You can dice the fresh one and saute it and then use it for fishless cakes or crebless cakes. So the frest blossoms can be used that way. I do it oftent

I'm from Northern England and fish and chips are a staple here! My local chip shop makes banana blossom fish and it's really good! Very excited to try and make it myself after watching this video! 👏

Yes, I get my banana blossom from my local Asian market. It is a great alternative to using hearts of palm. I prefer the can blossoms better IMO.

Searched randomly on my phone at 5am for Banana Blossom UK fish’n’chips - and stayed because I was so intrigued, educated and entertained by the chef/cook/presenter. Love how she seemed to research so much, used both canned and fresh, was so knowledgeable, and just had such a damn natural delivery. You deserve 1m subs seriously…

Could you blanch the fresh one in salt water? And maybe use some dashi in the blanching liquid?
I used to watch you all the time good to see you again. I’ve been curious about this blossom fish. I ‘ve watched several others make it but they seem to skip over talking about the texture. I need to try this! Let us know if you figure out a way to get rid of the astringent taste in the fresh banana flower 🙂
I have no idea what banana blossom tastes like, but based on the texture, maybe treat the fresh ones like an artichoke (?) Like, maybe blanche it in some boiling water for a few minutes to get rid of some of the astringency. Or even leaving it soaking in lemon water for a few hours and changing the water a couple of times. I don't know, but I feel like it's a vegetable with a lot of room for improvement :)

In order to keep the banana blossoms from falling apart, Edgy Veg used rice paper to wrap the broken banana blossoms together. I tried her recipe and boy oh boy, it does taste like an extra fish skin!
I had this from a local food truck in SoCal (original herbivore) and it was BOMB 😩
I can’t tell you it tasted like fish or not bc I honestly never liked fish lol but it was good as it’s own thing

@@hotforfood they were canned....I don't remember the brand....but it wasn't that great to work with.
We cook with fresh. We use it for pan fry. With ginger, garlic, chilli, salt and a lot of Oil. You need fat to get rid of the bitterness. We also eat the core of Banan plant ( banana is a plant not a tree). Everything that comes out of a banana plant is useful in the kitchen ( not always edible tho). And your "fresh blossom" doesn't look fresh. The small flowers are suppose to be White and full of nectar. It looked black in the video. Which means it's been few days since it's been picked.

You are so clever in the kitchen, Lauren…you seemed to be very close to getting this right! I’ve wanted to try this recipe…and I’m glad you told us about that bad brand of banana blossoms, because that’s the one that my vegan grocery sells…now, I won’t have to waste my money.
If you make your own sparkling water with plain water in a soda stream- it’s not club soda. It’s just sparking water. Club soda has salt and or minerals added to it, giving it a distinct taste different from sparkling water.

Lauren, I live in a tiny community in NB, Canada and have a hard time getting stuff like the banana blossoms, so could you use hearts of palm? Will the hearts of palm soak up a marinate?
I would use artichokes instead..
Nice....... Maybe the fresh blossom needed more soaking in the liquid....... And thyme and garlic always help to give an extra fish taste..... I am going to make this whenever a blossom comes on our banana trees... Give Thanks!

You need to brine the fresh banana blossom for 4-5 days before eating it or else it's super bitter!

You need more seaweed. I made it for my vegan son and he was so amazed that it tasted like fish. I used seaweed sheets they taste like fish.

Lauren there are so many unhealthy things here I wouldn't even know where to start. The oil especially. You should never heat anything but unrefined coconut oil or flax oil. Why didn't you use tempura batter??
I think it's a lot of work for not a great product at the end!
