Probably the most bad ass video you've ever made. We need more 500 s&w testing! According to the hornady manual 1665 FPS and yes I've loaded the same XTP bullets to max, its pretty close. Your not going to get a 350gr bullet to ~ 2000fps safely out of this gun, to do that, the bullet would need to be about 275gr.

Thanks gentlemen. Well done, as always. Great footage, data, details & entertainment. Yes, Yes, Yes it is practical. Mainly for hunting. Good for deer, hog, bear, even elk within reasonable range. I have considered a 500 since it's introduction but have stayed with my faithful 44 magnums. I think I will go 460 S&W if I choose X-Frame. It is a bit more versatile with the ability to use 454 & 45 Colt. 45 bullets offer a bit more variety as well. But I can't knock that beast of a bullet in the 500. Good stuff.

There’s no such thing as overkill when it comes to firearms!! I don’t own an X frame, but I have an N frame Model 29-2 with an 8 3/8” barrel. My friends talked me into bringing it hunting last year. I was hoping to get a hog with it, but didn’t get an opportunity. Gonna try again this year. I think I had some 240 grain XTP’s loaded with H110 powder.

Living in Alaska, and spending a lot of time outdoors, there is definitely a purpose. I carry the 6.5" version in a Diamond D chest rig and use Buffalo Bore 440gr. hardcast rounds for Grizzly protection, if I'm not carrying a hunting rifle. If I have my rifle with me I carry a Ruger GP 100 7 shot .357 mag with hardcast rounds. I like the 500 but it can be a lot to pack when you have other things to carry as well.

Had one borrowed from a neighbor for a year or so. Loaded 350g Speer Soft Points (Cheapest 500 Bullet) with 41.0g of H110. Absolute blast to shoot. Great range toy. I enjoyed letting other people shoot it more than shooting it myself. We were in TN shooting and every time we needed a break I would get it out and lay over all the steel targets.

My ex-fatherinlaw didn't crimp enough and the bullets came out from the recoil. Scary situation because one of the rounds failed to fire the powder and the primer pushed the bullet into the barrel. Thank God we checked because we could have easily figured it was a miss-fire and just went onto the next round. Further investigation found all the bullets had jumped out of the case powder was everywhere, so ya CRIMP is a must.

I knew an old farmhand who called his 500 mag a "sasquatch gun" because if you heard a sasquatch in the night you would feel better with it in your hand. he also put 22lr in that category because both those calibers have mythical properties if you ask the right people. I don't own one but I would buy one if I was visiting my family in Idaho during the winter when I wouldn't be able to use bear spray effectively which is my a preference over a firearm because I don't have the best aim under pressure.

The big horn lever gun can run those 350 xtps at 2200 fps if ya want. Shot a bull elk with my prototype, broke the left hip. He went downhill towards my jeep but I ran out of daylight. Came back in the morning and found him dead. Probably asked too much of that bullet at that speed. I only push them to 2000 now.

You guys keep talking about massive wound channels, this time you said 12", is this the temporary wound channels? If so, from what I hear is that the temporary wound channels has little effect on killing power. Most animal tissue does expand like the temporary wound channels shows, it also contracts back to nearly normal just as quick.
The permanent wound channels is the better indicator of killing power. Those pathway is where the animal bleeds out through. After the temporary wound channels collapse back to normal no blood flows from them.
Even in high velocity rifle cartridges the so called hydrostatic pressure created has little effect on killing power.

Overkill? Not really because dead is dead as long as you're not trying to keep the meat from the animal if it's the size of a jack rabbit lol but I have one and I shoot mostly extreme 325grn plated bullets with a 18.5grn charge of longshot using the 350xtp oal because all my books just have barnes load data for 325 grain bullets and they're super long so the xtp oal works fine and for the heavier bullets I use my own hard cast and powdercoated 440grn rnfp bullets with 4227 going 1500fps and no gas check and it's never left any lead in my barrel

    Title 18 U.S. Code § 242 - Deprivation of rights under color of law · Based on title 18, U.S.C., 1940 ed., § 52 (Mar. 4, 1909, ch. 321, § 20, 35 Stat. 1092).
    SUMMARY:
