Great footage, but the narrator is uninformed. I suggest people go up there for themselves. The "park" isn't a park, it's the North Maine Woods. It's privately held timberlands and the camping and recreational gate access is managed by an organization representing all of those landowners to ensure continuous access and consistent regulations within the woods. The North Maine Woods is 3.5 million acres, not 6 million acres. The fees are steep, but they are discounted for residents where a day-use fee is in line with the hourly minimum wage. This is a privately owned and managed area, so they charge what it costs them to keep the gates staffed and the campsites maintained. The fees don't even go to road maintenance. The "decimation" of the forest he showed was a dead water of a river or stream, not the result of logging. The forests are managed for their timber resources, without the forest industry, the lands would likely be used for development. Most of the main roads are extremely stock friendly, but where the video is right, is the vastness of the woods. Driving hundreds of miles without being on a paved road is unique in the east. There are plenty of areas where 4wd is necessary with 4-lo to make it comfortable. To anyone coming up in late September-early December, I suggest wearing orange. It's moose, grouse, hare, and deer season.
Hey Ian, thanks for watching and sharing the insights! Admittedly I am very unaware of all that is the North Main Woods, so comments like yours help not only me but other people watching (I went ahead and pinned your comment). While I am a lifelong resident of Boston, I did not know anything about the woods until this year. But this is a good reminder to do a lot more research before I embark on these journeys! Thanks again for watching!
@@Ian-ex3dehey do you have a recommendation for a scenic North Maine Woods Overlanding spot? I’m planing a trip up there from NYC and I’m not familiar with the area. I was thinking of “the golden road” but I’m not sure if there are any dispersed camping sites. 😊
@@RDOverlandthere are authorized campsites throughout. Most are very remote and secluded. I’d recommend any on Wadleigh Pond for the southern part of the NMW. If heading more north (my preferred locale) I’d look at any of the spots along the St John River or Allagash River.
thanks so much for watching, unfortunately I wasn't navigating so I don't have access to the maps! One thing we didn't do is wear HI VIS clothing, it is a hunting grounds so make sure you get some high vis for when you're off walking around.
Some late thoughts. North Maine Woods is not a "Park". Its a vast commercial logging area (3.4 million aces, not 6), with a huge amount of (not free) scattered primitive camp sites, boat access sites, some commercial camps as well as the Allagash National Scenic River running down the middle. It is not Baxter State Park. Also, maybe add info. on the vehicles and equipment used, overlanders love to read/hear about the gear used. Also comment as to where you are camping.
I love how your videos have been about getting out there and seeing nature and exploring and CARS but all (commentary, vid shots, vid progression and transition) with a soothing tone
Thanks again, so there is a fee to get into the park, from there, there are several camp sites - this is also hunting ground so you should wear high visibility clothing
Designated camp sites , definitely should have orange on during hunting season . You can get information by contacting the North Maine woods . Narrator is misinformed about the NMW.
