year traveling with misty and broke before the Indago league, and he's still 10 after literally every other reagion that claims it took ash roughly a year to collect 8 gym badges.
I don't remember what people esitmate, but I think ash was supossley around 14 years old during the X&Y series. I am sure he wouldn't age quickly but he definitly wouldn't still be 10 for 20 years.

I do not care about animation much but I know many others who do and that includes my 28 years old brother.
The only negative thing about Alola's Ash is he looked different when you compare his looks to all other seasons. Like definitely, people (including me) felt they were no longer watching Ash just because he looked very different and unrecognizable as if someone from the internet was trying to draw a different look from ash (in other words remix of Ash). So, it does not feel natural to see and feel that it is the real Ash. My 28 years brother has completely stopped watching Pokémon (Alola and all the others after Alola, even Horizons) ever since they made the Alolan Ash character design. When I asked my bro. why did you stop watching it? His answer was the reasons I mentioned above. Journeys and all the other versions (except for Alola) (they did not bother me at all or at least most people). I too didn't like how Ash looked in Alola, it did feel weird to me every time I saw him and I wished he looked like the real Ash but I still enjoyed the series for its content.

Ash had consistency towards most of his time in the anime regardless of the artstyle if you actually paid attention.
If you look at his journey he was always progressing:
Gen 1 He was a complete rookie that talked big but knew nothing about being a pokemon trainer and needed to be taught everything.
Gen 2 He becomes a trainer that at the very least knows the basics. But still a bit arrogant for his own good
Gen 3 He is a bit more mature and acts as a mentor figure to May, that just like Ash, has a very similar beginning (seriously, Drew is just the contest version of Gary).
Gen 4 He is already an experienced trainer and it's the first time that he has to face someone with completely different ideals when it comes to training that makes him question his own methods. With both learning the value about each other's training methods at the end.
Gen 5 This one was a soft reboot. But you can easily consider him as an Ash that took some time away from being a trainer after diamond and pearl, and thus, needs to refresh his knowledge after going back to pokemon battles.
Gen 6. He is back on track and aiming to win more than ever. But that's exactly what turns into a problem because he became too eager to win and didn't take things calmly. Specially when he sees other trainers like Sawyer catching up to him or even beating gyms first than him.
Gen 7 He remembers why he likes to be a Pokemon trainer in the first place. He is an experienced trainer but and this time he has his mind in the right place and ends up winning the league.
Gen 8 It's literally a culmination of everything he learned and him looking back on his entire journey.
And this isn't the only example. Looking a bit earlier during his victory in the Alola league:
You can see how the final battle for the champion title was set up to be a reflection of entire journey up until that point and avenge his previous league defeats.
Indigo: Squirtle is ruled to be knocked out after getting hit with sleep powder and Charizard refuses to fight by taking a nap. Alola: Rowlet is ruled to be still able to fight since it fell asleep instead of being knocked out.
Johto: Ash's Fire type starter Charizard loses to another trainer's fully evolved fire-type starter Blaziken. Alola: Ash defeats a fully evolved fire-type starter Incineroar with his own fire type starter Torracat.
Hoenn: Ash loses to an unevolved Meowth wearing clothes (that had a rivalry with his final form that wanted to make him get stronger). Alola: Ash wins with an unevolved Pokemon wearing clothes (Rowlet) and also had a rivalry with Decidueye.
Sinnoh: Ash loses to a trainer using a legendary and a mythical. Alola: Ash catches Naganadel and Melmetal and defeats two legendaries during the league: Sivally and Tapu Koko. With one of them being based on a mythical pokemon from gen 4.
Unova: Ash loses to Cameron when the latter's Riolu evolves into Lucario in the middle of the match and defeats his remaining team. Alola: Ash defeats a Lucario without losing a single Pokemon. Also, Torracat evolves AFTER defeating Incineroar so the evolution doesn't feel like the plot armor that Cameron got in that moment and more as the culmination of Torracat's efforts.
Kalos: Ash loses to a trainer with a fully evolved fire starter that stumbles briefly before standing while Greninja goes down to a Blast Burn. Alola: Torracat not only absorbs a Blast Burn; but after his final clash with Incineroar, he stumbles briefly before standing while Incineroar goes down.
The Alola league was the longest of all leagues and it was great thanks to the fact that you actually got to know Ash as a character a lot through the years.
(Fun fact/Side note: Lillie's battle againts Gladion was based in an actual strategy from competitive for Alolan Vulpix. They really did their research). And as you can see, it also had a lot of cool things to notice as well like this ones.
As you can tell his portrayal in the anime does has consistency.

