Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884)
Má vlast (My Homeland), six tone poems (1872-79)
There are like a hundred versions of The Moldau on RUclips, but the world seems to ignore that this is just the second of a cycle of six tone poems, poems which share themes between them and are to be considered as a whole work (otherwise, how could you really understand what is the theme at the end of the Moldau?).

Vysehrad was always my favorite despite Vltava’s popularity.
Me too.
@@ruaraidhsutherland7804 And I like Blanik the best. So triumphant at the end. But all are wonderful.
I'm always amazed at how Smetana writes every tempo and dynamic nuance. With many composers one has to use one's musical knowledge and intuition to play their music well. Not with this! Everything's right there on the printed page. And he does want an orchestra's loudest and softest playing!
I was in 10th grade playing viola when I made the county wide youth orchestra. First two pieces I learned: Sibelius Symphony No. 3 and Smetana's Bohemia's Woods and Fields. Though Vyšehrad is my favorite of the suite, Bohemia's Woods and Fields is pure nostalgia and takes me back to when I was introduced to professional grade music.
What two great pieces! I don't play in an orchestra but it just seems like that would be pure joy playing those two pieces.
Prague was the last stop of my very recent Europe trip. I loved my experience there. The major key section of Vltava really reminds me of the liveliness of the city that I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, listening to Vltava right after Vysehrad (in order!) really touches you in the feels, as Vysehrad ends with the castle eventually collapsing but its memory living on and Vltava has a section with the Vysehrad motif in it, almost as if the water of the river is saying hello to an old friend before it flows out to the Elbe, eventually into Germany and the North Sea.
When at school, this was the first piece of classical music I heard that made me realise that music could tell a story as well as sound nice. I've listened to it now for sixty years and love it more with every hearing. How I wish I could thank my teacher from all those years ago for giving me such a priceless life gift

My favs: Sarka & Bohemia's Fields & Forests
My heartiest thanks for uploading the score video. There used to be another score-video of Ma Vlast, but it got taken down for some reason.
Yes, it was mine, this is a reupload. The audio was blocked a couple of months ago. :)
Maravilloso. 💯
Thank you for posting this gem along with score. Blanik has always been my favorite, then Moldau.