I think XY should have really focused in and dove far into Ash’s character and concluded his story. I appreciated Sun and Moon’s originality, so much so that I think they should have introduced a new character and revamped the idea of a 10 year old exploring the series. They could have had Ash come back in episodes throughout the series with his Pikachu and Ash-Greninja in order to further train and take on the Battle Royal at the end of the story. Perhaps they could have introduced Leeko here and Ash sort of being a mentor figure with him teaching the protagonist about Z-Moves showing off his Ash-Pikachu Z powered attack as an alternative to the Battle Royal storyline. They seriously watered down and ruined Ash as a character with having him lose progress and growth to fit a narrative? We could have went ALL OUT in XY. This would have also boosted the merchandise sales as well as the show rates from old time fans. I myself and a lot of fans would have went into Sun and Moon even more hype craving more seeing our main protagonist retire as a MC and pass on the mantle.

I can understand why they made the change in SM & I’m on the side that feels the change fit better with the themes and tones, but I will agree that the show went too far with the whole “making him a 10 year old” since there were some episodes where he seemed more like DBS Goku than an actual kid.

Honestly I get Ash is supposed to be ten and the need to make him more child-like, but I actually liked how mature and serious ash was with the shonen art style. It meant that despite being 10 he was still growing up mentally, something that was consistent from the original series all the way to XY (even with the idiot phase Ash went through in unova, he still sounded fairly mature). It also kept Ash's appearance mostly consistent with how he looked from day one if u think about it
In Sun and Moon, yeah I didn't really care about the art style much but it definitely looked like they aged ash down too much and at first glance I barely even recognised him. I know he's a kid but he sounded even more childish than the original series and that just didn't sit well with me. Journeys didn't help with that despite the slightly better art style. Heck, Ash practically yelled commands in battle more than just straight up give them, and the way he tried to explain things half the time, I was like "and he's supposed to be a mentor with such BS explanations"? And let's not forget the episode where drizzile evolved which had Ash look for data on the floor. ON THE FLOOR!! That's not just being childish, that is absolutely STUPID!

It does not help that XY is out of all versions of Ash the most cool and grown-looking version of him. This means they couldn't have picked a time with more whiplash to do this hard turn. To add salt to injury, they had robbed him of his champion title for the second time (first being the DP days), then proceeded to make him win the most worthless and gag-filled league in Alola. Needless to say, I favor XY.
I however did hear once somebody say Ash is deceptively good with his move choices in Alola despite the childish style, and by comparison XY Ash did still at least once throw a thunderbolt vs a ground type. Also to be fair, neither Alola nor Kalos disrupt Ash's consistency, Unova Ash did. Everything up to the end of DP was consistent and he got dumbed down for BW. I'd say Kalos Ash perphaps slightly overcorrected the course, and then Alola Ash tried to overcorrect in a different direction, and it just was not gonna work out. Independently on who is right, the character's consistency just could not remain consistent for that long (not in a story with continuity and progression at least).

I still gonna said that wasn't a enough reason to change the art style, instead of making ash is past days like never happened, thay should make ash is age two or three years older,I mean thay did a summer party in kanto and summer camp in sinnow and Kalos

To me, a mature kid character is far far away from what Kalos Ash was written like, he should be more like Lilo from Lilo and Stich, maturity should not take away softness moments.

Honestly, while both sides make valid points, I feel like a lot of these problems could be solved or explained or fixed...
...if they just *LET THE BOY AGE!!!*

Ash in Sun and moon is just ugly
    Who allowed this ?
It really runined the series for me
I really thought they downgraded because they spent their budget on XY lol
In every other series Ash looks cool
